Fei went back to the bathroom. She finished washing her hair. The strands were satisfyingly soft and shiny. Afterwards, she soaked her whole body in the luxurious bath.
She remembered Gellie while relaxing in the bubbles.
'You are stressed, girl! I know it! Look! You are wearing different slippers! You are always forgetful when you're stressed!'
'Yes! I was stressed for the past few years!' Fei admitted silently. 'Ever since I worked here... I didn't want to leave my family behind. I was worried but I hid it inside...'
She brought her deep thoughts to the bedroom. She rummaged into her duffle bag, pulling out the pants and blouse.
Fei stopped when she saw the pink and flowery summer dress. It was laid out on the bed, waiting for her to see its potential.
She glanced down on her pants and blouse. They were old and boring.
She made up her mind. Her fingers felt the softness of silk when she plucked the dress. A secret excitement ran through her when she gazed back at herself on the mirror.
Fei had felt new. She seemed reborn into a woman with beauty and surrounding splendor.
'Beauty and splendor! My foot!' That small voice mocked once again. 'Fei Santos, you've done nothing yet! Work for the money! There is nothing free in this world!'
The sharp words had snapped Fei from her daydreaming. She ran a brush to her short hair and dusted a bit of powder on her shiny nose before straightening her shoulders.
"What's first? Introduce herself to the patient!" Fei told herself aloud. "I hope I can find her here!"
From the bits of information from Uncle Doc's murmurings, the patient was Thea Montes. She was just ten years old. A tragic accident caused the third degree burns on the face and legs of the youngster.
Fei's heart softened because Thea Montes was still a child to suffer such injuries.
She had never seen the patient though their blood were examined and found to be a perfect match.
When she opened the bedroom door, an immaculate hallway had greeted her. The structure was tall though narrow. She was on a loft-style house because she could see the high windows from below.
Fei followed the gleaming rails. She paused at the top of the stairs. She was surprised to see her bare feet.
'See? You're stressed! You don't wear any shoes!' Fei guessed what Gellie would say to her. A fond smile curved her lips.
The wooden floor was clean and polished. It was also warm. She did not mind walking with no shoes.
She passed a door. She knocked very lightly before she pushed open. It was another bedroom.
'Nobody in here...'
Fei reached the first floor. There were armchairs in the living room. The kitchen and the dining area could be seen from here.
She liked the house. Compact and neat. She touched everything as she moved. There were watercolor paintings on the wall that Fei liked.
"Do you like what you see?" Blake spoke from the open front door. He just arrived and came inside soundlessly.
He was wearing a no-nonsense black business suit. It matched his somber look.
"You startle me," Fei complained breathlessly. "Um, your house is impressive..."
Blake closed the door carefully. "Not mine. This is yours," he replied casually.
"This... this is the apartment?" Wide-eyed, Fei looked again everywhere. "But this is very expensive!"
"I can afford it." Blake sounded bored. "Anything you don't like, just say. The interior company will change them."
So, everything was new! Fei was speechless.
"I brought food." Blake carried a big brown bag to the kitchen. "Let's eat while I discuss something important with you."
Upon hearing this, Fei walked swiftly to the kitchen. She opened a large cupboard.
"It's a refrigerator!" She was surprised. There were rows of bottled milk, juices, and water.
"You must buy the solid food. Here is your card." Blake pulled out a black plastic card from his breast pocket. "Use it on anything you need."
Blake was giving her pocket money, in other words.
"I can buy my needs. Thank you," Fei said primly. She did not accept the card.
Blake placed the card at the center of the dining table carelessly. "Just in case you need it," he muttered carelessly.
'I won't need it!' Fei swallowed her embarrassment. She turned to get two bottles of water wordlessly. She went to the other side of the kitchen and watched Blake.
The man moved precisely. Each time his hand went inside the bag, his fingers were holding a package. He placed it to two places on the table.
"Come and sit. Hope you like fried chicken and burger."
Fei inched to the high-backed chair and sat down gingerly. She whispered 'thank you' to Blake. She ate very little. She was very conscious of him.
"Um, I will file a one week leave tomorrow..." She broke the reigning silence.
"You have already resigned as of today," Blake informed her matter-of-factly. "I am your new employer, remember?"
Fei opened her mouth but no words came out so she closed it again. Her mind raced around to think of something to say.
"I will get my things--"
"You don't need them," he cut in.
Her hackles went up. "What did you do to my things? Burn them?"
"They are put in a storage for two years."
"You don't have the right! Those are mine!" Fei stared at him defiantly.
"All that women will probably need are at your disposal. You can use them or dispose them," he reasoned in a bored tone.
"Because you can afford them!" She gnashed her teeth. She controlled her fury. "I'd like to meet the patient. Where is she?"
His expression clouded momentarily. He did not expect her sudden change of mood. He gazed at her calm demeanor.
"You shall meet her tomorrow. A car will be here for you in the morning. Is nine o'clock too early for you?"
Fei smirked privately. "I will prefer seven o'clock," she declared self-assuredly.
"Okay." Blake stood up. Fei noted that he did not open any of his food. "I'll be going. Don't lock the door behind me. It will lock by itself automatically."
"Er, Mr. Walker?" Fei called out when he was at the front door. He turned to pierce her with his eyes.
"Yes?"
"What is the address of this--this apartment?" Fei almost forgot her question.
Blake answered without emotion. "Any question?"
"No. None. Goodbye!" She shook her head abruptly,
"Goodnight," he corrected her. "You look refreshed."
"Oh." Her hand went up to her chest when her heartbeat felt like a drum.
Before Fei could say something, Blake was out of the house.
