Chapter Four

“You may sit in the chair, Ms. Darlington. Standing there won't help you save your career.” Damien's voice was much colder than she remembered last night. For a moment she felt like backing away and just ran away from him. Her whole body was shaking. “I hate to repeat myself, Ms. Darlington." He spoke once more. This time Eve regained her senses and hesitantly settled into the chair that was on the opposite side of his direction. “Y-yes, Mr. Heather. Excuse me.” She made her voice clear. But she couldn't look into his eyes because she was afraid that she couldn't take his intimidating looks. Moreover, there was another reason. She was scared. Because the man she had been avoiding was now in front of her. He sits comfortably and looks perfectly handsome. How could Eve forget those Emerald eyes of his? That was the reason he had lured her that night. She was so mesmerized by the way they sparkled in the club lights at night. And she has made a mistake that has come to haunt her now. “I assumed it was the hangover that made you unable to answer my question, Ms. Darlington. However, my time was running out. This conversation now-” “I'm sorry Mr. Heather. P-please give me another chance. I shouldn't give up on you.” Eva muttered feverishly as she realized how long she had lost focus. But the man in front of her seemed to have lost interest. His expression had already darkened. "Do you consider this an unnecessary meeting, Ms. Darlington? If you mind how you slept at my place last night, you should forget it. I'm not here to talk about how shameful you are.” Damien's words pierced her heart like a blade. She didn't understand herself with her sudden reaction. But it was clear to her that she was completely offended. "You. You could have kicked me out of your house last night, but you insulted me about how shameful I am… you had no right to—" “I have a right to do so, Ms. Darlington. You should thank me for letting you in. I remember how you were afraid of people discovering you when you were drunk. Did you forget?" he smirked. Only Eve knows how much she wiped it off. She knew it was her fault, but insulting her about how dirty she was for sleeping in the wrong room was too much. Even the most perfect one can make mistakes. There is no exception to this. “You know what, I won't negotiate with people like you. Let's stop this nonsense.” She stood up frantically. Eve's chest heaved up and down as she fixed her gaze on him. Damien, however, looked calm and unruffled. He watched her expression settle and enjoyed it. “Very well, I also don't think you qualify to be the face of the SCG. Especially when you are just sleeping-” “You imbecile! How dare you! What do you think about yourself? A perfect person? You have no right to judge me based on a single mistake!" her voice boomed. If she had been somewhat calm before, she was now a tiger who wanted to eat Damien alive. But even though she was angry, the man in front of her just stared at her calmly. Eve took the first step and began walking away from his desk. "Do you think you could easily get out the door by wasting my time with your nonsense, Miss Darlington?" She was halfway through when Damien spoke. This time he was completely frigid. His voice gave her goosebumps, so she stopped walking. She turned around and regretted it afterwards. He was already behind her and walking forward while her legs stayed away from him. "Stop this nonsense, Mr. Heather! We're both wasting our time here! Don't blame me for everything!” Her whole system was confused. At that moment, her eyes widened as she reached the end of the door. She couldn't move anymore. Her body was stuck as he walked towards her. "What I hated most was wasting time… do you know how precious it is to me, woman?" His eyes were empty. Eve realized how doomed she was. She was nothing more than a frightened cat, facing the predator before her. Damien was so close she lost the confidence to breathe. “S-stay away from me…” she whimpered. Her hands were shaking as she covered her body. "You don't want anyone to know how you slept at my place last night, do you, Ms. Darlington?" He whispered right in her ear. This time Eve swallowed countless times. She can't find the words to speak. She fell silent ironically. “What do you want… jerk." Her words came after she fought with herself about whether to speak or stay silent. Damien's lips lifted secretly. However, he remained still as he listened to Eve's furious breathing. Her electric blue eyes flickered with mixed emotions as she glared at him. "Good girl. I always thought you were so stubborn," he chuckled lightly. “Jerk, get to the point," Eva growled. She was dying to get out of his sight. Because the closer she got to him, the more fearful she became. "Be my girlfriend, just-" "Are you crazy?! What's your problem?" she mumbled aggressively. Her head was now wondering what was wrong with him. "If you don't let me finish, everyone will know how good you are in bed-" "You!" “I just discovered how conservative you are, Miss Darlington. That's old style, but impressive.” Damien tucked back some of her loose hair. His patience was wearing thin, though. He was spending his precious time with her, but nothing was over. He wasn't the type to let it go easily. Maybe it would be better too, if he got something that would help him. “I'm not really interested in you, if that's what you assumed. It was just a simple task. You know, my grandmother wanted me to get married. But I couldn't fulfill her wish, so I will hire you as my girlfriend. By deed, not reality.” He began, this time distancing himself from Eve to let her breathe. They both settled down, calmer than before. "What if I refuse?" she asked bluntly. Even though she already knew what would happen if she didn't want to work with him. “You know what's next, Miss Darlington. Ticktock, time is ticking". Her feet instinctively stomped on the floor. How could she be with him when he was the person she was trying to avoid? Was it karma?' she asked herself. Eve had to choose for the sake of her career and her daughter. "But he won't find out, will he? No, I should stay away from him.'' Nervousness began to creep into her system; she couldn't decide which to choose. They were both too heavy for her; she needed to balance them. “You are stubborn, woman. So enjoy tonight's news.” Damien lost his patience. He won't wait for her to decide, there are plenty of women he could employ. He burst through the door, leaving Eve still stunned in her position. His fist was clenched as he walked down the path. It was the first time anyone had rejected him and it was a slap in the face to his pride. "I agree!" He stopped and turned in the other direction after Eve's voice crept through the place. His clouded expression slowly brightened. He then looked over at her only to witness her eyebrows rise. “Good choice, Darlington." He muttered casually. However, deep down he was glad that she had come forward. Damien didn't know why; he believed it was helping him at his grandmother's request. “But you have to forget that nothing happened last night, you should keep your word." Eve wasn't sure if she had made the right decision. She thought only of her daughter Yssa. “Very well, get ready to meet her tonight. I will send someone to fetch you,” He then walked away from her. He was fast. She didn't notice him moving away. "What? How am I supposed to attend a social gathering tonight?" She stomped her foot again.
