Jewel's POV
I sat between my brother and Tau. Both stiffened when they heard the front door open and close. Mortou stood turning to the double doors to wait for their entrance. Two huge men walked in. I can scent them are bears. They clap Mortou on the back.
"Been a long time dad!" They say in unison. I realize then they are twins. Both same colored eyes as Linzi, whilst their father's wild curly brown hair. This dark lashes and their eyes turn to our table. "Mom," they both speak softly giving her a nod. They take seats next to her.
Another guy strides in with a tall brown-haired woman. This guy has black hair, his eyes dark like Mortou. They are so similar they could be twins. The girl, with her brown curls, freckles, and eyes so blue they look fake glances at the table. Her nose flares a moment. My brother stiffens. I side-eye him to see he is shaking.
What's up? I ask him.
Mate. Came his tense words.
The girl? My eyes snap to his. He nods.
That two settle, across from my brother and me. I glance between her and him. Both are seated across from each other. Both are not breaking eye contact. Linzi clears her throat, "The twins are Jake and Jordan. they are second youngest but much like their father in power." Leaning down the spitting image of Mortou she smiled, "That is my son Maverick." She smiled at him. "He is older I think around 600 now." She chuckled as he nodded his head. Looking at the girl and at my brother, she smirked. "Mortou's great-grandaughter is named Jakarta."
"Jakarta," my brother murmured. I watched his eyes soften to her.
My brother having a mate will certainly change the things in the group. A loud roaring was heard, as were the vibrations inside the room. The front door swung open wide with a bang. "Linzi!" A deep male voice bellowed. "Mom!!" It hollered like a lost pup.
"For the love of my eardrums, in the damn dining room you wayward pup!" Linzi yelled back with exasperation.
I was expecting a momma's boy. I was not expecting what walked in the door. Completely threw me to the left-field like a curveball.
In walked a man dressed like he just came off a motorcycle. Black leather jacket, heavy boots, tattoos from his hands to his neck. tosseled black hair. He met Mortou who gave him a big hug. He was not built like Mortou, he was built like a wolf. Smaller than my brother but not by much. His arms looked corded and massive. He got to the table across from me. He shrugged his jacket off tossing it on his chair to expose a tank top and a good portion of his tattoos.
"This is Leon, I adopted him just after he was born. He is a Southern wolf." Linzi announced with a proud smile at him. "How is my great-grandson, Leo?" She asked the wolf in front of me.
"Leo and his misfits are doing well." He nodded. His eyes so dark they appeared to be black encircled by black lashes, had me lost in stupid once more. I did not remember Southern wolves looking like him. "I am guessing since you are flanked by these two," he flipped his fork in the direction of my brother and Tau. "You are to be the Queen?" He lifted an eyebrow as the corner of his lips raised in a devilish smirk.
I straightened my spine, blinking the stupid back to say, "I am." I raised my brow.
Leon started filling his plate, as he asked "who was your father?' not an ounce of emotion was in it.
My brother immediately began to growl his attention jumping to this new guy. " Mario Munoz," my brother snarled at him.
"It was the Lyican King who killed him?" Leon continued to ignore the growl or my gaze.
"Yes, watched it happen," I spoke making sure he knew I didn't care.
"Why?" Leon grabbed a biscuit leaning back in his chair to eye us both.
"My father tried to kill my mother and take us. He was never a kind man to her and she was the one who only offered us, love. I have had the pack link in my head since I was six years old." I paused closing my eyes a moment as I remembered the awful things I had heard. "I knew every little dirty secret he had." I spat the last part with disgust.
He leaned forward, dropping the biscuit to his plate as he looked into my eyes. "Those are the coolest eyes I have ever seen." He looked at me wide-eyed and amazed.
I knew then Akasa was at the surface. That reaction only happened when she surfaced. She was growling in my head that he had challenged our rank. "Do you challenge our rank?" Akasa's voice erupted out of me before I could stop her.
Leon sat back, lifting his hands to surrender. "I do not," He smirked. "You are most definitely the Queen to be. Just getting a feel for who I am working for." He looked down at Linzi. "Stronger than she looks indeed." He huffed grabbing his biscuit to finish stuffing it in his mouth.
"What is your wolf's name?" I heard Linzi ask me.
"Akasa," I answered as I got back to eating.
"Akasa," she repeated as I looked up it was like she was filtering through her memory. "Another interesting wolf." She nodded as she went back to eating.
What does she mean by that? I asked Akasa.
She is old, just shy of 2,000 years. She was cursed when Mortou marked her. Akasa answered.
What does that have to do with asking who you are? I was not going to be misdirected.
She has known your brother's wolf Tys and myself in our former lives. We are hardly ever gifted to new wolves. Only those with great power can wield us. You and your brother are the first in millennia. I could sense the pride Akasa had for me. I was still a little shocked.
My brother's mate? Why now? Honestly I was just curious.
He needs to be grounded as only a mate can provide. If a wolf could roll their eyes, she sure did.
Understood. I smiled in my head. Pulling out of my head, I saw that Leon was watching me. Much like I noticed Tau does. Except he bugged me. I wanted to shake it off. It excited me but creeped me out at the same time.
"I would think you would put your eyes on your plate." It was Tau's voice that broke the silence.
Leon's eyes darted to him. He titled his head to the side you could see him flare his nose trying to scent Tau. "What are you?" You could see he was curious.
"Something you can only hope you don't even have to fight." Linzi's words reached him. She looked down the table to Tau, raising her glass in salute. "Put your eyes on your plate pup." She went back to eating.
These whole events were strange. I was thrown off by so many things. Our new team would stay with Linzi and Mortou for the week. Then we would make our way down to the Southern wolf Kingdom. There we would begin the process of taking over. I knew I would have challenges for my place. I could choose my brother to fight in my place but that would not help my chances. I needed to battle to win. Tau seemed to be my only calm. He kept me grounded. I would be forever grateful for my mom making him come with me.
