FREYA
I woke up with a start, cold sweat dripping from my forehead as I breathed heavily. It was another nightmare, the second one that night.
Icarus’ red glowing eyes haunted me and his sharp teeth dripping with blood made me shiver in fright.
It was still a wonder how I was able to get through that night of the attack. It had to be pure adrenaline, because the mere thought of my experience that night made my blood run cold.
Feral wolves were an ugly sight, and to see Icarus cause so much harm and kill so many people, it increased my desire to end him. He was too dangerous to live.
A knock interrupted my thoughts and I was too tired to walk over and check who it was, so I asked whoever it was to come in.
“Good morning, Miss Freya.” Ava greeted, a huge smile on her face. She was carrying a tray of food, water and medicine, placing them on the bed as I sat up.
“Woah, it is so early in the morning and I already get breakfast in bed? What is the special occasion?” I chuckled, balancing the meal properly on my thighs. It was a meal of toast and creamy oatmeal with fruits.
“Your well being is a special occasion, Ma'am. At least that is what the master says. He gave the order to bring in breakfast on time and to give you these medications after all you went through last night.” Ava said, her eyes softening as she stood at the foot of my bed.
“I bet the whole town is aware of the incident already…aren't they?” I sighed.
“Not really…” Ava replied. “But we definitely are tightening up our fortresses. Because of the damage caused, we fear an imminent attack by the humans and we have to be prepared when that happens.”
I stuffed my mouth with toast, nodding after Ava's terrifying speculations. Apparently, I had proved my point, but at the expense of the safety of this clan.
I did not really mean to jeopardise their safety, but my plan still stood. I was going to find out his Achilles heel, and that shall be his doom.
I still needed more information for me to have a better working plan, and from the looks of it, Ava was willing to divulge as much information as she could about her people. I could not let such a golden opportunity pass.
“So Ava…” I said, taking a sip of water.
“You know a number about wolferian history, right?”
“Uhhh, I know a thing or two…” Ava responded, rather disappointingly.
“Hmmm…” I hummed, rubbing my chin. “Since I lost a huge chunk of my memory, everything in my head has been quite hazy…” I scratched my head awkwardly. “...But I just want to be reminded about your kind... Immortal wolves, I mean.”
Ava's ears perked up, and she seemed on guard like I had spoken about a touchy subject, so I quickly chipped in.
“I was taught a number, but the memory of those lessons are long gone and I just needed your help in remembering, that is all…” I began, sobering up. “I would not want to make the same mistake I made in the past.”
“I will try to help in the best way I can.” Ava said with a reassuring smile as she sat at the edge of my bed. “So... what do you want to know?”
“While growing up, I was taught about different plants that could have different effects on our wolves. Are those different for Immortals or immortal Alphas?” I asked, waiting patiently for Ava to answer my question.
“Phew, that is a tough one.” Ava chuckled. “I can't say for Alphas, but I do not think there is much of a difference with Immortals. They pretty much get affected by the same things as other wolves.”
“Oh... wow…” I nod my head in comprehension. “Can you remind me of some of those things?”
“Well, there are several...we have Wolfsbane, Feral bloom, Dingleberries, and a few others I can't remember at the moment.” Ava seemed to really rack her head for this information. “But if you want more information on them, you could check out the library downstairs. It is the third room by your left down the hallway.”
“Oh, great. I should definitely do that.” I said in agreement. “That would be all, Ava. Thank you.”
“Thank you, miss.” Ava bowed, retrieving the tray from my thighs before exiting the room with it.
As the door slammed shut, I smiled to myself.
“It is time to hit the library, Freya.”
***
When Ava had mentioned a library, nothing had prepared me for a gigantic room filled with books that looked like they were as old as time itself.
“Woah, look at this place!” My voice echoed round the room. There were shelves after shelves of books and I could not wait to dig into the pile.
But that was the exact problem. Where was I to start in this world of books? How would I find the perfect book that would give me what I wanted?
“Hello, Miss. Can I help you with something?”
The voice startled me a little and I turned to see an old woman with long, white hair and a pair of spectacles sitting on her nose. She was seated at a desk and it was easy to know that she was the Librarian.
“O-oh hi...I uh, I am looking for a book on...wolves.” I said to her and she chuckled, revealing some missing teeth.
“There are many genres of books on wolves, girl. It might be a tough choice, but I hope you find what you are looking for.”
“Me too...thank you so much!” I said to her as I walked through the aisles, my eyes perusing the covers of the books.
A particular book caught my eye. There was nothing physically striking about it, but the title made me a little more interested.
“Wolf Myths... and Legends…” I muttered, running my hands over the spines.
“This looks promising…” I retrieved it from the shelf, flipping through the pages hungrily in search of information.
I skipped through the pages that had the myths, headed right to the legends. I needed facts, not fables. Every page drew me deeper and closer into what I wanted, and I could not wait till I found a chair before I dug deeper.
I read about the blue moon, which was the weakest time for every wolf because they were always rendered powerless. Unfortunately, the blue moon had not appeared in hundreds of years, so I could not bank on that.
I flipped the pages as I walked, and a particular plant caught my eyes.
“The moonbell…” I muttered, running my hand over the picture of the flower.
It was a dreamy blue flower in the shape of a bell, and I found it even more fascinating when I started to read its effect on wolves.
Despite its beauty, the Moonbell was a very deadly plant and it was so deadly that barely touching it could get a wolf poisoned and ingesting it could literally kill any wolf.
My eyes grew wide as I stared at the strange flower, keeping the image etched in my brain.
But I had more questions. What about immortal wolves? Would the moonbell kill them as well?
I was getting closer to my answer when someone shoved me so hard that I staggered backwards, hitting the shelf next to me. The force with which I was pushed sent the book I was holding, flying from my hands.
As I crashed into the shelf, it sent a lot of books falling on the ground, leaving the book I was reading buried in a pile of identical book covers.
“Get out of my way, you stupid b***h!” An angry sonorous voice greeted my ears and I blinked severally, trying to recover as I took in the person in front of me.
It was a pale, beautiful lady with an angry scowl on her face. She was pretty tall, which made her look even more menacing.
“What the hell was that for? You do not go about shoving people out of the way like that!” I fired back, still stunned by her actions. I looked down at the pile of books scattered on the floor and frowned.
“And what are you going to do about that, huh?” She took a few steps towards me. “The Alpha is not here to save your whiny little derrière now, is he?"
“I do not know who you are, but you do not want to know what I am capable of, lady.” I narrowed my eyes at her as she towered over me.
Who was this lady and why did she hate me for no apparent reason?
“Now, I am going to ask you nicely...get out of my way.” I asked, cranking my neck to look into her fiery eyes.
“No.” She replied, shoving my shoulder with a finger. I was boiling inside, and I was so close to exploding.
“You puny little thing...you might be Luna, but you have no place here.” She looked around, shaking her head before lifting my jaw with her finger. “Tsk, tsk, I wonder what you are doing reading books in the sorcery section...Icarus would not be pleased.”
“You touch me one more time, and you will definitely regret it.”
“You smart mouthed bitch.” She shoved me even harder. “Why don't you make me?”
In a blink of an eye, my palm landed on her cheeks and it echoed really loud in the library.
Shell shocked, she stared at me, one hand massaging her cheeks with her hand as her eyes stung with tears.
Wearing a scowl on my lips, I leaned into her. “This is just a warning for you. Do not ever think about crossing me again.”
With quivering lips, she turned around, running out of the library.
“That's right. Run away.” I glanced around to see a few servants watching us, and a smirk grew on my lips.
