My life now

1992 Words
LEAH I heard a small awkward cough behind me, and I froze and slowly turned around. I met a tall-looking lady with really long curly hair; her olive skin tone was blinking under the corridor light. “Luna?” she called like she had doubts. “Urm hi, mind coming with me for a sec?” She asked and I nodded. How could I decline? She literally caught me eavesdropping on the Alpha and his Beta. I followed behind her as we exited the corridor, walking into the next. It was awkward no doubt. Then she halted and turned to me with a smile on her face, “I am Andy and I am the head chef. I was sent to your room to make inquiries about what you would love to have for dinner, but urm…” she paused and her smile widened, and not a cute kind but a creepy kind. “You seemed busy, Luna.” “I am sorry.” Alpha Damien asked me to wait out for him, it was a quick discussion with him.” I lied, and the lady nodded as if buying it. I knew she didn't; it was clear in her face that she caught me, but she refused to press further. Maybe it's because of my position. “I am sorry for the inconvenience…” “Oh please, don't Luna. It is my duty to serve you regardless. Come, I will lead you back to your room, then you can make your choice for dinner.” “Yes, of course, thank you,” I said. We arrived back in Damien's room, and I sat on the couch, waiting for her to list whatever she had in mind. “I was just discussing meal options with the other chefs.” she began cheerfully as if talking about it made her happy. “Oh, no, I haven’t,” I admitted, feeling my stomach rumble at the thought of food. “I guess I lost track of time.” “Let’s change that!” she said all smiles .“How about a creamy mushroom risotto or maybe a spicy shrimp pasta? Both are crowd favorites.” “Both sound amazing,” I replied, my mouth watering at the thought. “I think I’d love to try the risotto.” “Excellent choice! I’ll make sure it’s extra special for you,” she said, her enthusiasm infectious. Andy day excused herself, and I remained glued to the couch, thinking about Sarah. Was she fine? Or tangled in Adrian's path, not in the care of the maids? Starving? Positive, I had to be positive. Sarah is fine; She's out of Adriana's path, she's in the care of the maids, and she's not starving. Everything is fine. My mission here is to find out everything about Damien. Find out how the council works, why he is so ruthless, and what makes him powerful. Alone in Damien’s room, I let my gaze wander around, trying to take it all in. Gothic. Dark. Stifling. Not exactly cozy, but what was I expecting? Soft pillows and a fireplace? A ruthless Alpha, this room is very fitting for him. My fingers drifted over the shelves lined with neat, dust-free rows of books. I pulled one out absentmindedly, flipping through a couple of pages before the weight of it just… bored me. I slipped it back or tried to, but my hand caught the edge of another book. It wobbled and tumbled down, landing with a soft thud. “Oh, Goddess,” I muttered, bending down to pick it up. And that’s when I saw it—a glint of gold peeking out from behind the fallen book. My fingers reached for it, curious. A pendant, heavy and cold to the touch, with delicate filigree carved into its surface, almost… mesmerizing. It had these tiny inscriptions, Greek maybe? My fingers traced the curves of it, wondering what it could mean, when— “What the hell are you doing?” I jumped, my heart lurching up into my throat, and the pendant slipped from my hands, clattering to the floor. The air turned sharp and electric. Damien’s glare could’ve turned stone to dust. I forced myself to breathe, fighting the urge to apologize, to shrink into myself, to just disappear. Seriously, Leah, get it together. He came closer. I barely had time to process what was happening before his hand clamped around my arm, pulling me upright. Damien’s grip was fierce and possessive, almost like he was daring me to pull away. His voice was a low, dangerous growl. “You can’t just go touching things that don’t belong to you. Especially not here.” I swallowed, the words catching in my throat. Nodding seemed like the safest bet. I let my eyes drop to the floor, wishing it would just open up and swallow me whole. He let go, leaving a dull ache in my arm. Crouching down, he picked up the pendant, tucking it carefully back where it came from before he shot me another look—this one colder, if that was possible. “Kai!” Damien’s shout echoed through the room. The door creaked open, and Kai appeared, his expression caught somewhere between concern and obedience. Damien’s gaze flicked to me, then back to Kai. “Take her somewhere else. She shouldn’t be in here. She can't stay here.” Kai hesitated, his mouth opening as if to object. “But… you two are supposed to—” A glare from Damien shut him up. Not arguing with that. I took a shaky breath, silently kicking myself forever, thinking I would be able to find something useful by snooping around. Yeah, great job, Leah. Make things worse for yourself. Smart. I didn’t wait to be told twice. Head down, I walked toward Kai, letting him lead me out. Anything to be far, far away from Damien’s glare. Once we were in the hallway, Kai glanced