Chapter One
PAIGE ** Alpha Rogers had announced that some people from the Royal White Night Pack would be visiting for their yearly inspection. That was a customary thing that occurred every year in April. This year, they still made an early arrival or it was usually after my birthday. On the same note, I just marked a huge cross on April 1. I just longed for my birthday to arrive and then I'd be able to choose my destiny. Just three more days to go. I loved my birthday since it had a date reading - 04/04. Also, this year was quite exceptional for me because my birthday marked a great opportunity for me. I would be granted my freedom. I wasn't fond of staying in the pack because no one ever treated me as a member. So, I was only counting years in the pack since I had known about one thing. The pack had one rule which would be my forever favourite. ~ A werewolf can settle in the human city after living twenty years in the pack. So, in that sense, I can move to the human land and start a new life just in two days when I'd be turning twenty. I couldn't be more excited so I would make sure that I depart and never turn back. I was already in discussion with Alpha Anthony about it and it appeared like he would give me a green signal on my yearning. My enmity towards other people was quite obvious that I didn't fit here. And they knew well enough about my work so they just didn't pester me except for one rebirth of 'Annoying Barbie' Annabelle. Everyone in the pack knew the two people who despised each other to the core were Annabelle and me. It wasn't like I only loathed her in the pack but she ranked on number one. I didn't want to wreck my mood because of her so I just kept quiet and decided to go and do my cleaning duties. I checked myself in the mirror once to find my wavy red hair tied in a fishtail braid and my greyish-blue eyes had already gotten the pre-birthday excitement filled in them. I had the black leggings with a simple blue old tee for today's cleaning. I didn't want to wear the usual maid's uniform and end up flashing people while I cleaned hightops. I was a good 5'5" yet there were tall shelves for which I needed to get on a ladder to clean. I proceeded out of the maid quarters and sauntered straight to the supply room. I went inside to gather up a broom, mop and bucket to start my cleaning for the day. When I stepped inside, I found all the needed items right by the corner. I also grabbed up a bottle of cleaning solution so I could be more effective and lastly, picked up a cloth. I was about to carry all the items out when the door of the supply room was banged shut. Even the deaf could hear, it was that loud and purposeful. I just sighed. "Really, Annabelle? You want to snoop into supply rooms now?" I asked, not even fazed by her childish actions. "Peeking into men's bathrooms is not enough for you, I guess," I commented, ready to go on a battle with her. "Oh, please!" She snorted like a pig and then scoffed. "At least they have something worth seeing." She retorted. I loved it the more challenging it got. "Do you think they feel the same about you?" I laughed, mockingly. I didn't want to mock her in these terms but she had turned to this channel of insults. I had to go along. "You! I know how attractive I am. I don't need you to validate the facts here." She yelled, almost losing her calm. I didn't have to do a lot to win and that's why I lost interest in battling with her. Sometimes she was a good battle. "To be clear, I don't wish to waste my time on such meaningless tasks," I said to her and I could feel her fuming on the other side even though I couldn't see her. "Then waste your time staying inside and not being able to complete your cleaning task!" She yelled and then strutted away clicking her heels, probably smirking. I only darted at the door, which could be unlocked from the inside and wondered why she even thought she won this fight. I pulled the door open, systematically carrying all the things and glanced at the direction Annabelle must've gone towards. I shook my head and focused on getting the cleaning done as soon as possible. – Today was the day of the arrival of the people and Alpha Rogers informed us that the Alpha King would make his way down to the inspection and he wanted things to be perfect. Unlike how I imagined my day to be spent in the maid quarters, probably watching some human dramas or reading books, I was standing in the kitchen. I was annoyed as it was because I was made to be a replacement. I, Paige Riley Roman, was going to have to fulfil the role as a replacement. I already did my duties, as I was on the cleaning task and now, I even had to take up on being the server. I couldn't start to despise the situation more than I already did. I knew this entire ploy was played by Annabelle and her mini-brained minions. I should've known, the moment she purposefully picked out the server duties with her minions, that she had a trap set for me. And how she executed it was by falling sick… fakester. And her sidekicks were ready to tag along so they left a three-people job to me, all alone. Keeping all the anger aside, I would do everything that was required and just vanish soon. I was excited for my birthday in two days and that kept up my spirits. With that motive, I had commenced my task. I filled up the tray with cutlery and held plates in another hand. Four sets were to be set so I made sure that I checked the count of items. I set the table with cutlery and went back to the kitchen. I had to do quite a few trips to ensure that all the items were settled on the table. Lastly, I was to take beetroot juice. I quickly poured the prepared juice into glasses and put them on the tray. This would be the last time I had to walk to the table. With a straight face, I was carrying the tray with me. I just wanted to finish setting the table so I could vanish from the scene before I had to meet and smile at Alpha King Whoever. I didn't want to indulge in the fake formalities and at the same time, despised having to smile more than I needed to. By the table stood my favourite person in the entire pack or more like the world. Annabelle. She was as haunting as the doll named after her name suggested. "How lovely to see the red hair adding colour to the environment with that red juice!" She plastered a huge fake smile showing her extraordinarily white pearly teeth. The shine of it was blinding me, not in a good way. "How lovely to see your blinding smile adding light to the environment with those pearl fake-white teeth!" I retorted similarly and she narrowed her eyes at me, losing the fake smile and exhibiting her real nature. "I would see if you can smile like me," She said and took a step closer to me. "Now," She whispered and then I felt a push. I was not expecting that and ended up tossing the tray of beetroot juice, tumbling back. I gasped and tried to brace myself for the fall but it never came in the way I expected it to. I was held by someone and my body was lit on fire at the contact. I felt electricity pass throughout my body creating a buzz-like feeling and I looked up to a mop of striking blue eyes and neatly settled brown hair. It felt like slow motion but my heart was beating double the speed. I had no idea what repercussions they were for. The next moment passed very fast. The four glasses fell, breaking into pieces and the juice was all splattered on me and the clean face of the handsome man now covered in beetroot juice just like me. But we both didn't care about the juice that splattered all over the place or the broken glass, it was about the tingles in the body. "You can't be my mate!" He yelled first, breaking the moment. It didn't take me a moment to hate him for his tone. I won't let anyone degrade me. Not even my mate. "And you can't be my mate!" I yelled back, standing on my feet. An electric glare went between us and nobody was ready to back down.
