GAIA POV
It’s been a day since I received bone-chilling news. A day still waiting for someone to burst through the door and yell “It’s a prank!” a long freaking day since I tried with every fiber of my being to stomach the thought of me being a mate to Zeus. I tried to find the reason why the moon goddess would give me Zeus as a mate. I had everything to be grateful for, and this was not one of them. It was a total curse. I gave out a defeated sigh and turned to my back, then stared at the ceiling, without actually seeing anything.
Silvanus rustled at the back of my mind, calling for me. I mind-linked her and asked her:
“What”
‘I think you should stop worrying yourself about this. If Zeus is your mate, then there’s nothing we can do break the mate-bond. Although we are blessed by Moon Goddess, and you are the Goddess of Nature, other things are not in our control. You can control rain, but you cannot control the mate bond!’ then she huffed and turned her head.
“I’m truly puzzled at how calm you are; although it’s Zeus we are talking about here. Need I remind you? WE ARE MATED TO ZEUS!” I emphasized on the name so that it drives home expeditiously. How in the universe was he so calm and reserved while I was totally freaking out of my own skin? It was Zeus of Kratos Pack we were talking about here. The man I’ve spent years trying and trying non-stop to find some piece of news on him. Anything about him. Be it a picture or just a piece of scripture that can give me a clue of who was he. And in return, I found nothing. Absolutely nothing.
‘Remember last night when I told you that there is more to come?’ she asked catching my attention.
“You psychic! What is it that you are hiding from me?” I asked clearly intrigued.
‘Nothing really. But like I said, there’s more to things than we actually see. This is just the beginning.’ I let her words sink in. and as soon as they hit home, I felt like I was punched in the gut. I envisioned how my life in Kratos Pack would be like. Would I be kept in the dungeons like prisoners and eat leftovers tossed through the bars? Would I be told to scrub floors and work as a slave? Or would Zeus let me sit beside him on his throne? If it’s the latter, how would I find myself around him? The only question that still puzzled me was what kind of a creature was he? A half-vampire half-werewolf? Would he want to feed on me and turn me into his blood pet? I tried to imagine of the world where Zeus was someone like Dyaus. A man with a very handsome face and the most alluring red eyes. A man with dark hair framing his perfect his perfect face. We would go to morning runs in the woods and play around. We would train with his soldiers and I would introduce some of the war tactics from the Jukon Pack, then retreat to our bedroom where we would make love till sunrise. In no time, I would get pregnant and then give birth to a beautiful pup. We would merge the two packs into one and make a big pack full of harmony and prosperity. We would be untouchable and the strongest pack in history.
However, Dyaus was no Zeus and they definitely didn’t belong to the same criteria. Although Dyaus was arrogant and brood, he had a lovely sense of humor and boy; the bastard was the sexiest beast of all the time. Additionally, there was just something about him that melted my lady bits to the core. And then there’s Zeus. He might come out as an old freak with a bald head and drool dripping down his mouth. Or a giant with a body decorated by scars from battles he fought. Or even worse, the devil himself with a lot of evil in his eyes. I just didn’t know what to do with my life. I felt like I reached a point where I was helpless, with no plan of the future. And the Goddess knew that I hated being without a plan. A strategy. Something to hold on to. On top of that, Silvanus was speaking rattles like some sort of a Vargamor attacked by the unseen. But deep within me I knew she was right. There was a whole new world waiting for me out there and I just had to put on my big girl’s panties and face it.
“Princess Gaia!” Melina’s soft voice interrupted me from my unruly thoughts that nagged me. I woke up and settled in a sitting position with my back against the giant oak headboard. She came in pulling a trolley packed of food. My stomach crumbled from the sight of a full course.
“Ah. My favorite lady carrying my favorite thing in the world. Food!” I remarked playfully at her. She chuckled and pushed the trolled to the mini dining area that sat by the couches on the far left of the room.
“Please wash up while I set up the table for you Princess. You’ve slept through the morning to noon so I thought you would have a larger meal!” she explained already unpacking a three shelved trolley full of food. My mouth salivated while I summoned all the strength in my body to do as she asked. I hurried to the bathroom and washed my face, then brushed my teeth. Wasting no time, I rushed back to the bedroom where I found her slouched to a single couch reading a magazine. As a personal amid, she was allowed to use stuff in my room as long as they didn’t leave the room without my consent. I sat by the table and began my attack with us sitting in a comfortable silence. After a good minute, she broke the ice.
