CHAPTER 3: SAVIOR

2559 Words
Nick tried to get out of bed yet again but he could not, his entire body had been in pain and no amount of medication was making things better. It’s been a little over a month since the operation and he did not regret doing and he would go back and do it all over again. He switched on his TV and changed the channel to news and he saw just what he wanted to see, Amber the daughter of the famous business man was being discharged from hospital but there was one thing on everyone’s lips and it was who was the mystery donor? Nick smiled, that’s was exactly what he had wanted. He saved Ambers life not for the recognition that he was going to receive but he knew that her life was worth living. He remembered how he felt when he had gotten to the hospital and the horrors of finding out that she was literally at deaths door. “Somebody help, please help!” Nick yelled as he carried Amber through the doors of the hospital. The hospital was packed and it seemed like every doctor was occupied and every nurse was tending to another crisis. Nick could not even feel the tears running down his face because he was so soaked from the rain outside. He looked down at Amber’s face, she too was soaked, and worst of all her face was pale. He looked around the busy hospital and once more and honestly Nick did not care what other casualties the hospital had but he was definitely going to make sure that Amber got the treatment she deserved. Nick ran through the hall of the hospital, Amber still in his arms. He ran towards the reception desk and yelled at the nurse whom was frantically searching through some documents. “Get me the doctor!” the nurse looked up from the documents and her eyes widened when she saw who it was that Nick was carrying in his arms, Amber’s father had built the hospital that they were currently in. The nurse picked up the phone and dialed a number and within seconds a doctor and a nurse arrived loading Amber onto a bed and taking her to the emergency room. Just when Nick thought that his troubles were over the surgeon had come up to meet him in the waiting room and his facial expression was not one that Nick associated with good news. He tried to call Amber’s parents but all signals were down and Nick knew just what to do at that moment. The surgeon had just told him that Amber was dying and he knew just what to do. “I’ll do it” he told the doctor, not hesitating. “Are you sure of what you’re saying?” the surgeon asked Nick and Nick nodded at the doctor in agreement. Never had Nick thought that he would be giving up one of his kidney for someone who he did not know in a blink of an eye. Within a few hours Nick had undergone through various tests and blood tests and he was being wheeled through the operation theatre. Bright lights switched on, blinding his eyes, needles pierced into his skin, and finally an oxygen mask placed over his mouth and nose. “Nick I want you to count till ten for me okay?” the doctor asked him and Nick nodded his head. “One, Two, Three—Four—fiv—five” Nick could not remember what happened after that, all he knew what that he woke up in a white room with the very same needles and heavy machinery attached to him. Even though he felt weak and his lips felt heavy, the good news was that the doctor had told him that Amber was fine and she was recovering.   Even as Nick lay in his bed he could still remember the joy that he felt when the doctor had uttered those words to him but now Nick had bigger things to worry about and that was his grumpy old neighbor that wanted to take Nick’s farm from him. Nick felt bad that he did not even tell his mother and sister that he had had a major operation a month earlier, he could not stand the thought of his sister leaving her education to tend to him and his mother leaving one of her countless lovers or drugs to make a life difficult for him. At first Nick could never understand why his grandfather had willed the farm to him and the some to his sister but know Nick understood why he did that, his mother was not stable enough to care for such a huge responsibility and her drug habit was getting worse with age to the point where Nick could not deal. “You bastard, get out here!” Nick did not have to look out the window or even step outside to see who it was because he would know that voice from pretty much anywhere. Whatever it was he knew that it was bound to cause trouble for him the moment he would step out of his house. He heard Farmer Wilson yell out his name for what felt like the millionth time, but Nick was no going to allow him ruin his day, added to that the pain throughout his whole body. Nick took out his phone and placed his ear phones in his ears, he made up his mind that she was going to listen to music and ignore the old man. Nick was awakened by a loud bang on his door and although he was in pain he still stood up from his bed and walked towards his door. Nick was in shock to find that the Sherriff was standing on his front porch. He unlocked the door and he was now face to face with the Sherriff who he did know the reason of his visit. “Good afternoon Sherriff and how may I help you?” Nick asked him, holding his one hand on his back to avoid the pain shooting through his body. Unlucky for him, the Sherriff noticed that he was hiding the fact that he was in pain. “Good evening Nick. Are you okay?” The Sherriff asked him but Nick was adamant that he was okay. “I’m okay Sherriff” he responded calmly. “Okay. I just came because your next door neighbor called us and complained that you vandalized his property last night” Nick rolled his eyes, he knew that Farmer Wilson had the amazing gift of sinking to the lowest point ever, but he never knew that he could sink that low. “That’s impossible” he told the Sherriff without even hesitating one bit. Nick knew himself and he knew he was not one to do such things. Many people might question his upbringing, his mother was a drug addict who jumped from man to man but his grandfather’s good heart, and strict upbringing is what saved him from following in the same footsteps that his mother did. “And what evidence do you have that would state that you were not responsible for this vandalism?” Nick knew that he had to tell the Sherriff the truth even though it meant that he would have to reveal what had really happened. “That’s impossible, because I had an operation a little over a month ago and I’m not on the all clear to go out.  