The damaged news
Leah’s POV
“Leah!” My name echoed in the hallway, thunderous and heart-wrenching. He's coming, and I know there's no point hiding.
He will find me, and punishment will follow. Sighing, I step out from behind the closet, my legs leading me to the door. Sweat-filled, I clumsily opened the door, and before I could set my vision, a hard palm landed on my face, sending jolts of pain through my face.
I backed away, tears gathering.
“What the hell were you thinking?”
His eyes flashed, but I stood still, wiping off every last trace of my tears.
There’s no escaping him or the hatred he’s always shown me—a hatred our father encourages.
“I don't know what you are talking about.” I lied, and another sharp sting greeted my cheek. I bit my lips, suppressing a groan, but the pain did not stop there.
He grabbed my arm and a handful of my hair, my scalp burned under his grip. “You dare act dumb with me? After what you did? Father has lost all the horses because of your mischievous stupidity.” He yelled, releasing his grip and tossing me aside.
My elbow struck the bed frame, and Tony whimpered and escaped my lips. I held it, my legs curling up as if it would ease the pang.
“Those were worth a f*****g fortune; congratulations, we lost them.” He barked, startling me. I remained silent; Adrian would take offense to everything I saw and hurt me even further; he might also get Sarah involved; I can't let her take a stroke for me.
“Just as useless as your dead mother.”
“Don't you dare!” I growled before I could think twice or stop myself. My index finger was pointing directly at Adrian. His eyes blazed and I instantly knew I was dead.
He grabbed my hair and pulled me up leading me out of the room. I kept struggling with his strong hand, tears running down my face, the pain was unbearable.
My heart sank as my brain registered the familiar routes. “Please Adrian…not the dungeon. Please…”
“A day or two will set your dumb head right.” His grip tightened, increasing the pain.
“Would it not?”
“Yes. Yes, please.”
Adrian didn't listen, there was no remorse in that dead heart of his. He threw me into the dark cell and locked the door.
The floor was cold against my skin, nothing I wasn't used to. My thoughts were completely filled with worry for Sarah. If Adrian were to get a glimpse of my sixteen-year-old sister, he could hurt her the same way he hurt me, and our father doesn't even care, not when he would do the same to us anytime, any day.
I lay on the floor, closing my eyes and wishing for sleep to come, anything to take me out of this hell hole, even if it's just a dream.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
The cackling sound of keys caught my attention; I sprang up as if I had been chased from my dream back to this cruel world.
“Come on out.” I despised that voice so much, but I had to beg this time, anything else but this cold, damp place.
“You are so lucky you spent just a day here, Leah; I had very great plans for you. However, fate is on your side today; you see, Father is expecting a grand visitor today, so you will be on your best behavior and keep that mute sister of yours away from anyone's sight. Do you understand me?”
I held back a snort, “As you wish.” Adrian kept smiling; it looked excited, which was very rare; well, that's none of my business. Whatever is making him happy, I hope it takes his life too.
I returned to my room and sat in the shower for as long as I could keep count, probably an hour. I tried to wash it all off, the pain, the assault, the dungeon.
“Leah.”
I froze and turned off the water. Father. He's here, why is he here?
I put on my robe and stepped out. “F–Father.” I winced; why was I stuttering? Why wouldn't I? I was standing before the devil himself.
“I heard of your mishaps, and I am sure Adrian had taken care of that. So I will get straight to the point.” He sighed and smiled, his eyes twinkling. “We are expecting esteemed guests…”
Esteemed guests, grand visitors, it's all I have been hearing all morning.
“Alpha Damien of the Dark wood pack.”
Fear, mixed with amusement, coursed through me, and a laugh tore out of my mouth.
“The king of all Alpha's? Coming to our pack? For what exactly, what is it that you think you could offer such a being?” I summoned up more than enough courage to throw those words at my father's face.
Alpha Damien is the most feared Alpha in the entire realm, a brute that kills for fun and rips people to shreds, and his father was not spared from his killing spree.
Father laughed, his grin widening, “Oh, I have a lot to offer him.” He stepped forward and tried to touch my face but I backed off.
In seconds, I understood what he meant. “No. That's not true, you are just trying to pull my legs.”
“No, my dearest daughter, Alpha Damien is to take you as his bride. He wishes to marry, and you are the perfect candidate for that. Become a Luna of such a thriving pack as his. A dream come true.”
My heart thumped loudly in my chest, disbelief gnawing at me. “Is this a joke?”
“It’s not a joke.” He stepped back, his smile faded, replaced with a sober expression.
“Your union will breed more power for me.” He said, so casually as if he wasn't placing my life on the line.
“Okay, let me get this straight. You need to hold onto more power and pay the dues that you owe and you’re asking me to marry the most fearful alpha in history?” I asked in sheer disbelief.
“You could say I want more power, yes. But I don't owe anyone anything. This is simply collaboration to birth a relationship so powerful, no one would be able to look me in the eyes and challenge my authority.” He slowly paced.
“And after you become his wife, you will be my spy, find out everything about him, everything that makes him a leader, everything that makes him strong. You will bring me those ideas, and I will use them to take him down. Once I have his pack,o will be unstable, the most feared Alpha.”
I scoffed, shaking my head. “What…” I trailed off, short of words. I still had a hard time believing this man was my father.
“You would rather give your useless daughter away as the price?! Make her the spy who would die trying to find your answers for your greedy thirst for power? What the f**k are you thinking?” I challenge, something my father hated more than anything else in the world.
“Don’t you talk to me like that!” He points an accusatory finger at me.
“I’m your father! And the leader of this pack”
I scoffed.“You are asking me to marry a ruthless brute who killed his father, to save himself, Father. I can talk to you any way I want, all things considered. I refuse and you can't force me”
He closed the distance between us, grabbed my arm, and slapped me across my face. “I can't force you?” he growled, but I didn't falter. I was too angry to care anymore.
“I hope you know now that a slap as weak as that would not make me go back on my word,” I said and roughly evaded his grip.
I turned to leave, probably to find comfort in Sarah's arm.
The worst he can do is keep hitting me or throw me back in the dungeon and refuse the maids to give me food for the next couple of days.
None of which I'm not already used to.
“I don't think you will enjoy the result of your disobedience, Leah.”
“Go to f*****g hell,” I yelled and dashed out, just in case he was trying to come after me.
