Fei was hearing a non-stop ringing nearby. She squinted her eyes and moved to get up.
"Oh, it hurts like hell!" Fei groaned aloud. Her hand cupped her forehead. It felt like splitting open! She closed her eyes again and buried her head to the soft pillow.
"Hangover?" asked a masculine voice.
"Uh... I don't know..." Her brows knitted in a frown. The only man in the house was Uncle Doc. The voice was deep...
Her headache forgotten, Fei opened her eyes widely. She saw Blake standing by a table while pouring water in a crystal tumbler.
"Water. Good for the hangover." Blake carried the glass on water to Fei. "Drink."
Fei started to sit up. The silk sheet slithered down to her lap.
"Oh!" She laid down again speedily. She was naked! Her accusing eyes went straight to Blake. "Why are you here?"
"This is my home." Blake shrugged before he put down the tumbler on the side table. "Do you remember last night?"
"Last night?" Fei repeated suspiciously.
"You fainted. I carried you in here. And made you sip brandy." Blake sat down in the armchair. His long legs outstretched and his slender fingers laid on the cushion. He seemed relaxed but his eyes remained watchful.
Fei swallowed to ease the dryness of her throat. "I don't remember," she croaked. She eased the sheet around her naked shoulder and reached out for the glass carefully.
Silence reigned as she sipped water slowly. Suddenly, she saw a flashback of her sipping on a glass. The liquid was like fire, burning her mouth and throat.
Fei coughed aloud. "You gave me brandy last night!" she said accusingly.
Blake inclined his head. "I want to make sure that you are well."
"And if I was not well?"
"We will divorce immediately."
"Just like that!" Fei clicked her fingers mockingly.
Blake's glance was derisive. "A doctor came to examine your intoxicated self. He said you're just suffering to so much stress. Long periods of rest and nutritious foods will be good for you."
Her mouth was left hanging open when he finished talking.
"Close your mouth. You might catch a fly," he smiled lopsidedly.
Fei's lips were zipped close. She could not breath properly. Blake's craggy face had been so handsome when he almost smiled!
"T-thank you." It was the first time when someone had shown concern to her. Calling a doctor and all that...
'Blake Walker just wanted to make sure that you're healthy enough to give blood!' A small voice screamed inside her mind.
His expression went blank at once. Blake stood up and strode to the door.
"Long rest for you today. Doctor's order," he turned and told her abruptly. His eyes not looking straight at her.
Fei could not speak. She watched the silent closing of the door. She noted the elaborate carvings on it absently.
After a moment, she gave a forced shrug.
'The encounters last night and this morning were just one-time incidents! Blake said we will live separately! Our public appearances are very limited! Only once in a blue moon!'
While giving herself a firm sermon, Fei stood up gingerly.
She was startled to see a woman on the long mirror inside the large bathroom.
'Am I this woman?' Her hand touched the smooth surface of the mirror.
Her eyes were bruised from lack of sleep. Her cheeks were hollow due to limited food. She was able to gobble up a mug of oats every morning. No lunch and dinner. When she got home, she just drank a glass of milk and then, bed.
'Over-fatigue gave her parched skin and dry hair!' Fei wailed privately.
Her eyes searched the wide counter right in front of the mirror. There were jars of beauty and skin products.
"Collagen!" Fei slapped a dollop of the cream on her face and neck. She massaged the lotion on her skin lightly.
She picked up the hair conditioner bottle and proceeded to wet her short hair. She applied a generous amount of the concoction around her head before wrapping a towel.
When she gazed again at the mirror, her skin looked softer.
Satisfied, Fei unhook the clean and new robe. She was tightening the cords when the incessant ringing started again.
"That's my cellphone!" she exclaimed. Searching around for the duffle bag, she saw it sitting at the foot of the bed.
Her mother was calling via the internet.
"Hello, Fei! I can't contact you since last night!"
"I'm sorry, Ma. I'm busy... um... have you received the..." Fei felt guilty. She did not know how to tell her mother that she got married!
"Thank you for the money, Fei! We are much, much grateful! Your Pa and I! His operation is scheduled next week! Thank you very much! Thank you for being a good daughter!" Her mother was crying while smiling.
"Oh, Ma!" Fei swallowed her next words. She would wait for the right time. "Tell Pa to get well soon. Don't worry, Ma. Hope Dan is okay. I love you all!"
"We love you, Fei!"
When the video call ended, the cellphone rang again. It was Gellie.
"Hello, Gellie!" Fei widened her eyes and gave a big smile. She tried to sound cheerful.
"Hello, Fei!" Her friend was ready to sob once again. Her puffy eyes suggested a sleepless night. "How are you?"
"I'm fine. You don't worry much," she said with concern.
"Oh! I thought..." Gellie wailed again. "I thought that--that stranger..."
"Gellie!" Fei pronounced her friend's name firmly. It was a mute reprimand. "I slept the whole night!"
"Oh..." Gellie sounded like a deflated balloon. "Will you come to the hospital today?"
'Long rest for you today. Doctor's order.'
"Um, I was told to rest today. Doctor's order." Fei almost stuttered when she repeated Blake's words.
"Uncle Doc mentioned about you resigning...?" Gellie continued hesitantly.
"No, of course not!" Fei was quick to deny. "I will file for a one week leave tomorrow. Leave only," she repeated firmly.
"Okay. I'll see you tomorrow. Um, you'll take your things, too?"
"Yes, Gellie..." The weight of her whole new situation started to get heavier. "Uh, I guess... you will take in a new roommate!" Fei tried to sound cheerful.
"Yes... I will put a sign outside the door here..." Gellie was ready to sob again.
"Don't worry much, Gellie! You are my forever bestfriend!" Fei said coaxingly.
"I know that!" Gellie sniffled aloud. "I just... just miss you!" She gave her a flying kiss.
"Oh, Gellie! You're such a cry baby!" Fei gave her closest friend a flying kiss, too. "Bye, Gellie! Stop crying now! Everything's alright!"
"Yes, Fei! I won't cry anymore!" Gellie affirmed with tears in her eyes while she pressed the 'close' button.
'Everything's alright...!'
Fei said those words without knowing what was to be expected of her!
