Chapter 7: Try Hard (1)
***
The following days passed by rather uneventfully for Felix. He worked his usual job from home as a call center employee. Talking on the phone for about eight hours a day wasn’t the most enjoyable experience but it certainly paid his bills while he pursued his dream in acting…
“You’re having issues with your internet connection? Did you try restarting the router?” Felix asked, “Ah, you have I see, I will check the issue then…” He spoke in a mellow voice and sounded very friendly and diligent, while his inner thoughts were starkly different. ‘Damned old man… do you think I magically know what your problem is? If you’d stop yelling at the phone I’d be able to search much faster instead of listening to you whining!’ He thought to himself but deciding not to voice his displeasure he simply stated. “I have sent a request to fix the issue, you can expect the connection to be restored in less than thirty minutes. Have a nice day.” With that he ended the call and leaned back in his chair…
“What a drag… dealing with rude clients is one thing… but they’re so incredibly entitled on top of everything…” Felix complained out loud as he stretched out his tired arms. His shift for the day was finally over and he had time for himself. However he decided to use that time to learn the script for the scenes that were going to be recorded in less than a week from now…
Excitement welling up inside him, Felix stood up from his desk and headed to his bed where he’d left the first part of the script. They hadn’t allowed him to read thorough the rest yet since they didn’t want any spoilers to be leaked accidentally.
He laid down on his bed and began reading, the script was complex and the dialogue wasn’t easy to learn. However Felix was used to complicated instructions and more difficult reading material, he began dissecting the work bit by bit as he read through it. He put notes and pauses on places in the script where he was supposed to bring out a certain emotion, he also added specific mannerisms he could do in those situations. He was like a student studying hard for his final exams. He spent about two hours in total and managed to go through the entire first half of the script. Unfortunately the same day he’d worked extra hours as a call center employee and he was as tired as a man could be…
Deciding not to do too much he headed to the bathroom to take a shower but his phone rang, stopping him. ‘Who could it be at this time of day?’ He wondered to himself, since the man didn’t have any friends, or close relatives that would call him out of nowhere he wasn’t expecting any calls that weren’t work related either…
“Hello?” Felix said as he picked up the phone, the voice on the other end of the line was a woman’s, one that he faintly recognized from before.
“It’s been so long Lexi! I can’t believe you haven’t changed your number yet! Lucky!” The woman’s voice was unbelievably boisterous, her voice was pleasant to the ears, however not to the man that was listening to her.
‘I feel like I’ll get a head ache if I talk to her for more than several seconds…’ Felix thought to himself as he pressed his fingertips on his temple. “Sorry but I don’t seem to recall, who is this?” He asked with the kindest voice imaginable. And it was the truth, he didn’t remember the woman’s face nor her name, her voice was the only thing he found familiar in her but it wasn’t enough for him to associate with a person. Given the fact that he hears thousands of voices from thousands of different people every day…
“Lexi, I’m sorry I didn’t say my name! So rude of me…” The woman quickly apologized, then as if nothing had happened continued. “I’m Sandra from 12th grade, remember me? We used to date a while ago!”
‘No, I don’t remember you, and what’s with the stupid nickname you gave me?!’ Felix was annoyed. “Of course I remember you, long time no see Sandra…” He outwardly put up an act.
“It’s good you remember! Well, Lexi… I heard you were going to be in a big movie this year, so I wanted to congratulate you for it!” Sandra said with her boisterous attitude, her voice seemed to ring loudly in the other person’s ears.
‘News travels fast… they’ve probably already announced the cast on their site… or maybe it was leaked?’ Felix wondered, more than anything it was strange that a classmate from so long ago would still remember his name. “Thank you, I wasn’t expecting this but it’s good to hear from you.” He said while pretending not to be irritated by the woman he was speaking to.
“So, would you like to go out on a date with me? I’ll buy you something great!” Sandra suggested, her tone no less cherry than moments ago. It was like the woman had drank several cups of coffee right before starting the call.
‘Why on earth would I want to go out with you? Or did you freaking forget you bullied me all throughout high school for being quiet? Oh how convenient it is to forget such things when it doesn’t fit your agenda!’ Felix thought to himself as he clenched his teeth. Not only was one of his high school bullies getting in touch with him out of nowhere but she also had the audacity to pretend like nothing happened between them.
In truth Sandra and Felix never dated in the first place, the woman had made that up on the spot as if the other wouldn’t remember things that happened nearly 7 years ago…
