Chapter Seven

1050 Words
The dinner went smoothly without a fault, but Eve's body went completely numb. She couldn't discern how she managed to get into the car as her mind wandered. She felt like she was flying through the air without feeling anything. She had no rushes or trouble breathing. The color of her skin didn't change, except that she was completely numb to the point where she felt like being drunk, but she wasn't. Another thing she hated about her allergic reaction was not being able to lie about everything. "Are you good?" Damien's voice rang deep in her ears. Eve could rarely move her lips to smile to reassure him. In the back of her head, she was screaming for her brain to work smart. “Y-Yeah, it was just an allergic reaction to the foods I ate before." She looked at him blankly. She shouldn't have said it, but her mouth did. “You were allergic to shrimp, but you still insisted on eating them. Are you even thinking about yourself?" Eve laughed. She enjoyed the furrowing of his brows despite her numb feeling. She felt free from everything. "I'd like to piss you off more in the future so I can look forward to your grumpy expression," she chirped. Her eyes stared at him without feeling intimidated. She watched as he fell silent as Damien searched for an answer. “I can say that this is not the end of our journey, Ms. Darlington. You seemed to enjoy it a lot,” he replied, facing her. And there was a sense of familiarity, her scent and physical features. "Why is that? I swear I will never cross paths with you again, Mr. Heather. There won't be any next time,” she replied with a smiling face. "Hmm. That's interesting. I wonder what makes you do this. Is it because your boyfriend warned you? Or were you afraid of spending another night with me?" Damien felt like talking to an emotionless woman. Because no matter how annoying he is, Eve's expression is still pleasant. She was smiling widely. “But don't worry, I'm not the type of person to take a woman a second time. Once is enough and if our paths cross again. It would be business matters,” he added again. And somehow her expression changed. “I am not a friend, sir. What you just said matters to me. I felt relieved. I will do everything in my power to prevent me from meeting you.” Hearing Eve, his lips lifted again. He was somehow relieved to know that she planned the same goal. "Who was that man that called you at that time?" “He's Liam Ford and he was my ex." The last word rang in his ears. He wasn't her boyfriend, he was her ex. Yet they once shared an intimate relationship. "Is he the one who got you first?" He knew he was crossing the line. But Damien couldn't hold back. He was a man and he noticed everything about a woman. The Eve Darlington he was talking about was far different from what he had seen on the internet. She was easy to talk to and deal with, which made him take advantage of the situation. "N-no. Will you stop asking me please? I can't stop myself from lying. I told you it was a private matter. How dare you ask me that?" He was relieved. But he also regretted his actions. He had never felt in competition with anyone until he met her. “It's not my fault, woman. I was with Ms. Eve Darlington and I was talking heart to heart. But since you begged me, I'll stay out of it.” His eyes flicked at hers. It was as he started the car's engine and pulled off the road. Damien was already anticipating what their second meeting would be like. He could already imagine her priceless reactions. And that excited him even more. "You're such a jerk, did you know that?" Eva murdered him in her head and wanted to do whatever she could, no matter what, to vent her rage. “You're the first woman to call me that. I should punish you, but since I invaded your personal affairs, I'd like to leave it at that. Now we're even," she was speechless. She can't win with him in her current situation. Her body also gave up, she was tired of being numb and everything she felt was heavy. “Why did you choose to eat grandma's favorite food when you were allergic to shrimp? You could have told her; she would understand." "I don't want to make her feel bad. I already felt bad for lying about us, it's the least I could do to compensate for the guilt I felt." She mumbled slowly, her eyes getting tired and soon she would fall asleep. But she wanted to continue the conversation until they reached her apartment. “You don't have to feel bad about it, she'll forget about it anyway. She misremembered her memories—” "How could you tell your grandmother that? Why is it that your heart was made of stone?" It was just a question for Eve, but it made him stop the car in the middle of the road. “You have no idea-” "If you love something, you will protect it. It's the most honest thing we do as humans. I know she was important to you; she was the only one you got. That's why you wanted me to pretend to be your girlfriend, because you wanted her to be happy. But don't you think it's a cruel way to give her happiness?" "Do you think it's easy for me, Ms. Darlington?" That's harder than managing a crisis in business,” Damien gritted his teeth. His jaw was already hardened. But he tried not to look in her direction because he would just hate her. “Love is not hard, Mr. Heather. It was your heart that was as hard as a rock." The last thing Eve remembered was the sound of the window breaking as she fell asleep. Sleepiness won over her. While on the other hand, Damien's fist was still stuck in the window as he calmed down.
