CHAPTER 13: FERAL

2086 Words
FREYA "It is feral bloom!" I exclaimed, earning myself some nasty looks from some persons around me but I did not care. I had just found one of the rarest plants in the wolf realm! It was rare because of the effect it had on wolves. If a werewolf sniffed its pollen, it immediately made his wolf turn feral, absolutely uncontrollable and wild during that period until the effect wore off. Icarus said we were going to be safe here, didn't he? That nothing could possibly make him transform unless it was a full moon... A devious smile bloomed on my lips. Well, we will see about that. I tucked the flower behind my ears, locating the toilet soon afterwards. After easing myself, I remained in the stall for a little while, looking at the flower. I could not just hand it over to him. He would know from a mile away that it was feral bloom. He would not let me go any inch closer to him with this thing. I had to think of a way to present it to him without him knowing what it was. At that moment, an idea popped into my head. My spells could not work on Icarus, right? But they could work on things around him! A devious smile formed on my lips as I whispered a concealing spell. Maskeren, ne daj im da vide! The feral bloom slowly morphed into a different flower and my smile grew into a devilish grin. Time to teach Icarus a lesson. *** Immediately I stepped out of the bathroom, I spotted Icarus in the midst of the crowd, looking around, obviously for me. At that moment, he turned in my direction and his expression of worry morphed into a frown. "There you are. Where have you been? I have been waiting forever for you." Icarus’ sour expression deepened as I walked over to him. "I am sorry. I was not able to locate the bathroom in time." I said. "Where did you get that flower from?" Icarus asked, face scrunched up in scrutiny. "Oh, a little girl approached me with this strange, beautiful flower. Can you identify it by giving it a sniff?" I asked Icarus, retrieving it from my hair before handing it over to him. "Hmmmm..." He hummed, eyeing the flower suspiciously. "I do not think we should go around sniffing strange flowers, Freya." "Why not?" I asked. "How can we truly appreciate its unique scent if we don't?" "How sure are you that it even smells good?" Icarus asked me, brow raised. "Well, that is why I brought it to you first. If you like it, then I guess it is good." I shrugged in response. "So what, I am the lab rat?" Icarus asked in amusement. "What if it is poisonous?" I could feel Icarus' suspicion grow, so I had to find a way to allay it. "Well, you did say we were safe here." I replied. "I do not think anyone would try to sabotage us, or poison us here. Or do you have enemies in the human world as well?" "Not really... There has been no reason for us to go to war against each other. " Said Icarus. "Still, we can never be too careful. They could even cause us harm unknowingly." Why did he have to be so critical and analytical? "Fine." I replied, snatching it from his hands. "I will just toss it in the trash." I stormed off in feigned anger, but I had barely taken two steps when he pulled my arm back, gently taking the flower from my hand. "Hey, you know it is not about you, right? I just want us to be careful when relating with people around here. Not everyone is on our side like we think." Icarus advised, and I nodded. He had no idea how much he was living in the reality of his own words. He was beginning to trust me, but he had no idea that I was the last person he should trust. His worst nightmare. "So...what flower could this be..." He said, taking a deep sniff with his eyes closed. A few moments later, his eyes shot open, gleaming red. "Freya..." He groaned. "What flower is this?" "I-I do not know." I replied, my voice breaking as I looked at him wide eyed. "What is wrong? You do not look so good." He looked at the flower again and his eyes widened. At that moment, the spell faded and he saw the flower for what it really was. But it was already too late. My mission had already been accomplished. "Feral bloom...no!" Icarus tossed it away, staggering backwards. Icarus grabbed my hand, dragging me along as he broke into a run. "We have to get out of here now!" He growled, his voice already changing. "What is going on?" I asked, my heart pounding in my chest. I had never seen a feral wolf, but I had seen angry wolves and they are not exactly the friendliest. What have I done? "Almost...there..." He growled out, but his bones were already morphing. "Icarus!" I called out, but his human ears had already been replaced with that of a wolf. "Find...Maurice..." He whispered before crashing on the ground in pain as his bones turned into that of a wolf. His transformation was already attracting a crowd, and some took to their heels while some others watched him from a distance and recorded with their phones. Icarus, fully transformed, stood gigantic on all fours before releasing a chilling howl. The park's security had already surrounded him. I watched them a little distance out of sight, and he was magnificent. This was the first time I was seeing his wolf, and I had to admit, I was terrified. His glowing red eyes zeroed on the security men and his thick black fur shone under the twilight. He lifted his sharp claws that could slice through the toughest skin, hitting the security men down before racing out of the park. I quickly ran to Maurice who watched in shock as the Alpha leaped over his car. "H-how? What happened?" He asked, stunned. "Just