PROLOGUE
A CENTURY AGO. It was on the eve of Christmas 1922 that Freya Hawkins and her family met their doom. The full moon was out and shone brightly in the night sky when Freya heard the familiar howling of the angry wolves hot on their tail. Trepidation and fear clung onto her as she ran through the woods as fast as she could, panting heavily, branches from trees grasping her dress that prevented the speed she would have preferred. Ahead of her was her husband and six year old son, both of them as terrified as she was, glancing over their shoulders occasionally to check if she was still behind them. They had been quick enough to flee from their house after information about Freya being a witch got to the Alpha King. Witches and black magic were f*******n in the clan. Freya had remained there under a guise because the village of witches had been wiped out by none other than Icarus Donovan, the ruthless Alpha King. Now she had been exposed, and the Alpha King would stop at nothing to make sure Freya and her family were dead. The harsh winter cold nipped at her skin and fatigue slowly seeped in. They had been on the run for hours so she could not give up now. She had to live for her son, and her husband. An arrow shot through the air, nailing Freya’s dress to a tree. "Keep going. I will be alright," she yelled after her husband who stopped, wanting to help take out the arrow. Nodding, he hauled the younger boy into his arms and set off. She successfully tore her dress out of the arrow as another flew through, followed by a couple more. There was not a lot of them she could dodge because one in particular struck her left arm and left a stinging pain. Freya latched her right hand onto the left arm, letting out a slow hiss. She saw droplets of her blood trickle down to the white snow. If it continued like this, the Alpha King and his wolves would find her in no time using her trail of blood. And that meant bad news. Freya was too weak to heal herself with her powers. She had over exhausted her strength to the point where there was hardly anything left. Backing a tree that helped prevent more arrows from getting to her, she took a deep breath to calm her nerves, tearing out a piece of fabric from her dress. Carefully, Freya wrapped the piece of clothing over her injured arm and tied a tight knot to stop the bleeding. The arrows had stopped, but she could sense they were closer, could hear the steady growling of wolves and the fear she had been trying to put at bay doubled ten times over. "Search the area," the voice of the Alpha King boomed harshly. "Leave no corner untouched. Turn the forest upside down if you have to. Bring me Freya Hawkins and her family alive." Freya’s feet stood planted to the ground, too scared to even breathe. Wherever her husband and son were, she hoped they were safe. "I found something, Alpha," another voice said. "It is blood. They could not have gotten far." "Tell the rest to search over there. I will search this place myself." "Yes, Alpha." Footsteps trailed off but she could still feel the Alpha’s presence, slowly walking around, his ears high on alert for any unusual sound. Using the last crumbs of her strength, Freya tried to use her powers one last time, radiating a low glob of energy from her fingertips. She shut her eyes close for more concentration and then it started to slowly radiate higher, the strong force of energy pulsing through her tired body. When her eyes fluttered open again, the low glob had turned into a larger one, the energy force bursting out of her and dismantling the tree Freya had hidden behind. Before her stood Icarus Donovan the Alpha King, a winter shawl spread over his wide shoulders. He was just as intimidating as people described, his death stare matching hers, chiseled jaw locked indicating clenched teeth that might have been as a result of the cold, or his deep anger towards her. "Found you." "Tell your pack to retreat. You do not want to see what else I can destroy other than that tree." Underestimating the power of an enraged witch was something Icarus had experienced prior to this. He had witnessed what havoc witches could cause, and that was why they must be eliminated from the surface of the earth. His hate for witches ran deep ever since the first war between witches and the werewolves, his family brutally murdered in the process. Freya Hawkins and her family had to die. And it must be tonight. "It is nice to see you try," he said. "Your magic can't work on me." "Try me." A large metal connected to the back of her head before she could unleash her powers, dropping to the pile of snow that spread across the floor. Icarus’ beta dropped his weapon and carried the unconscious girl over his shoulders. "We