Chapter 35: A wise decision... Not!(1)

1020 Words
A day became two, and two became three. It has already been three days since the Marquis asked for the Stan family's help in subjugating the demonoid. Filzer could still remember how Marquis Heloin had asked him to wait for his word, but it has already been three days! Filzer was growing impatient as seconds ticked by without doing anything. The situation in the border had become stale. It was because Marquis Heloin made the mercenaries, soldiers, and knights to retreat to the city gate for the time being. And although, the Marquis's plan had somehow worked and there weren't any more casualties so far it was only a short-term effect. Casualties were bound to grown bigger as they continued to stall time. They had no information about the enemy other than the fact that it was a demonoid, which made the situation much worse than before. Cain stared at Filzer as he sank deeper on the couch with a grumpy look on his face. Seconds later, he sighed and shook his head. The ancient Dragon was acting like a child. Cain leaned back on his seat and inhaled as the delicious aroma of food waft in his nose. Telph was on the kitchen, cooking their lunch. For some reason, the three of them started to have a cooking schedule without even talking and deciding about it. "Just what could that hot-headed bastard be thinking to stall the subjugation by this much?!" Filzer raised his voice. With a snap, Cain's thread of patience was cut. He had enough of Filzer's complaints and tantrums for the last three days. Even a child would not throw a tantrum for that long of a time. He jumped from his seat and stomped his way to the kitchen where Telph was sipping on a spoon, tasting the soup that he was making. Cain sat on the counter and rest his hands on his palm before taking a deep breath, savoring the delicious aroma of the food. "It'll be done is a few minutes. Can you help me with the plates?" Telph closed the pot's lid and turned to Cain waiting for his answer. However, his actions were unnecessary because Cain would have already done it even without Telph asking him to do so. Silence engulfed the two of them as they did their respective tasks, but Telph broke the silence a few moments later. With a worried look on his face, he stared at the ground beside his feet as he asked: "Are you not worried?" Cain stopped placing the plates on the counter and glanced at Telph's way. It took him a few seconds before he answered. "Of course, I am worried. With out current situation it's not even strange if a m******e occurs." Cain looked back on the plates before moving his hands to continue his task at hand. "However, the center of the scene is silent. It's so quiet that it feels eerie." A frown appeared in Cain's face. The border became quiet as a mouse after the existence of the demonoid was revealed. It was the calm before the storm. No, it was more ghostly silent than calm. "Is the food ready?" Just as the suffocating atmosphere was spreading on the kitchen, Filzer appeared with a rather clear face. No more was the grumpy expression he wore for the past three days. "It's done. I was about to call you." Telph served the food in the counter where the plates and other utensils was already prepared. "Great." Filzer lightly sat on one of the chair and waited for Cain and Telph to take their seats before starting to munch on his food. "You're strange." Cain could not help but comment on Filzer's sudden shift of mood. "The city is noisy." FIlzer's eyes glowed with excitement as he spoke. Cain sighed and Telph just chuckled awkwardly. Ignoring their conversation, the three of them focused on their food and headed out to the city. Arriving at the gate, dozens of pairs of eyes were staring at them, be it overt or covert, the three of them noticed either way. Telph was the most conscious of the stares they were receiving the most, while the other two only let their guard up without anyone noticing. Arriving at the Central Plaza, the three of them could only gape at what they saw. A huge piece of white cloth was floating with the use of magic saying that a tournament would be held as a way of picking the right members of the subjugation party. Cain's face was creased upon reading the text written in humongous extravagant font. His thoughts of how unbelievable the view which unfolded in front of them was overtly shown to his face. Telph who was beside Filzer, read the letter with horror and worry mixed on hi face. However, the two of them soon flinched after feeling an intense aura from their side. Cain immediately grabbed Telph and pulled him away from Filzer and shielded him with his smaller build. Filzer, on the other hand, was exuding murderous aura. He couldn't believe what was written on the massive white cloth. His next actions made the people, who were also gazing up to the white cloth, to gasp in shock. With a flick of his finger, the white cloth was torn into pieces and burnt into crisp. The Marquis had stalled enough time for the demonoid subjugation, but with the current announcement that he so boldly made, the subjugation was move to an even more later date. "Oh my goodness. I did not expect Count Stan to arrive today. But you arrived at the best time. Everyone!" Marquis Heloin, who was standing at a podium in the very front of the crowd clapped his hands to get everyone's attention. "I want to introduce to you the people who would decided for the team making for the subjugation. Meet the Stan family, the family which had a long history in our empire and has protected the border ever since they were given a land outside the city by His Majesty, the Emperor!"