at me, his expression softening. “I’m… sorry about that.” His voice was low, almost apologetic, but it did little to soothe the embarrassment clawing at me. I just nodded. “Yeah, thanks,” I muttered, barely able to muster any other response as he led me down a different corridor to a guest room. The walls felt close, the silence heavy, pressing down on me from all sides. As soon as I was alone, I shut the door and sank onto the bed, feeling the exhaustion settle into my bones. This day was shot. Completely, utterly ruined. THE NEXT DAY I woke up more agile and a little happy than I intended. Andy returning with her delicious meals was a blessing in disguise. I ate my fill and felt a little calmer and less guilty. I yawned and got out of my bed, walking towards the window, the sun had graced the horizon, casting warm glows on the earth. I loved the morning sun, no doubt; it reminded me of a fresh day to continue life. My eyes landed on my bags, which had been kept in the corner of the closet. I approached it and opened it up, taking out my phone, tablet, and a picture of my mom, Sarah, and me. It was the first time we went skiing, young amateurs and a beautiful damsel like our mother. I remember the cool breeze, the snow, our skiing boards, Mom's laughter, Sarah's laughter, my laughter. It had been years since I last heard any of them. I pressed the picture to my chest, hugging it. “I miss you, Mom,” I whispered and kissed the photo. I closed my bag and returned to my bedside, dropping the picture on the nightstand. I took my tablet and went on Facetime, I had to talk to Sarah, to know how she was doing. The screen read Connecting, I waited patiently, my stomach churning from both hunger and anxiety. Come in Sarah, pick up, I miss you so much. The call went off, I sighed and tapped her name again, it brought back the same phrase, connecting. But this connection was taking longer. The screen went off again. My heart sank,a knock followed, jerking me out of my thoughts. I reluctantly stood up, taking slowly strides to the door. I opened it and met Andy there. She was with someone else, a lady. She was tall but not compared to Andy. About my height, her glasses and brunette hair made her look like a typical teacher, especially with the bite pad she had in hand. “Hi.” I greeted, forcing a smile. “Luna Leah.” The lady bowed with all smiles. “Good morning Luna.” Andy also greeted me. I opened my door wider , letting them in. “How was your night?” Andy asked. “Perfect.” I replied. “This is Cleo, she's the wedding planner.” A day informed, while Cleo waved. “It's nice to meet the fierce and daring woman who has captured the heart of our ruthless Alpha. We don't see that everyday.” Cleo said in a jolly voice. Andy nudged her, passing her a warning look. “Forgive me Luna Leah,I tend to get excited very often.” Andy shook her head smiling, “I have a list of breakfast choices, which would you prefer, Luna?” “Anything at all.” I replied, overwhelmed by the attention. Adrian made the maids count Sarah and I out as occupants of my father's mansion. I stole food for us ,or ate crumbs if I arrived too late. “Alright,I will bring you something special.” Andy said and dismissed herself, leaving me alone with Cleo. She stood there smiling as if she had seen a gold statue she was admiring. “Your room is pretty.” She said smiling like a child who was offered a lollipop. “Thank you.” I replied. "Would you like to see some of my designs for your wedding venues?" Cleo asked, holding her breath like she was nervous. I'd say no. "Uh, sure," I said, giving her a little nod. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but Cleo had this way about her that was... different. Like she lived halfway in her own world and just visited ours now and then. She gave me a quick smile and started rummaging through her bag, clearly searching for something in the chaos of her own making. Suddenly, everything in her bag just... spilled out. It was like her bag had exploded, scattering makeup, receipts, loose paper, and little bits and pieces everywhere. She let out a small yelp and scrambled to pick it all up, muttering, "Sorry, sorry, hold on." I bent down to help, gathering a stray lipstick and a couple of pens that had rolled under a chair. "It’s fine, really," I assured her, though I couldn’t help but laugh a little at her clumsiness. For a second, she looked up at me, cheeks slightly pink, and managed a grateful smile. Then I heard footsteps. Andy was back, and from the look on her face, she was not thrilled. She had this apologetic, kind of expression, and as she reached us, she let out a quiet sigh. I could just make out the words she whispered under his breath as he took Cleo gently by the arm. "I knew bringing you here was a bad idea," she muttered, her voice low but unmistakable. I pretended not to notice, but there was something about the whole thing that made me... relax, in a weird way. As I looked at Cleo, fussing and flustered, trying to scoop up her life from the floor, I felt a smile creep onto my face. I don’t know why, but for a second there, I forgot all about my own worries. The mess, the awkwardness—it was all just... human. Real.
