Chapter - 1
"We will be married tomorrow morning at nine o'clock sharp!" Blake announced tersely.
Fei did not have a reaction. She was dumbfounded.
"Then, we shall go to my lawyer's office," he continued flatly.
Still, no reaction.
Fei had been seating on the iron chair for five minutes. Or more. She did not glance on the wall clock because her eyes had been staring at the back of the man.
Blake Walker had wide shoulders and narrow hips. His tall and long-limbed figure was sheathed in casual shirt and faded jeans. His feet wore black loafers. When he tapped his right foot abruptly, no sound was created.
Yet, Fei had seen it and waited for him to face her. She straightened her back tensely.
Fei did not know what she felt whenever she looked at his face. Fascination? Attraction?
'And those eyes... So sad...'
"Well? No comment?"
'Had he really spoken?' Fei asked herself. 'To me?' She found her head turning left and right. Nobody was present in the room but Blake Walker and her.
"Yes. You and I shall be married tomorrow." Blake repeated his words unhurriedly.
"Who do you marry tomorrow?" Fei bristled when she was spoken to like someone with slow wit.
"You." Blake folded his muscular arms and looked at her pointedly.
"I have a name," Fei gritted between her teeth.
"Aah!" Blake nodded his head. "What's your name again? Fei. Fei Santos..."
"I don't have time to listen to such nonsense!" Fei stood up and walked briskly to the door.
They were inside the office of Dr. Fred Prado. Privately, he was 'Uncle Doc' to Fei and Gellie. Her bestfriend was the niece of the doctor.
"Mr. Blake Walker wants to talk to you, Fei." Uncle Doc was soft-spoken. She always strained to hear his words clearly.
"Again?" Fei said in a low tone. "I already refused his offer!"
Blake Walker proposed to buy the blood she regularly donated to the hospital with a very tempting amount of twenty thousand dollars!
"Oh, he did not mention that, Fei. It is another matter, I think." He gave her a lop-sided smile before going to his usual morning rounds.
Uncle Doc had a boyish side lurking behind the bespectacled professional of senior age. He was a romantic at heart.
"You marry and be merry!" He often teased his niece and Fei to find a boyfriend. "Life in a hospital is turbulent. It will suck you. It will make you forget the world outside."
Both Fei and Gellie would only giggle and replied in unison. "We're still young, Uncle Doc!"
Fei snapped back her wandering thoughts. Her hand was holding the door knob when Blake spoke again.
"Our marriage is just a two-year contract. I will double your salary here," Blake murmured evenly.
Her fingers tightened on the knob. She could not turn it because she recalled her mother's call.
"Fei, your father had a heart attack this evening! We were having dinner when he fainted!" Isay Santos sobbed as she spoke. "We got him to the hospital just in time! The doctors wanted to operate on your father!"
"I will send you money right away, Ma! Don't cry so much! Where's Dan?" Fei asked about her younger brother, Sheridan.
"Dan's here with me. He's sleeping beside your father," Isay Santos sniffled loudly. "Oh, Fei! I thought I will be left alone with Dan! Your dear father--hu hu!"
Fei sent all her savings to her mother's bank account yesterday.
'Ma, take care of Pa. Please tell me the amount needed for the operation. I will send more. Don't call. Just chat with me. Don't worry, Ma! I love you!' Fei messaged her mother.
'Thank you very much, Fei! I'll ask the doctors!' We love you!' was the reply of Isay Santos. She seemed more cheerful than their first conversation.
'How can I forget my problem?' Fei sighed silently. Unknowingly, her shoulders drooped.
She could get the money needed for her father's operation from a loan shark. And then, she would pay the money with high interest...
'I will double your salary here...'
Fei bit her lip. 'Sooo tempting...!'
But what did stop her? Blake Walker just announced his intentions without knowing her name!
'Pride!' Fei spat disgustedly. She took a deep breath before she turned slowly. Her eyes were wide when they searched his face.
Blake had his usual calm demeanor. Only his deep-seated eyes mirrored what he was really feeling. They were jet-black and restless.
Fei forced her tongue to move. Her fingers uncurled around the cold knob reluctantly. Her back laid flat on the door to get support because her knees trembled suddenly.
She swallowed hard before speaking huskily. "Are you serious?"
"Yes," Blake hissed a driven reply.
Fei realized that Blake was as unwilling to marry her as she was!
"Okay. I accept your ten thousand dollars in exchange for my blood--"
"No!" Blake shook his head. His fingers combed his clean-cut hair. "We must marry each other!"
"But I don't want to marry!"
"Why? Is there a man you want to marry?"
"That's none of your business!" There was no one attracted to her--but why admit that to Blake? Fei was fully aware of her own lack of appeal to men!
Blake walked over to where she was standing without moving. She felt the full force of his stormy gaze.
"We will sign a prenuptial agreement. You will receive one million dollars at the end of two years. Aside from that, you will receive a salary as a nurse--double!" Blake stated between clenched teeth.
Fei closed her eyes. She wanted to escape but Blake was right in front of her. She saw his fists before she banished him from sight.
"Our marriage will be on paper only!" he whispered against her ear.
Fei winced when his hot breath scalded her delicate skin. She swallowed her frustrated moan.
"We will be a normal couple in public but we will have separate lives in private!" he muttered gruffly.
Fei concealed her pain from the hurtful words. "Will it be an open marriage?"
Blake's brows knitted frowningly. "Open?"
"Just like you will have a side chick and while I..." Fei's voice faded awkwardly.