drive! Follow after him!" I commanded, jumping into the other side of the front seat. Maurice nodded, turning on the car and racing after Icarus immediately. Icarus was really fast, but he was easy to find. He struck down any person or thing standing in his way and my blood ran cold as I looked at the bodies strewn on the ground and the wrecked structures as we drove past. This was my fault. "Attention! Attention! There is a wolf on the loose! Stay indoors and if you see it, stay out of Its way!" A loud voice echoed from a helicopter already flying around the city. As we drove into the woods after him, we noticed the woods were surrounded and some heavily armed men were already hot on his heels. Maybe I will not have to kill Icarus after all. This could be how he dies. Even though I would have a hand in it, his blood would not directly be on my hands. I knew for sure that humans had a thing for prying creatures open. Let’s see if an immortal Alpha could survive that. But for now I had to play along and keep searching for him. Hopefully he would have been shot down before we found him. If that happened, then my mission here would be completed. Maurice drove on and so did the helicopters and armed men. The deeper we drove, the more wrecked cars and battered humans we encountered. "This is bad... really bad..." I muttered, but I noticed Maurice slowing down. "What are you doing, Maurice?" I yelled at him, but he remained sullen, turning off the ignition. "What is your problem? We are supposed to be going after him so we can rescue him." I scolded him in rage. "I am sorry, Miss. But we can't go any further. He is feral, and I am scared that he would rip us apart if we get too close." Maurice confessed. "And I can't let you go alone. Master would rip my head off if I let any harm come to you." I grew quiet, sinking into my chair. He made a valid point, but our soul ties kept tugging at me, urging me to get out of the car and search for him. I fought the urge, but the harder I fought it, the stronger it pulled me. Like a moth to a lethal flame. I growled, jumping out of the car. I ignored Maurice's screams for me to come back. I ran deep into the night, letting the glittering stars guide me. As I ran, I listened for his howl and the sounds of the humans as they chased after him. I followed them a safe distance behind, but as I drew closer to them, I stepped on a twig and it snapped under my feet, alerting them. "Did you hear that?" They asked themselves. "Who is there?" An angry voice called out. "I-It is me..." I came out of hiding, hands in the air. I knew If i had not, I would have been shot. "What are you doing here all alone? Did you not hear there is a wolf on the loose?" The officer who spoke earlier, asked me. "I... I have been in the woods all evening, picking herbal roots for medicine." I said, hugging my purse tight. "Well, we have got to get you out of here." The man replied. "Liz, take her to the car and drive her home." Liz, one of the police officers, beckoned on me and I hesitantly followed after her. We had barely gotten to the car when Icarus appeared, eyes glowing red and teeth bared, dripping with blood. They raised their guns to shoot but Icarus was faster than them, ripping out their heads, their hearts, and tearing them apart in a blink. Their weapons didn’t stand a chance. "Go! Run!" I told Liz, but she shoved me aside, aiming at Icarus with her g*n. She pulled the trigger but missed, barely grazing his skin. Icarus snapped his head towards her and before she could turn to run, he bit her head off, tossing her body aside. My heart dropped to my stomach as chills ran down my spin in fear. Icarus approached me, growling, and I shook on my feet. However, as he stood furiously before me, he sniffed the air and something seemed to have relaxed in him. A soothing whine replaced his growls and the red glint to his eyes slowly faded, but as his wolf was about to seat docilely before my shivering form, it happened. "Stand back! Stay away from the woman!" The voice called out from the helicopter as it drew closer below. In a blink, Icarus rose, eyes darkening once again and he had climbed a large tree, jumping on the helicopter. He shattered the glass, tossing the pilot out of the window. Several gunshots rang through the air but Icarus was quick to drive the helicopter into a tree before he was shot at. My jaw dropped, heart thudding. As he fell on the ground, I wanted to run towards him, my chest constricting at his vulnerability, but I stood transfixed on my feet, overwhelmed with fear. He slowly morphed back into a human and I turned my face away at his nakedness, running over to a wrecked car to see if I could find a towel or blanket. I eventually did, tossing it over to him while keeping a safe distance. "Freya…" Icarus whispered out, his eyes barely focused. "Stay away from me..." I breathed out, taking steps back as he staggered towards me. "Freya, I don’t know how this happened..." "Let us just...find Maurice and go home." I muttered, walking in the direction I came from. The sound of a speeding car drew our attention and Maurice soon drove to a stop in front of us. "We have to leave now. They have sent for reinforcement!" Icarus quickly got into the backseat so he could lie low while I got into the front seat next to Maurice. As we drove on in silence, my mind reeled with memories of that terrible night, the chase of those ferocious wolves, their chilling howls and how they matched Icarus’. I shivered, wishing it could all disappear.