“I had about it. Your story with Alpha Zeus!” she said slowly. Careful not to press the wrong button and send me over the edge.
“Yeah. The irony of it. I mean, I don’t even know how my “mate” looks like!” I said shoving a spoon of food into my mouth. She chuckled mildly.
“Do looks really matter?” she asked placing the magazine on her lap and giving me her undivided attention.
“Of course they do. Dah! I am the Child of Heavens my dear Melina. It goes without saying that my mate should be the most handsomest.” I said with humor dripping from my tone. She gave out a full belly laugh and nodded her head repeatedly in agreement.
“That I will not argue with. But I really think Zeus is likable. Call it an intuition. Besides, vampires do have good looks; so they say!” she said pointing a finger at me in emphasis.
“You sound just like Silvanus and Hermes. Somehow you people have this kind of a picture of a cool looking guy with acceptable features. Well, I don’t. In my mind, Zeus is a freak with long teeth that are not set. He’s…” I ended my words with a shudder. That had her laughing out louder. I finished my food with us talking about things that might happen in Kratos Pack. How my life would be. We ended up creating this little picture of Kratos being secluded on a mountain top. With the sea surrounding the mountain. I nearly knocked off my food from laughter when we talked about Zeus. It was just funny of how we imagined him.
Melina helped me to my shower after eating and had me dresses in fresh clothes. I left her in my room with a group of other maids who came to clean and went to my mother’s chambers. Her chambers were divided into numerous rooms that had almost everything she needs throughout the day. There was an office where she held important meetings, a studio where she spent time creating, sewing. Even a mini library that was stocked with my lots and lots of books of legends. And a mini bar which she used for her luncheons with her wolf friends. Although she lived a life of a housewife, my mother was an important member of The Council because of her nature. An Alpha. She was also an important member of my father’s committee and both of them had the final say in the matters of the pack. She was the perfect example of a true Luna. She was loving, and kind. I loved her with everything in me. And the fact that I was about to leave her made me weak in the knees. There was no guarantee that we would meet again once I was in Zeus’s grasp.
I pushed the door to her office open and found her seated behind her huge mahogany office desk typing on her computer. Her eyes rose and landed on me. A sad smile formed on her lips as she stood up to welcome. Upon reaching her, she engulfed me into a big long hug and rocked me from side to side. The embrace was comforting. I circled my arms around her waist and buried my face into her neck.
“My beautiful baby girl. Mother loves you so much. No matter what happens in the future.” We untangled from each other’s embrace and had her kiss my cheeks. I plastered a small smile to show her that I was okay.
“I know mother. And I love you just as much.” She pulled my hand and guided me to the couch. She sat down and had me sleeping on my side with my head on her lap. Her fingers running slowly and soothingly through my hair.
“Are you ready? To be taken by him anytime? He can arrive at any moment of the day and just… take you away from me. From us. Are you ready for that?” she asked a very low voice. I took a moment to think of my reply.
“To be honest, I am not. It’s the anticipation that kills me the most. I don’t know when he will arrive to take me. I’m walking on eggshells and living beside myself, afraid of my own shadow because I just keep thinking about him. I hate it so much mother.” I said frankly. She didn’t respond. Just threaded her fingers into my hair and massaged me deeply. We let silence cocoon us and let our minds wonder. My wolf was calm, as usual, and I could sense that hers was wreaking havoc in her mind. She was just doing what any mother should do in difficult situation; staying strong for her child! Her strength calmed me down. Unsaid words settled around us. Fear hung heavy in the air. It was really nerve wrecking to try to decipher Zeus’s intentions. We were trying really hard to make sense into his…doings. But it was utterly improbable. He was so unpredictable that we couldn’t even try to guess his next step.
“You are the strongest Alpha I know Gaia. Your father’s strength and mine are bundled together in you. And there’s nothing in this world that can defeat you. Nothing including Zeus. Do not fear him. Face him head on. Challenge him. Let him know that nothing can take you down. He should respect you.” She said with a very confident voice. I opened my eyes and halted my breathing for a second to let her words hit home.
“You think so mother?” I asked uncertainty evident in my tone. She brushed my cheek with her thumb and smiled.
“I know so!”
I gave a shaky breath before nodding. She was right. I had to be positive for whatever came next. Be it the mysterious Zeus and his unpredictable ways; I was going to come out on top!