found her husband and son." "Bring them to me." One thing he hated more than witches was betrayers. How could a werewolf get married to a witch knowing what they did to their kind? It was preposterous. Since he had chosen to side with a witch, even bearing a son in the process, the man must die along with her. Minutes later, Freya’s husband and her son were dragged in by the werewolf pack, dried tears shining on the younger boy’s face. The boy had a witch’s blood flowing through him and could be a future threat. Even if he was innocent, there would be no sparing. "P…please spare my wife and son," the man whimpered. "I am the one who betrayed the clan. Kill me instead." "You would die as requested. But because you are still one of us, I will do you a favor," Icarus smirked. "How about I kill you first so you would not have to watch your family die?" The young boy began wailing again, clinging to his father’s shirt and Icarus scowled. They always cried. He wanted to slap the silly little thing. "Stop that!" He growled at him, and the boy snapped his mouth shut. "There is no time to waste. Tie the girl to the tree," Icarus instructed, watching as his beta hurried to do as he said. "If…" Freya’s husband continued again. "If you can allow us leave town, we would never set foot here. I swear on my life." "I will take back my favor if you provoke me and kill the boy right here." Icarus grabbed the child’s hair and showcased his large claws. "Is that what you want?" "Forgive me. I spoke without thinking." Icarus retreated his claws and shoved the boy away. When Freya’s eyes fluttered open, she was tied to a tree. The strong rope sunk into her skin when she tried to move, leaving harsh pains. "The rope is laced with poison," Freya flung her head up at Icarus’ voice. "The more you move, the more poison dissolves into your skin. She returned her husband’s concerned gaze with a worried one, tears building up in her eyes. Freya willed herself not to cry in front of the enemy. It would show weakness, and she hated it. "You bastard," Freya seethed. "Let them go. It is me you want." "Funny. Your husband said something similar to that. So I offered him a favor." Icarus’ claws came back out and drove itself into Freya’s husband’s chest, pulling out his heart with a force. Freya gaped at the beating heart in horror before Icarus threw it at her feet. "I promised I would kill him first. That way, he would not have to watch any of you die." "No…" Freya murmured under her breath, finding it hard to stare at her husband’s lifeless body, or his heart a few feet away from her. "You, on the other hand, will watch every single one of them die because I despise you the most." A last drop of tear fell from the child’s eyes as a wolf pounced on his neck, tearing his head apart. It was at that moment Freya decided to let a tear of her own slip down her face, her heart breaking into a million pieces. Her son’s blood dripped from the wolf’s fangs as it growled at her, ready to pounce on her next. "Patience, you," Icarus scolded the wolf. "What fun is there if we kill her off too soon?" Bringing out its tongue to lick off the blood on its fangs, the wolf took a step back. Freya’s gaze went back to Icarus’ one more time, his eyes reflecting nothing but emptiness, his devilishly good looking face showing no emotion. He had taken away everything that made her happy, and she would never forgive him for it. Even if she died tonight, she would plead to her ancestors to bring her back to life for the sole purpose of revenge. Her late mother who had also died by Icarus’ pack would be waiting for her on the other side and bring her back to life. No matter how long it took. No matter what it costed. Freya was a descendant of one of the most powerful line of witches. Coming back to life would be more than possible. This bastard before her would never see it coming. "Just get on with it if you are going to kill me," she said. "Why? In a hurry to go meet your husband on the other side? I am sure he would be pleased to see you." He signaled to his beta who appeared by his side immediately. "Get me the torches. This witch seems to be in a haste to die." His beta snatched a torch from a pack member’s grip, handing it over to the Alpha. "Here." Collecting it, he turned back to Freya. "Are there any more of you out there in hiding I should know about?" "You are retarded if you think I will tell you." Icarus shrugged. "I Will find them just like I found you." Stepping closer to Freya, he stretched the ball of fire from the stick forward. "Any last words?" A corner of her lips perked up slightly. "I will be back." Then she was set ablaze, Icarus’ face being the last thing she saw as the fire completely consumed her whole.
