PAIGE
**
Once Ember disclosed her opinion, I couldn’t help but shut her off. We never came to a junction with decisions and wishes. We were always aligned with what we yearned for and for the first time that this was happening, I wanted to do nothing more than strangle that man of a mate because of whom we were contradicting.
My red-brown hair was left open in their natural waves. My gray-blue eyes were ready to battle. I had worn simple black flats and made my way towards the dining hall. I had a presumption that I would find those people right there.
As I made my way, Annabelle caught me up, right in the way. I ignored her presence and kept walking, holding my head high, like I usually did. But Annabelle next to me couldn’t stop her happy cackles and humming next to my ear. I paused and gave her a look.
“Yes, the left-behind Annoying Barbie of the Barbie World, tell me what is that you want?” I asked her, giving her the attention that she was craving, and satisfying her attitude at least once before I bid her goodbye and settled in the human town.
“Are you afraid that he’ll reject you and discard you?” She asked me and I didn’t feel like it was important for me to answer her oh-so-stupid question. “Or are you just too eager to make him notice you with that dress and become the Queen?” She tsked in my ear and I rolled my eyes taking in a deep breath.
I whirled towards her and flashed her a big smile. I just knew how to take her down. “Why not? Once I become the Queen, I can openly bully you. You need to be taught a lesson on how to treat other living beings, anyway.” I smirked and she couldn’t help but gasp at my suggestion. “Now, if you’d excuse me, I have a mate to attend to, unlike you,” I enunciated to her and walked ahead, purposefully bumping her shoulder in the process.
I only took two steps and there stood the Alpha King Whatever, darting his eyes over me. With the face he made, I could clearly make it out that he was studying me and also had heard my conversation with Annabelle. Not that I cared what people thought about me but I was hoping this would work to my benefit and he would reject me.
“Alpha King, I hope you came to learn what kind of person she is.” Annabelle purred in her pretentious victim voice. I couldn’t believe her stamina of lying straight through her teeth and with that added drama. “I hope you’ll make a wise decision for the betterment of our race.” She did a fake sniffle before bowing down to him and rushing away from us. I just sighed.
“We need to talk,” I told him, ignoring all the mess and look he was giving me. He nodded in response and turned to face the woman next to him. He said something to her and she nodded, giving him a bow and then vanishing in thin air.
“Guide me.” He said and I understood what he meant. I turned around and walked ahead towards the little lake we had here. It was not the most beautiful place but it did comfort me many times through my rough times. I didn’t want to take him to my special place but that was the only place where no one crowded or would eavesdrop on our conversation.
After walking for a few minutes, none of us broke a sweat. I paused and then gave him a look. I was waiting for him to say anything but he kept quiet.
“Why won’t you speak now?” I asked him, unable to wait for him to start.
“Weren’t you the one who instigated that we needed to talk? It’s only right that you initiate the first conversation, too.” He pointed out and I shut my eyes. He was somehow so on point with his words that I wanted to strangle him more.
“Okay, I’ll break it to you. I understand that we both are dissatisfied with the blessed mate and it’s only better for us to reject each other and move on with our lives.” I articulated without wasting any time or hitting around the bush.
Ember - “I won’t allow you to reject him, Paige.” Ember yelled in my brain but I wanted to just ignore her words. I couldn’t let her weakness towards our mate make us change the course of our lives.
Paige - “Let me handle this on my own.” I told her and shut her off. She kept prodding my brain but the wall I built in between us was too strong because of my strong will against everything that was going on now.
“Dissatisfied? Are you really?” He asked me and I knew he was mentioning it because of the earlier conversation he had witnessed between Annabelle and me. “I don’t think you have any privilege to be dissatisfied. You are mated to the Alpha King.” He prided himself in his position and I wanted to punch him.
“Does it look like I’m delighted about it?” I asked him, blandly. “I have no interest in pack life or living here. So, naturally, I don’t have an interest in the ranking system, either. And if I have no liberty to be dissatisfied, you don’t have one, too.” I spat on his face. I didn’t care what he was thinking about himself but I was not going to let him behave in that way again.
“Why don’t I have the liberty? I’m mated to an Omega.” I could hear the disgust in his tone and I wanted to punch him. “And why do you have to not be happy when all you are getting is upgrading? You’ll be a Luna from a mere Omega.” His tone disgusted me.
“Is that how you see Omegas? With so much disgust? I wonder how the Omegas in your pack survive.” I spat and he came forward holding my arm. I could see him trying to control his strength but still, I could feel a little hurt.
“Are you trying to cross all your boundaries or disrespect me because you are mated to me?” He asked me and I rolled my eyes at him.
“It’s more of a mutual treatment. You are allowed to look down on people but others can do the same to you. That’s not right, is it, Alpha?” I asked him, adding his title to show him the respect he demanded but not showing it.
“You are disrespecting me again.” He asserted a sharp glare in his eyes.
“Isn’t the title ‘Alpha’ a term of respect, Alpha?” I asked him and flashed him a big smile. Even the trees can sense the fakeness of my smile.
“Isn’t that mouth of yours acting too smart?” He questioned me, in a taunting manner and I just huffed.
“I already notified you that I'm very smart. On the other hand, smartness comes from my brain and not my mouth.” I responded to him and he just pulled me to him, stunning me for a moment. His touch really caused my brain to mess up a bit.
“I so want to reject you.” He gritted his teeth. I understood that he had something against me but what exactly, I didn't know.
“Why don’t you, then? I’ll give you this opportunity to proclaim to the world that you rejected me.” I suggested but my voice didn’t sound as strong as I was expecting it to.
“I don’t need such opportunities.” He declared and I only blinked at him, looking closely at his clean face. “And you won’t get such an opportunity either.” He stated.
“What does that mean?” I asked him and he shook his head.
“Before I elaborate to you what I mean, why don’t you tell me why you are so hell-bent on rejecting this mate bond?” He asked me and I had no response to his words. I didn’t want to tell him anything about me to earn pity, sympathy, and disgust. I was not going to allow him in to make me vulnerable.
“I don’t think I ought to tell you anything about that. All you have to know is that I don’t want to be in a pack and soon I'm going to flee to reside in human territory.” I told him, and he narrowed his eyes on me.
“So, you are ready to abandon your wolf like that?” He asked-stated. “I don’t know why an Alpha King would be mated to a person who has no interest in cultivating a pack.” He taunted me and I felt rage.
“Don’t you dare judge me based on a few seconds of my actions! Or maybe judge me, but if and only if you will reject me."I asserted. "I don’t want to waste my time cultivating a pack when the pack always is reckless with people who have a smaller rank. I don’t want to be in a place where ranks are everything for people!” It was the internal rage I had that blasted in front of him. He somehow pushed my buttons too well.
“You just got intriguing.” He announced as if I should be happy about it. “And now let me tell you what I mean. If you try to reject me, I’ll behead you. And I… will never reject you, Paige.” I only gulped down as he muttered my name from his mouth and the statement he made.
