Simone POV
He’s been talking nonsense towards me. He knew that I was a fighter, yet he never let me help him, even when his pack was under attack like this afternoon. His pride could be the end of him. Back to this evening, I saw him from inside the car. They were outnumbered. If only he let me help, at least he wouldn’t be as injured as right now.
I wasn’t prepared to lose him, not today. Only at this moment, I hoped that I could still hear him boasting about his Alpha ability. But instead, here he is, lying on his bed struggling for his life. I just learned another new thing about him that he wasn’t immune to silver as well.
It took me long enough to kill their leader. He was severely injured, and his face looked pale. His dad also in critical condition. “Maria, what can I do to help him?” I asked the healer in their pack. “There’s one way that we can do to quicken his recovery.” She said with an unreadable expression on her face.
“Tell me about it, Maria. I will do anything for him.” I replied confidently. For a moment, she looked unsure. “I need his mate’s blood. He had lost a lot of blood because of the shot.” Maria explained. I felt like my heart is being squeezed after hearing her words, and it hurt a lot. It hurts me to know that I couldn’t save him, simply because I wasn’t his mate. If only my blood could help, I would give it to him without a second thought.
I felt warm tears falling from the corner of my eyes. I saw Marcus sweating and pale, I have to do something. I took a deep breath and decided to swallow my pride. “Where is Charlotte?” I asked Maria. She looked afraid to answer me. “I don’t have any idea about her whereabouts, Luna. I think I saw her running into the woods. Alpha Marcus never really fond of her being here as well.” She said with hesitation. She doesn’t even look at me in the eye as she spoke.
I ran out to the woods and shifted to my wolf form. Trust me, she’s the last person that I would run into for help. But I have no other choice right now. Marcus is dying. I followed her scent, and it stopped near the lake. I saw her sitting there, staring at the moon.
“Charlotte…” I said. She turned her head towards me and looked utterly surprised. “What is our mighty luna doing here?” She scoffed at me, whisking her head away. “I need your help,” I said bluntly. I was surprised that I could say those words pretty smoothly. There’s no time for another bullshit. Marcus’s life was at stake right now.
She got up and walked towards me, raising one eyebrow. “Don’t joke around with me, Luna. You’re…” I didn’t let her finished her words, “It’s about Marcus.” I cut her. Her expression suddenly changed. “He’s dying right now…and we need your blood.” I took her hands. I can see fear and sadness in her eyes.
“He left me for you…Why don’t you give him your blood instead?” She talked back, shoving my hands away. “Because I’m not his mate! But you are… My blood couldn’t save him right now. Please, you’ve got to help him.” I stated the fact painfully. She looked at me in disbelief, but then she shifted towards her wolf form and followed me back to her pack.
***************************
Maria draws one small bag of Charlotte’s blood. I waited outside until I saw her came out of the room. She looked at me and turned away. “Wait, Charlotte!” She was halted for a while, with her back facing me. “I just want to say thank you…” I walked in front of her and took her hands. I can saw her hatred towards me from the look in her eyes. She stayed silent. “For saving Marcus…” I then continued.
She shoved my hands away again for the second time tonight. “I’m doing this for Marcus, not for you.” She coldly replied to me and left. I could understand why she hated me. I don’t like her either. But Marcus is more important right now. I went inside the room and saw him getting a blood transfusion on his hand.
“We were lucky that you’re able to find her, Luna,” Maria said as she secures the needle in Marcus' hand with a small tape. I smiled bitterly at her. “Is he going to survive now?” I asked, switching the topic. I just don’t want to talk about Charlotte tonight with her.
“We have to wait for an hour or so.” She replied. “Then, let me stay here with him. You can go now, Maria. Thank you for your help.” I said. She nodded and dismissed herself from the room. He was still in the same condition as I left him earlier. I wiped the sweat from his forehead with a piece of warm cloth. I stayed with him for a while, but then I fell asleep beside him.
***********************
I rubbed my eyes as I awake from my sleep. How long am I been sleeping? My eyes went to bed, and I saw him sitting there. “Marcus? You’re awake? How do you feel?” I asked as I studied his face. He looked like his usual self, only with slightly disheveled hair. “Of course, I am. You know that I was the Alp….” I hugged him tightly. He didn’t finish his words and hugged me back.
“I thought I’m gonna lose you, Marcus.” I sobbed. He rubbed my back softly. “Silly girl, You’ve never listened to me.” He replied with a comforting tone. I pulled away from him. “You could’ve died if I listened to you, Marcus,” I stated bluntly.
He kissed my lips tenderly. “I know…Thank you for saving me, Simone.” He said, stroking the side of my cheek. He rested his forehead on mine. “Actually, it wasn’t me who saved you…” I replied. He pulled away and furrowed his eyebrow in confusion.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” he asked me back. “Charlotte gave you her blood. Maria said that only mate’s blood can save you from that silver bullet.” I hardly admitted to him, gripping the blanket that covered his feet.
His expression was rather flat. “But you’re the one who killed their leader. If it wasn’t for you, maybe Charlotte would’ve got killed as well.” He tried to reasoned with me. I knew that he only wanted to cheer me up. I didn’t respond to him.
“How is my father?” he asked me again. “He’s in the other room. Since your father’s mate already died, it will take him a little longer to recover. But Maria said that his condition already passed the critical state. You don’t have to worry.” I told him.
“Simone, tell me what’s bothering you?” he asked, taking both my hands. “I wanted to help you to protect this pack. Marcus. And the same goes for you. We have to protect each other's pack if we’re going to marry.” I told him. His eyes were full of doubt as if he was afraid to repeat something wrong.
“If that can make you happy, then so be it…But I’ll still protect you because you’re a woman.” He finally said. “You just like my dad. I was more than capable of fighting, compared to five men here in your pack.” I stated. “I know, Simone. But I can’t let something happen to you. I can’t lose you…” he then said, pulling me back into his chest, it felt warm.
I felt secure in his arms, but I knew that I was destined to do more than that. I was a born warrior, and I just hope someday he could understand that.
