LEAH
After the last run-in with Adrian, I sprinted down the hall, slamming open my father’s door without a second thought. My eyes locked onto him instantly, my breath catching in my throat. But the room was empty except for him—no Sarah, no one else. Just him, seated in his heavy leather chair, fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were white. His eyes snapped to mine, blazing with anger, unmoving.
Without a word, I turned on my heel and rushed back down the hall, the door slamming behind me. My ribs ached with every hurried step toward my room, hoping to find Sarah there.
When I finally burst into my room, my heart lurched. Sarah was huddled in the corner, knees pulled tightly to her chest, her back pressed against the wooden bed stand. She didn’t even look up.
“Sarah!” I called, moving toward her.
She just signed, keeping her face turned to the wall. “I think I just need to be alone.”
“Sarah, listen to me,” I whispered, dropping down beside her. “I’m doing this for both of us. If I don’t, Father will force you to take my place, and I can’t let that happen. You’re barely 18.” My voice broke, the weight of everything pressing down on me.
She looked away, but I could see the tears brimming in her eyes. “I wish there was another way, but that would mean losing you to a beast whose true nature is a whirlwind. He could snap my neck in a matter of seconds or get raged and burn down our pack. Why would I let you take my place in such a situation?”
She looked at me, and I immediately wiped off the tear stain on her face. “I love you too much to let you go. I promised my mother I would protect and look after you. This is me doing so.”
*I saw him.* She signed.
“Alpha Damien?”, she nodded.
*He won't hurt you, Leah.” She signed again. Remembering our encounter at the foyer, I thought twice about that. Only his thunderstorm yell was enough to shake me to the bones.
“I hope not,” I replied after a long pause.
*You are going to be a Luna now right?* She signed and I nodded, the dread filling me up. Being a Luna.
*I’m going to miss you,* she signed.
And that was it. I couldn’t hold back any longer. The tears I’d been fighting finally spilled over, hot and relentless. I wrapped my arms around her, feeling her body shake as her tears soaked my shoulder.
“I’m going to miss you too,” I choked out. We sat there, clinging to each other in silence, all the words we couldn’t say hanging heavy in the air. It felt like the first real moment we’d shared since Mom passed, and yet, it was the hardest one to bear.
Eventually, sleep overtook us, wrapped in each other’s arms like we used to as kids.
*************
When dawn came, Sarah helped me pack up in silence, and after one last hug, I climbed into the car, trying to swallow the lump in my throat.
The maids took Sarah in, not giving her a chance to watch me leave.
Father didn't even try to reach out or say nice things to me in pretense. He's so careful about never losing his deals that he would rather watch me go with no care whatsoever.
Did he not even love me in the slightest? I believe I was not a mistake to him, but his first daughter with his chosen mate.
I felt a gentle touch on my shoulder, snapping back to reality, a white hand towel was right in my face. It was Kai offering it, The Beta to Alpha Damien. “Thank you.”
I said and wiped off the absentminded tears that had slipped out.
Kai appears nice, I wonder what it must be like living with the beast himself? Is Kai also like him?
“We have to go, Luna Leah.”
Luna…
I nodded and slipped into the car, staring at the mansion, the only place I knew growing up.
The drive felt like forever, and yet, all too soon, we arrived. My new “home” loomed ahead, a fortress of stone and steel, massive and intimidating. I wasn’t sure what I’d expected, but it wasn’t this—the high walls, towering trees, guard dogs pacing the grounds, flowers scattered in precise patterns. It was all so… calculated. Beautiful, yes, but it felt like a cage wrapped in roses.
Maids appeared out of nowhere, taking my bags without a word, and we made our way inside. The ceilings soared high above, walls lined with art and marble. It screamed power and wealth—a kind of opulence that felt almost oppressive. Each step I took echoed, the vastness pressing down on me.
Kai led me to a massive wooden door, pausing to knock. He turned to me, bowing slightly. “You can go in. And… welcome, Luna.” His half-smile was oddly comforting.
I watched him walk away, trying to gather my nerves. Heart pounding, I knocked, but didn’t wait for a response. I cracked the door open, just enough to peek inside—and froze.
I felt like my stomach dropped. Damian was there, but not alone. He was with a woman, their bodies tangled together in the most intimate way possible. He was behind her, his hands gripping her hips as if he couldn’t bear to let go, moving in a way that was both powerful and raw. She moaned softly, her lips parted, clearly lost in the moment. My entire body went cold as I watched, transfixed, horrified.
“What am I doing here?” I whispered, my voice barely audible even to myself.
I didn’t know whether to back away or confront him, but before I could make up my mind, he noticed me.
His eyes met mine, a flicker of surprise quickly replaced by something else—a look so intense it held me in place.
The woman noticed too, her eyes widening. “Alpha?” she murmured, clearly confused as to why I was disrupting them.
He lunged out of her and wrapped himself with the duvet, he turned to the woman, giving her a cold, dismissive look.
“Get out,” he commanded. She scrambled up, clutching her clothes as she hurried past me, her shoulder brushing against mine in her haste. I barely noticed.
What the hell is going on here?
