(MARILYN’S POV)
It was still really early in the morning when I hurried out of the motel/bar. Luckily for me most of the people in the bar were passed out all over and asleep and so I hurried back to the rented apartment where mum and Liam were staying.
Immediately I got in, my mum rushed towards me and gave me a hug sobbing. Liam who had been dozing on a chair woke up now and stood up with his arms crossed.
“Why would you do this to me Lyn? You had me worried sick!” Mum wailed crying.
I hugged her back feeling guilt nag at me for my behavior. Not only had I stayed out overnight leaving mum completely unaware of my location, I had given my virginity to a stranger.
“Where did you sleep? Are you okay?” Mum said as she searched my eyes and touched my body,
“I’m fine mum. I’m really sorry for getting you worried. I slept at a motel because it got late and I was worried about walking back in the dark.” I lied.
Mum knew I was a virgin and no way was I telling her what had happened last night.
I felt ashamed and scared that she would sniff it out of me. I had a terrible hangover and I couldn’t stop thinking of the cowboy from last night.
“I’m sorry about the way I behaved also.” I said to my mum and Liam.
“It’s okay honey.” Mum said to me, “why don’t you go and freshen up so we can have breakfast and get to our new home.”
I nodded without a word and went to the room to freshen up. I was silent for most of the morning. During breakfast and throughout the ride to this new town. My mind was buried deep in thoughts. For the first time in a month, I did not think of Chris or Andrea. I thought of the gorgeous cowboy instead.
I was lost in flashback of the intense and passionate night we spent, when the car came to halt and Liam said in a cheerful voice.
“Welcome to Sundown Hollows Ladies.” He said.
I knew that I was doomed. There was no turning back and this was my new life. Looking around, I felt angry with mum as tears pricked my eyes. How could mum do this to me? How could she? I watched as she and Liam got down from the Chevy truck and I wanted to wipe of that annoying and excited smile from her face. I wanted to stay in the car. I wanted to disappear back to New York back to my old life. But I could not. Not only because of mum but because there was no joy to go back to.
I thought of what my other friends would think of this town, Sundown Hollows. Looking out the window, I noticed one thing first, it was very dusty here even though it was only the month of April. I could also hear a strange whirring sound. The house set in the middle of the compound was good looking though. It was nothing compared to our penthouse apartment in New York but it did not look horrible..
“Lyn! Come on out will you?” Mum said and her cheeks looked flushed. “Liam wants to show us around.”
I scoffed “No thank you.” I said pulling a sulky face.
I saw the Flicker of hurt on mum’s face and I knew that I had hurt her by telling her off just now.
Well she hurt me first. Liam rubbed her shoulder and then walked to me.
“Well why don’t you come on out. You don’t plan on staying in the car forever do you?” He said.
I glared at him. He always did this, acted like he was some kind of nice father figure. News flash! He could never be my father. My father was dead and that space was erased. Liam had the guts to act nice when he was the reason why we are here in the first place.
“Tell you what Jenna, why don’t we leave going around later, let’s see the house first. Get our things in and settled in, see our rooms. You are going to love it.” He said looking between mum and i offering us both smiles.
Mum smiled again looking excited like a little girl, I did not.
I muttered to myself but I did get out of the truck holding my purse around my shoulder. Some workers came and introduced themselves nicely to us but I was in no mood to fraternize and so I let mum do all the nice talking and stuff.
“Oh Hy nice to meet you. I’m Jenna and this is my daughter Lyn.” She was saying.
I kept my face moody and followed them in to the mansion. It looked pretty aesthetic and even though I hated to admit, very cool .
“Oh this is beautiful. Lyn you love spaces like this.” Mum said excited
“If I was visiting.” I said but they ignored me.
Mum was so annoying, acting like she was so happy to be here and not caring how her only child felt. Liam led us through the round stairs and to the rooms.
“This is yours Lyn. It has the best view.” He said to me giving me a wink as if it was such a great thing.
“Gee thanks” I said with sarcasm but he did not catch it because he and mum were off to see their own rooms.
One of the workers who was handling my luggage opened the door and dropped the things for me.
“Thanks.” I muttered without enthusiasm
“You’re welcome.” He said with a wide smile just before he let himself out.
I looked at him, what is it with everyone here?
Damn Liam for being right! The room had a balcony with the most beautiful view, for one second, I felt so serene. The vast fields and the clouds with a lake. It was breathtaking . I reached in to my pocket for my phone and took a picture of it.
It was then that I noticed that there was no bar for network. My eyes opened widely and I shrieked. I raced out of the room and yelled for mum.
I heard a door open and slam and then turned around in the direction of my name that was being called.
“What’s the problem?” Mum asked me looking worried. Liam came from behind her.
“There’s no network. Not even one bar.” I said
Mum looked relieved as if it was not such a big deal and I wanted to shriek again.
“Calm down Lyn!” She said
“Calm down? There is no bar. How am I going to survive?” I asked her
“Just well. Not everything is about your phone.” She said to me sternly.
“I know you’ve got to be kidding!” I said “I am an influencer mum! My life is already ruined and now no network? I can’t live like this!”
“Easy easy.” Liam said coming in between us. “I promise to get that worked out okay? But for now there’s some network outside. I’ll fix it for you in a few days.”
I wanted to say more. I wanted to say that I wished that I had just stayed back but I settled for a groan and then I stomped down the stairs and all the way out of the house in search of network.
I held my phone up and went around but I could not find anything and I wanted to scream in frustration until I noticed one bar flickering on and off.
Hope lingered in my chest and I followed the signal until it led me to what looked like a barn. I stopped at the door wrinkling my nose at the smell. I had no choice and so I got in.
When I climbed a bucket that was turned upside down, I almost cried in joy as I got three whole bars of network. I held my phone steadily celebrating in my mind and then-
“Who the hell are you?” A deep and unfriendly voice interrupted me and my balance was interrupted as the bucket wobbled leading me to fall to the ground taking the stranger down with me knocking his cowboy hat to the ground.
