Greater good

LEAH We arrived at the foyer, he turned to me with a questioning gaze. “Alpha Damien, I…” my chest tightened as I struggled to speak. “I would like to spend one more night with my sister before I leave.” I forced these words out. My voice betrayed the fear I was trying to suppress. “I haven't had the chance to properly explain what has been happening, and I feel like tonight would be a perfect time for that.” My heart thudded painfully against my chest as I watched him clench his jaws so tightly that his muscles twisted beneath his skin. He glared at me, scanning me with his dark and piercing eyes, and I could tell that he was not pleased with what I had just said. He was here to take me away from my family, and anything contrary to that was utterly rubbish to him. His silence felt heavier than the tension already dense in the air, and the more he scowled, the more his glimmer melted. “So,” he replied slowly with his deep masculine voice. “What are you trying to say?” “I mean…” Before I could complete my sentence, he snapped, his face fuming with fury. “Are you trying to make me look stupid for coming here?” His voice boomed, making my skin jump. “No,” I strained to let out, feeling a sudden rush of tears welling at the corner of my eyes, threatening to spill. “I think what she is trying to say is that she would like to spend tonight with her sister before she officially becomes your wife. Alpha!” A voice said behind me, beating me to my own words before I had the chance to think of my next response. "Kai! You know not of what is happening here. So keep your opinions to yourself.” The man who had spoken earlier approached us, his gleaming with worry. “Now's not the time to startle her, she's going to be the Luna of our pack,” Kai stated in whispers, but I could hear because I was barely an inch from them. Alpha Damien sighed, “Since you have decided to speak on her behalf, you would stay in this house with her and ensure she is brought to me tomorrow morning.” He tore his glare away from me. “Have a good day, Leah,” my name rolled off his tongue in cold waves; he walked out immediately, leaving me short of words. Although I was quite relieved that he was gone and someone was here to prevent my father and my brother from hitting me, I still couldn't understand his odd interest in me and why he agreed that I be his Luna. The silence in the house was broken by footsteps approaching; I found my father striding towards us; he followed us out here, no other explanation needed. Father wanted to speak, but seeing Kai, he just gave me an annoyed look. I sighed heavily, shutting my eyes to calm the tension surging through me. At this point, there was nothing else that I could have said that would seem right to anyone. “Leah! Show Kai the room that he would spend the night in,” he ordered, as though he couldn't wait to get Kai and me out of his sight. I could sense the anger in his voice even though he tried to hide it. It was simmering just below the surface. “This way,” I veered around, assuming that he was following me while I walked towards the long corridor that had doors facing each other. As I stopped at the last room that my mother used to occupy, I opened it, avoiding any chance to look inside after years of not doing so. “This is yours, sir; if you need anything, don't hesitate to inform me,” I replied, sniffing in the floral scent that loomed in the air. It was my mother’s scent. The tears that had dried were beginning to surface again. Its sting, pricking my eyelids as I blink rapidly. I knew my father would always find a way to punish me, and sending me here was my punishment. “Thank you,” he replied with a half smile playing on his lips. I nodded gradually and left him standing there without saying a word to him. I needed to find a place away from prying eyes so I could finally let out all my tears, but first, I had to find Sarah. The last time I had seen her was when she told me about what Adrian had revealed to her before I was beckoned by my father. She ought to have returned to her room. I moved quickly through our dimly lit corridor, searching for any sign of Sarah, but to my dismay, she was nowhere to be found. “Aren’t you tired?” Adrian said. At that instant, I spun around quickly to face him. My heart is racing. “Aren’t you tired of being a nuisance to my father and me? What is the meaning of what you did there?” He seethed, walking quickly towards me. “Where is Sarah?” I asked, ignoring his question. “Sarah?” He scoffed, “Oh! Sarah is locked up in Father's chambers, just in case you try to do something stupid.” he replied as a smirk curled up his lips. “No, he can't do that.” I quivered, widening my eyes in shock. What could Father possibly be telling Sarah? She couldn't speak, and since our mother died, she barely gave her attention. My lips began to shake, and my body fluttered as my mind reeled with so many thoughts. “ It's for the greater good, we all know how mischievous you can be.” Adrain squinted. “You did this, your disgusting act of trying to get your way with me, this is why you did this, told Sarah awful things and now you have her locked up in father's chambers. Why are you even doing this? You are supposed to be our brother, a second father, but you act like my worst nightmare.” “That's because I am, and I will be a lot more than that.” I gritted my teeth, “You bastard! Get her out of there”. I barked and Adrian's frown grew even more. Then without warning, he drew back his hand, fingers splayed wide, and swung it towards me. I barely had enough time to react; my instincts kicked in, and my body moved to the side as I watched him stumble to the ground. He forcefully dashed his head on the hard floor, his hand barely shielding it. I glanced at him as he lay still for a while. Before he carefully rolled off the side and stood up. Their knees were trembling as he placed his hands on the floor to support him. As much as I hated to say this, I parted my lips and allowed these words to slip out. “Shortly, I will be the Luna of the greatest park to ever exist, and I will cut off your hand before you even think of slapping me again.” My throat felt tight as I angrily fiddled with my fingers. With a grunt, he yelled, “You will pay for this!” “We will see about that.” I walked off, not even making the slightest attempt to turn back.
