Viola ran after her mother who was walking down the hallway to Amber’s room at the speed of light so much that she could not keep up. Tate, herself and baby Ariel had just arrived from their home after driving to New York back and forth for the past month, hoping that Amber was going to recover and finally her sister did.
“Mother comes back, please!” Viola called out to her mother, who was still not listening to her and Viola could see that she was disturbing the peace of the hospital floor that her sister was on. Viola caught up to her mother and held her by her arm, so much that her mother turned to face her. Her mother’s eyes were swallowed and bloodshot red, her mother had been crying since the call had come through that Amber was finally awake.
She knew how heartbroken her mother was to learn at the last minute that Amber was dying due to her kidney failure and that she needed a donor in the next few days otherwise she would die. Her mother had blamed herself that she could not see the signs, honestly no one could have known about her illness.
“I just want—I just want to see my daughter” her mother told Viola in a broken voice, a whisper.
She felt for her mother and Viola could not for the life of her imagine what she would feel like if something bad had ever happened to her daughter Ariel.
“Mother we will see Amber now, we will see Amber soon” Viola assured her mother whose muscles relaxed in Viola’s hand. She held her mothers’ hands and walked her towards Amber’s room. The moment before they unlocked the door was the scariest because they did not know what to expect. For the past month every time that they had unlocked the door Amber just laid there, silent and dead to the world.
They unlocked the door and there Amber was, sitting on her bed, her attention focused on the TV screen. Viola’s feet were glued to the ground, not wanting to move but it could not. Viola heard her mother’s cry from behind her and her sister Amber turned her attention from the TV to them, Amber’s eyes too filled up in tears.
Viola’s mother rushed passed Viola and landed right into Ambers arms and the two held each other tightly, not wanting to let go of each other for another minuet more. Seeing her sister had reminded her of the day that she had found out about her sisters accident.
Viola had sat down on the terrace of their hotel in Fiji overlooking the beautiful ocean. For the past three days she and Tate had been enjoying their honeymoon without any interruptions, meaning that they rid themselves of all technology such as their phones or laptops and it was just the two of them enjoying each other’s company. Even though she was enjoying her time with her husband she still missed their daughter and she desperately wanted to hear from her.
She felt a kiss on her neck, which tickled her and she knew that it was from non-other than Tate who could make her feel that good. For the past three days Tate had been showing her how much he loved her both physically and mentally and she missed that.
Tate came over and placed her cup off orange juice onto the small coffee table in front of her and he sat don close to her and placed his hand over hers, looking right into her eyes.
“How’s my lovely wife this morning?” Tate asked her. She loved hearing him praise her beauty and acknowledging that she was his wife, which made her smile.
“I’m doing great and how is my lovely husband this morning?” she asked her husband with a smile on her face, she was getting used to this.
“I’m doing great. I think we should break the rules today and call home” Tate told her, which made her happy, because that meant that she could finally speak to her daughter who she had not seen ever since they had arrived in Fiji.
She smiled at her husband Tate, who retrieved his phone from his back pocket and looked at the screen. Tate’s facial expression changed from happy to downright fear as he turned his attention away from his phone and focused it on Viola.
“What happened Tate?” she asked Tate but he could not find a way to tell her what he had seen on the screen of his. After three days of bliss with his wife, Viola he knew that this was going to break her and he did not want to be the one to tell her this.
Viola stood up from her beach chair, walked towards Tate and sat down on his chair, she held his face in her hand, and she looked deep into his eyes.
“Tate, please tell me what’s wrong?” she begged him. Tate could not say a word to her, instead he handed his phone to his wife to see the messages that was displayed across the screen of his phone.
He saw the moment that Viola had broken, her facial expression changed from being worried to downright petrified. Before Tate could hold her in his embrace, she was running from their balcony and into the room. He ran after her, only to see that she was throwing all her belonging into her suite case. It looked like the honeymoon was going to be ending sooner than they had planned for it to end.
Tate walked towards his wife, held her right hand, and lightly flung her around so that she would look right into his face. Viola’s face turned red and her eyes swollen and a small movement from her caused her tears to race down from her face.
“Please Tate, don’t try to stop me” Viola begged him and for a moment he was hurt that Viola would ever think him of the type to do that to him. He might not have grown up with the perfect family structure but he would never deprive Viola of the opportunity of tending to her younger sister, who was being brought in due to an accident.
“I’m not trying to stop you in fact I think we should leave now but please just relax” Tate told her but although she nodded her head, Tate could still feel his wife’s body tense.
That afternoon they flew back to New York, only to find that Viola was not just in hospital due to an accident but she had just undergone a double kidney operation. The doctor had just told them that Amber had been on her last and if she had not gotten a donor at the time that she did, she would have been dead, with the list of a donor being so long.
Tate watched his wife drop onto the floor as she held both her hands on her chest, he could see that a million thoughts were going through her mind at that moment. Tate walked over to his wife and sat down on the floor facing her, behind him he could hear Viola’s mother crying.
