CHAPTER 1: RECAP
Amber drove her car in the heavy storm against Nick’s warnings and now she was silently regretting it. The windscreen of her car was blurring and as much as she tried to wipe her windows it just got worse. She was seriously rethinking of going back to Viola and Nick’s Farm but there was no ways that she was allowing Nick feel victorious.
She drove further into town and the already quiet town got quieter, everyone packed away getting ready for the storm that was said to be the worst. Huge oak trees lay on the side of the road, uprooted from the ground as if it were nothing.
Amber had made up her mind that all this was not going to scar her one bit and she drove on. With every mile she drove Amber could see more devastation.
“That’s it! I’m turning back” she silently told herself, stopping her car to reverse it. She heard a noise and when she turned her head to look at the side of her window, she saw a tree falling and for that slit seconds she saw her life flash before her eyes.
One month later
Amber could not see what was going on around her but what she did know for sure was that she could her everything that was going on. From time to time she would hear the footsteps walking into her space and at times she could feel people touching her face.
She was aware of her surroundings but she could not open her eyes or move her lips to tell them that she was okay, well she was dying, but she had made peace with that.
She was in pain; her heart broke every time she would hear her mother crying besides her bed and she could not console the poor woman. She felt like crying but it was as if her body was refusing to respond to her, Amber felt hopeless.
She heard footsteps walking into her space and the sound of her mother talking to the doctor and a small part of her wanted to yell out to her mother, but he was smart enough to know that it was hopeless.
“Madam, there no need to worry because your daughter is responding well to treatment” the male voice told her mother.
She patiently awaited her mother’s response but at that moment, nothing. Her mother was silent but she touched Amber’s face. She did not even have to see that it was her mother; he already knew her mother’s warm touch.
Amber felt a warm breath on her ear and her mother mouthed something into her ears and she felt like smiling, but her face felt heavy. She was used to the feeling by now.
“Doctor I’ll trust what you are saying for now. I just want my daughter to feel better again”
Amber felt a pain in her heart as she knew that her mother was trying to be strong, putting on a brave face but she was breaking into pieces.
**
Two days later
Something felt different today, Amber could feel her lips move as she called out to her mother but her voice failed her once more. For the first time she was aware of her surrounding, she had finally moved her lips. She tried opening her eyes and at first it felt heavy but then she tried again and she succeeded and quickly shut it closed again, the bright light coming through what she guessed was a window.
Amber was not one to give up, so she tried again this time taking her time to adjust to the bright light. She looked around her and she knew that it was definitely not her room, this room was different. Instead of her bright colored room this room was dull in color, plain white, machines, and tubes attached to her body. Amber felt like some kind of lab experiment gone wrong.
“Mom!” she yelled out for her mother but what was supposed to be a yell sounded more like a whisper and her throat hurt because it was dry. She felt her lips dry, when she licked it her lips she tasted blood.
Amber turned her head as she heard the machines beeping and then the loud thump of the door open, only for a nurse to walk in and tend to the machine and in no time the noise stopped. The nurse turned her attention to Amber who was now scared and not knowing what to do; the nurse smiled at her and proceeded to fixing Ambers pillows.
“I’ll be right back; I will go and call the doctor to see you now” before Amber could attempt to respond to the nurse, she had already left the room. Amber waited for what felt like an hour and then doctor walked into the room, he smiled at her and placed a file on the foot of Amber’s bead.
“Good evening Ms. Amber and how are you doing this lovely morning?” Amber opened her mother to speak but this time her voice failed her again and jut then she felt like a failure.
“It’s okay Amber; you don’t have to answer me, my name is Doctor Potter. All I want you to do is that every time I ask you something if it’s a yes blink once and if it’s a no blink twice?” he told her and Amber nodded her head in agreement.
Amber waited as the doctor conducted the exam in which he had told her that she was recovering quite fast but Amber could still not understand what she was being kept in the hospital for.
“Oh and one more thing, your family is on their way” hearing the doctor say that made her feel happy that she was going to see her family and not just hear them or feel their touch.
“You’re recovering quite well for someone who has been in a coma for a whole month” the doctor said that and then left Amber alone in the room, baffled at what she was hearing. She could not believe that she has been in a coma for a whole one month and it was only being communicated to her now.
Throughout this entire time Amber could still not understand why every time she shut her eyes she saw a blurry image of a man coming to her rescue, calling out her name but she could not make out whom he was.
Sure a tree had perhaps fallen on top of her car but who was this man that came to save her and where was he now?
