Chapter 14

Dinner with Gran: elbows off the table, sit up straight, chew with your mouth shut, take small bites, make pleasant conversation, don't talk with your mouth full, finish your plates, use your napkin, ask permission to leave the table, help clear the table, sweep the floor, help wash the dishes. That was Nathaniel’s memory of having dinner at his home in childhood when his father and grandmother were at home except his mother and him. They always said that dinner was an affair which could show your class at the society and it was something that you could use to make or break your long-standing position or elevate it even further. Now what it was going to men to him tonight, of that he had no clue at all. He had already put a bone of contention in the morning because of his stupidity. Cadence and Nathaniel were of the close build so they always shared clothes of each other. Chris was rather bulkier than them, and no exercise could tone him. It made him more ribbed definitely but did not reduce his bulk. The trainers were baffled but that made their jokes with Chris even more hilarious. Standing inside his closet, Nat remembered him again and smiled. And he became sad again. “Hey Nat!! Did you decide which shirt you are wearing? I mean, it is a formal thing right?” asked Cadence as he came inside the closet and then looked at his friend and paused for a bit. “Are you fine Bro?” he asked. Nat nodded at him and then sighed,” Almost everything that happens around me now Cad, it reminds me of Chris. I don’t know when this feeling is going to go but I miss him desperately.” “I miss him too Nat. He was our mate and he was our best friend, how can you expect not to miss him at all?” asked Cad with a soft understanding smile and then added,” That i***t must be up there looking at us and laughing that see, I am not here but still I am here with you.” “That is for sure,” said Nat as he looked at the shirts in his collection. They were all branded and they had been stocked by his mother when he had given her his credit card and she had told that he would never have to worry about his clothes again. It had been six years, and a lot of these clothes were still untouched. “Man!!! Do you even know what your closet is filled with?” asked Cadence in an awed voice. “Yeah!! Clothes..what kind of stupid question is that?” asked Nathaniel as he pulled out a light blue coloured shirt. It still had the tag on and he showed it to Cadence. “How does this look?” asked Nat and Cad said,” Man that is a beautiful colour. Now if you are wearing blue, what should I wear?” “Wear anything except black. You know how my father is about that colour right?” asked Nat and Cadence nodded. They already had faced this once before and he winced at the words that he had to listen from the Retd. Admiral that day. “Man I am telling, I mean, I should not be telling you, if anything at all but your father is a piece of work. You know that right?” asked Cadence and Nathaniel let out a short bark of laughter. “Oh boy!! Trust me Cad, no one knows that better than me. If there is anyone who has faced it first hand from childhood then it is me. I have sincere doubts that he is actually a psychopath who is in a line only because he was in the Navy,” said Nat as he put on the shirt and buttoned it up. “You are in a terrific fiery mood today, I get that. But for heaven’s sake, I am hungry and I want to have some real good food. So until dinner is done please remember to keep your mouth shut,” said Cadence as he found a light-cream coloured shirt and put it on. It had pearly white buttons and looked even more regal. “Great…so now food is more vital than your friend, awesome…could not have asked for a better friend,” said Nathaniel as he grinned at Cadence. “Look we both know that the food that is cooked in your house by the chef is awesome and to be not a part of that would be literally heart breaking. But honestly, if you ask what I think, you should have declined the invitation for the both of us. I mean, you already had the chance to go out with that beach Siren right? And I would have gone to drink at the bar, drowning in sorrows. So it would have been a lot more fruitful than what we are originally going to spend tonight,” said Cadence as he put on the jacket and then looked at the mirror. “Now that we are all ready to go, I am feeling that would have been the better choice. But there are some things that you cannot run away from Cad. You know that better than me. Just like the funeral, we knew that it was a part of our duty, and we were doing that for our friend who martyred for his country. This is also going to be the same. No difference at all,” said Nat as he opened another drawer and pulled out a tie for selection which would suit his shirt. “Yeah!! Let’s get it over with then. So what is the mission plan for tonight?” asked Cadence as he went ahead and found a set of pearl cufflinks from another drawer. “Well nothing more than monologues. No opinions at all. Whatever asked we are going to be the perfect soldiers. Do not think that we are going for a family dinner at one time as well. Only think that we are going to the enemy lines and there are high chances that we might be poisoned or executed until and unless we tread with care. Is that clear soldier?” asked Nat in his gruff voice and immediately Cadence went to attention position.