And as you can see, I still have my bandages around my waist” Nick lifted up his shirt and displayed his bandages. The Sherriff seemed satisfied but for Nick it was not a victory, because he knew that it would mean that the entire town will know that he is recovering from an operation. For a man like himself who was a private man, that was not a good thing. The Sherriff said his goodbyes and left Nick’s property. Nick breath out a sigh of relief, no the only thing he had to worry about was what lie he was going to tell everyone and anyone who asked him about his operation.   ** Two weeks later Amber had had enough, it had been four hours since she had been either sitting on the computer or talking to the doctor, trying to find out who her donor was. She ended the call saying a pleasant ‘thank you’ but in her mind she was in no way thankful. She could not understand why her donor had asked not to be named and the hospital had some stupid rule about patient confidentiality. Amber felt like giving up at that point but something in her pushed her not to give up, she knew that someone that would have done that to her without wanting anything from her had to be special. She felt a pain in her heart and that’s when she realized that she was missing Steven yet again. His is what he had wanted for her. He wanted her to have a new kidney and their dream was finally come true but the sad part was that Steven was not here to share this dream with her. But now she had a kidney, a part of someone she did not know and she was sure that she has never met before. There was a knock on her door and when she turned around to face the door and see whom it was, her mother walked into her room. Amber wiped her tears away, but she could still feel the burning in her eyes. Her mother did not help the situation, because her face saddened as she saw Amber in pain. “Hey mother, I thought you were out somewhere” she told her mother, trying to sway her mother’s attention away from her own sadness. “Well I thought that is should stay home with my sick daughter” Amber rolled her eyes, she hated when her mother called her sick. It had been a little more than a month and a half since the operation and she felt that she was feeling better. “Mother I’m okay. I can take care of myself” she pressed on, reassuring her mother who did not seem convinced at all. “Did you take your meds?” Her mother asked and her and it hit Amber that’s eh did not take any of her meds. Yes she wanted to be healthier and keep her body from rejecting her new kidney but the thought of taking all those meds given to her by the doctor was too much for her. For all this time that she had been discharged from the hospital taking all those pills has been all that she could do. She was not allowed to take any alcohol or stress herself and the list of rules seemed endless and the worst part was that she missed working on her designs. “No I did not but I was thinking about it” she could see from her mother’s face that that was not a pleasing answer. “Amber you need to take your health more seriously. I know that you are going through a lot and the death of Steven is making matters worse” her mother mentioning Steven’s death did not help matters, just when she thought that she could put matters behind her , her mother had to bring Steven up. Steven was dead, leaving her behind. Although the two of them were never officially an item, but deep down she still loved him and she missed the memories that they both shared. On the outside Steven was a rough man but only she knew who he really was. He was the man that had showed her his softer side, he was adamant on getting her a kidney no matter the cost and he was also the man that took all the negative labels that were stuck onto, and he did not object to it. On his funeral no one was there for him, except Amber, his lawyer and the priest that stayed throughout his funeral through to the burial. Steven’s family had rejected him, even in death but she was there. The only thing left was for her to find out who killed Steven. “Amber!” she jumped up as her mother called out to her, she had been recalling the days that she had last spent with Steven and although they were bitter, they were sweet as well. “Yes mother” she answered her mother, acting as though she was not hurt but in her mind she could still remember when Steven was being wheeled into the theatre room. Right before they took him to the operation theatre he looked in her eyes and mouthed ‘I’m sorry’. That sorry still rang in her ears till this day. She had a strange feeling that she had to read the letter that was left for her by Steven but every time she looked at the envelope, she put it away for fears of what she might read, because she believed that nothing he could have written could have helped her deal with the pain of losing him. “I think you need some therapy” her mother suggested and that was something that she did not want, because that would mean that she had to discuss her feelings and she would much prefer to keep it inside her heart. Some might say that she was being selfish and she was hurting herself but she thought of it as a way to keep Steven’s memories alive and between the both of them. “Mother I’m fine and I don’t need to any therapy, all I need is to relax a little and recover” she told her mother and she tried her best to seem calm. Amber was once afraid of telling her family the truth about her illness for the fear that they would worry about her and now she was going to do her best to make sure that they did not worry at all. “If you think you are okay, then I will have to believe you but let me warn you that if I feel that you are not coping then I’ll admit you to the nearest hospital for therapy” her mother warned her but Amber decided to laugh it off. She watched as her mother walked out of her room, closing the door behind herself. Amber breath a sigh of relief, because she knew how serious her mother can be when it came to her and her siblings health. All she had to do was cope well enough and not break down otherwise she would never find the time to find out who her donor was. Amber knew that she was running out of time and she had to find this donor fast.
