Chapter Four
Kayden
I sat going through my phone trying to distract myself from her mouthwatering apple pie scent that was driving me crazy. Asim had been surprisingly calm being close to her. In the cell when she placed her hand in mine, bolts of pleasurable tingles exploded throughout my hand and up my arm. I almost gave myself away when she tried to pull her hand away, but I needed to touch her a bit longer for my own sanity.
My jaw hit the ground when I watched her kick that asshole in the balls. She looked sexy as hell and made my c**k stand at attention. However, after one clear look at her face, my blood boiled at the sight of her busted lip which put me in a foul mood. Asim wanted to kill whoever did this to her. No, I couldn’t think like that. I couldn’t accept her; if I did, she would surely die. I would have to wait until she turned 18 to mate and mark her anyway, but no, no, that would not be happening I kept repeating in my head.
“We need our mate,” Asim growled in my head.
“I know we do but we cannot accept her, she would be in danger, and we can’t risk that,” I argued.
“She’ll be in more danger without us you i***t,” Asim insulted. I put the block up because this wasn’t the time to be arguing about this.
My eyes turned to her as she stared out of the window. Everything about her was perfection. As if she sensed my eyes on her, she shifted her gaze to me.
“So, how long have you been an Alpha of your pack,” she asked while her beautiful grey eyes captivated me.
“Three years. My father passed the title to me when I turned 19,” It took all of my strength, but I was able to look away and down at my phone again. I couldn’t let the power of the mate bond overtake me. I couldn’t accept her, not only because she was from Sable Lake but because he I took her as my mate, her life would be ruined. She’s innocent and just lost her family, I couldn’t do that to her.
“Why 19, is that when you found your mate,”
My eyes met hers and moved down to her busted lip which instantly fueled my veins with rage again.
Harvey did this,” I fumed as Asim viciously growled in my head.
“Yeah, it’s fine. I’ve had worse,” she brushed it off and flashed a breathtaking smile. Every fiber in my body was pushing me to find Harvey and kill him slowly for hurting my mate. Asim wanted Harvey’s blood and nothing else would satisfy him.
“No mate yet,” I lied. I just wanted to change the subject to get my mind off Harvey.
She resumed to looking out the window and I noticed that her shirt was pulled down her shoulder. She had a tattoo on her left shoulder. It was beautiful head of a wolf howling to a full moon.
“I like your tattoo,” I told her when I noticed it.
She touched the back of her shoulder, and gently traced her fingertips along the tattoo. “It’s not a tattoo, it’s my birthmark,” she revealed, and my eyes briefly went wide. I’d never seen a birthmark look like a tattoo before; interesting.
“It’s beautiful,” I complimented, and my heart almost burst when she flashed her enchanting smile at me.
I had no idea how would be able to reject her and let her go. A storm of emotions swirled inside me as I struggled with what to and struggled against the power of the mate pull.
Her eyelids drooped and her body sagged as he leaned her head back against the seat. Soon enough, I saw her chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm and I knew that she was asleep. Before I could look at my phone again, her head slid sideways and landed on my shoulder, and the tingles once again danced through my body. I sighed, leaving her head on me.
I gently wrapped my arm around her, pulling her closer to me, feeling the warmth of her body against mine. The softness of her breath against my chest created a soothing rhythm in the quiet SUV. The weight of her head on my shoulder brought a sense of tranquility, yet beneath it all, a bittersweet realization loomed. As much as it felt right to hold her, our forbidden love was an impossibility. My destiny had been determined, and I refused to subject my beloved to the same dark path. She deserved a future far brighter than mine.
I wanted her to be completely at ease, so I gently repositioned her, cradling her head in my lap. As I gazed down, my heart warmed at the sight of her peaceful slumber, her innocence radiating. Aching to experience the sensation, I longed to glide my fingers through her braided hair, marveling at its texture. Just one touch, to savor the feeling forever.
I delicately caressed her hair, feeling its silky texture beneath my fingertips. As I breathed in, her alluring scent filled the air, engulfing me completely, even if it was temporary.

As soon as my phone rang, I quickly picked it up.
“Yeah,” I spoke into the phone.
“Sir, there was a problem, we were attacked,” the voice on the other end reported.
“Attacked by whom,” my voice rose with irritation.
“An alpha I’d never seen before. He and his men killed or captured most of my men. “Me and a couple of my guys barely made it out,” Harvey explained, his voice laced with exhaustion. My blood boiled with anger, my muscles tensing as I recalled the mission. He had one job, to deliver my queen to me, and yet here we stood, empty-handed.
“Where is she? Where is my chosen?” I demanded, the muscles in my jaw tight as I anxiously awaited his response. The scent of anticipation hung heavy in the surrounding air. Every nerve in my body was on edge. My heart pounded in my chest as I braced myself for his answer.
He hesitated before confessing, “We lost her, sir,” his voice filled with regret.
“You lost my chosen!” I screamed in frustration, the force of my anger causing my hand to lash out and strike the lamp on my cluttered desk. The sound of the crashing glass reverberated through the room as the shattered pieces scattered across the floor. Taking in a deep breath, I attempted to steady myself, feeling the rapid rise and fall of my chest.
With determination and a tinge of fear in his voice, he assured the sir, “I’m going to find her.” You have my word.” Once I had her in my arms, I would make him pay for this, leaving no room for mercy.
I carefully slid open the top drawer of my desk, and there it was - the picture that had captured my attention from the moment I laid eyes on it.
“My sweet Sonja. I promise I will find you, and when I do, we will be together. Together we will rule and will be invincible,” I whispered to the picture while I traced my finger on her smiling face.
My door creaked open, filling the room with a faint sound that echoed through the silence. In walked John, my second in command, his footsteps resolute. I could feel the weight of his presence, a steadfastness that only comes from years of unwavering loyalty. In that moment, I knew without a doubt that I could place my life in his hands and trust him completely.
“Javier, I heard a commotion,” his brows furrowed.
“Someone attacked Harvey’s compound, and Sonja is missing. I need all of your people on it We need to find her,” I ordered, with desperation laced in my words.
As soon as possible, I’ll contact our contact with the rogues and coordinate their assistance in the search. “Don’t worry, boss,” John assured, his voice filled with confidence, before he walked out of the office.
I buried my face in my hands, overwhelmed by thoughts of her. The room fell silent, except for the faint sound of my own rapid breaths. I vowed that anyone who dared touch or harm my beloved chosen would suffer a torturous fate, their life slipping away with each agonizing moment.