He looked into his wife’s and immediately he saw that she was broken, she was the mother hen to her sister and at that moment she felt like she had let her sister Amber down.
“You could not have known that Amber was sick” Viola looked up at him and she smiled, not the happy kind but the sarcasm of that smile lingered in the air.
“I could have tried to—“
“Don’t. Please don’t even say that! There is no way that you could have known Viola. You need to stop blaming yourself for things beyond your control” Tate knew that what he was saying as true. For the time that he had known Viola, she had been concerned about everyone else and she placed everyone above herself but this time he was not going to stand for it one bit.
“Love, you were pregnant and above that the two of us were not really having the best of time. What I’m trying to say is that you could not do anything about this situation, it was Ambers decision to tell the family so that everyone could help her but she did not” Tate looked into Viola’s eyes hoping to find a ray of hope in her eyes but there was nothing, just a woman who was broken by her sisters accident.
Viola looked into Amber’s eyes and immediately the anger rose in the pit of her stomach, the sister that she had trusted had lied to her about something as serious as a kidney disease. Viola felt betrayed and let down at the same time. A million thoughts went through her head as she walked towards her sister’s bed, she did not know what to do, but she sure wanted to speak her mind out.
“How could you? She asked her sister Amber who sat on her hospital bed lost for words. Amber tried to speak but then she remembered that her voice was not strong enough to carry her words across to her sister.
Viola did it wait a moment longer, instead Viola walked out of her sisters hospital room and into the hallway. Her back against the door, hand on her chest trying to hold all the pains in.
Maybe Tate was right, there were things beyond her control and whether she liked it or she could not stop the inevitable. Viola mentally told herself.
Tate could not understand why Viola was now looking past him but when he turned around he saw why, her sister Scarlet was walking towards them. For the past month since Amber has been admitted to the hospital they had not come pass each other, Scarlet choosing only to visit once him and Viola had left the hospital premises.
Scarlet came to a stop right in front of them, her facial expression not hiding the fact that she was in no way pleased to see them.
“Oh look who we have here” she told both Tate and Viola, a smirk now appearing on her face but Tate was not going to have anymore of her abuse.
He knew that Scarlet was in no way happy about both him and Viola’s union but he was in no way going to allow Scarlet destroy their mood.
“Good afternoon Scarlet” Tate greeted Scarlet, his voice neutral, so that he would not cause a full out war with Scarlet, but also to let her know that he was not going to stand for her nonsense.
Scarlet did not hide her hatred for him one bit, she showed it in every aspect of her day. Instead of replying to his greeting she chose to roll her eyes at him, something that Tate noticed that the women of the Albertson family did quite often.
“What are you people doing here?” she asked them with venom in her tone. Tate could not understand Scarlet, for a woman like Scarlet who dressed in a beautiful grey dress, her hair pulled up in a bun and make-up done as only a professional make-up artist would.
“Well Amber is in hospital and seeing that we are her family, we came to show her that we care” Viola responded to her sister. Tate knew that Viola was a strong woman but today he saw a different side to his wife. She was fierce and there was no ways that she was going to allow her sister push her around this time.
“Whatever” Scarlet said and she tried to walk past them but she was stopped by Viola, who held her sister’s arm and pulled her back.
“Maybe you should make a date to see your niece, you have not seen her since she was born almost two months ago” Viola felt her younger sister tense in her hand and she knew that this was a subject that Scarlet was not too comfortable with.
“Unfortunately I’m too busy, but whenever my schedule is not busy I might make a turn—Sis”
“Well you dropped out of school yet again and you are currently unemployed, what I’m saying that I’m trying to piece together what it is that you are so busy with” Tate teased at Scarlet and she was not finding it funny at all.
Scarlet turned away from her sister and turned her attention to her brother in-law now and her face reddened and just then Tate knew that he got her just where he wanted her.
“Wow Viola, I can see that you got yourself a mouth piece” she taunted her eldest sister.
“Well maybe you should get yourself a husband too. Look at it, I spend so much time trying to knock sense to you that it makes me tired therefore my husband can do that on my behalf”
Viola’s answer suited Tate quite well whilst on the other hand it infuriated Scarlet. She knew that they were right but there was no way that she would admit it to them. So she smiled, but that did not mean that she was happy about it, there was no ways that she would accept defeat.
“I’ll leave you tow lovebirds alone then” Scarlet told the both of them and she walked away and entered into Amber’s room, leaving just Tate and Viola standing in the hallway of the hospital. Tate walked up to Viola, kissed her on the lips, and smiled at her.
“I’m not a fan of sibling fighting but I’m so happy that you finally stood up to your sister and for that I’m proud of you”
Viola smiled back at her husband, she knew that Tate was right. Scarlet has been threatening her peace and she was through with her blackmailing, she was not going to allow Scarlet ruin her happiness. She had allowed her younger sister to get away with most things thus far but there was no way that she would allow it anymore.
She felt stronger now, why not? She was now a wife and a new mother, her job was to protect her family no matter the cause.
