Chapter five

(Elena)

“Mommy” Kiana squeals, throwing herself at me. I chuckled catching her, but what I didn’t expect was for Kaiden to do the same, knocking us three on the ground and making us all laugh.

“Hi babies. How was school?” I asked, picking them up and making sure they weren’t hurt.

“It was good mommy. We went to the playground”, Kaiden says.

“And I drew a picture for you” Kiana says, handing me a picture from her backpack. It was a picture of me with a puppy and a small dragon. There was what looked like to be another dog but this one was bigger… way bigger and some type of massive dragon flying above us which reminded me of my tattoo.

“Baby, who are they?” I asked, pointing at the dog and the dragon.

“I don’t know, but I always dream of them. They make me feel safe” she says, running her little fingers over the drawing. Kaiden looks at the picture and does the same.

“Mommy, can we get a dog? Like this one?” Kaiden asked, pointing to the bigger dog.

“In time baby. For us to get a dog means we have to get a bigger place”, I tell him.

“Okay” they both say in unison.

“Alright, let’s go home. Mommy had a long day today” I said, opening the back door for them to get in. Once they had their seatbelts on, I got in the car and headed home.

“Mommy, how is Tristan?” Kiana asks. They knew about Tristan because I told them about him. They could feel last night I was a little stressed, and they didn’t like it. So, I told them about Tristan and how I was waiting to see how his mommy was.

“I don’t know baby, but as soon as I find out I will let you both know” I replied. They’ve been wanting to see him since last night. Hopefully, after his mom gets better, Tristan and my kids can play together.

“Is Elena coming too?” Tristan asked. He had become attached to Elena, and I have a feeling she had become attached to him too.

“She won’t be joining us. She has to work”, I told him and looked in the rearview mirror at him. We had brought his mom to the kingdom yesterday and the doctors have been trying to figure out what’s wrong with her. Tristan asked if he could spend the night at our house, but I knew it was because he wanted to bake with my mate and for Elena to have some. This time, instead of baking, they made breakfast for Elena since she was going to work from four in the morning until three in the afternoon. She’s going to be patrolling near the school with another officer. She was doing a double shift today. I made sure to tell Elena that Tristan had made breakfast for her. We arrived at the Royal Pack, and I felt Tristan tense behind me as he looked around.

“Everything is fine Tristan. You saw for yourself that everyone here is nice. The King won’t let anything happen to you”, I assured him. I got out of the car and opened the door for him. Just as he got out, King Aiden came out with a big smile on his face.

“Hi Tristan, how are you?” the king asked.

“I’m good, your majesty. How are you?” Tristan asked, bowing his head in respect.

“Better now that you are here” the king replied, making Tristan look at him in confusion.

“See, I have this video game and I have been trying to pass a level where I have been stuck since yesterday and I was wondering if you could help”. I bit the inside of my cheek trying to hold back my laughter. Sometimes the king can be a big kid himself. He loves kids. He and his mate Killian will be great fathers one day.

“Sure, I would love to help” Tristan said with a big smile. We walked inside the castle where we saw Killian walking in the recreation room with some snacks.

“Hi alpha Killian”, Tristan says in a happy voice.

“Hi Tristan, you came just in time”, Killian smiles. The King gestured for me to follow him and I did so. Once inside his office, he turned to me, and I saw the pain in his eyes, and I knew this was bad.

“His mother was rejected by her mate. We have been trying everything, but we don’t think she’s going to make it pass the night” the king says, and my heart breaks for Tristan. He is such a good boy. The king places a hand on my shoulder and hands me a tissue. That’s when I realized I had tears streaming down my face.

“He can stay here in the pack with us. He will be safe and will also be in school. I will personally make sure he has everything he needs”, he says. He opens his mouth to say something but closes it when his eyes glaze over. Suddenly, I heard a scream and I ran out of the office to see Tristan holding his chest and tears streaming down his face. The king and Killian rush to Tristan’s side, holding him and cradling him.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry” was all that I heard the king say before I walked out the room, giving them some time. About an hour later, the king comes out with his mate holding a sleeping, Tristan.

“I’ll put him up in our room for now”, Killian says, walking away from us.

“So, she’s…” I trailed off and the king nodded, knowing what I wanted to ask. I opened my mouth to ask a question when my phone rang, and I saw the king’s eyes glaze over again.

“Chief Markus here” I answered.

“Chief, rogues are attacking the elementary school” officer Ann says.

“Where’s Detective Morales?” I asked. Officer Ann and Elena were patrolling together. s**t Elena doesn’t know anything about the supernatural. She’s human for goddess's sake. That’s when I hear a growl and the phone goes dead.

“Your highness” I called.

“I know, let’s head out” the king says, and I quickly shift into my grey wolf and head out. I pray that everyone is okay.
