chapter four

The stalking begins.

The noise outside my window woke me. I could hear people shouting. What is going on? I look over, and Jacob is still fast asleep. Slowly, I stumble to the window and peek out.

Oh great, it's our neighbors at it again. I am not sure if they fight to drink or drink to fight. But every week, they are outside fighting in the middle of the night. You would think that at their age, they'd stop doing this. I laughed to myself. Maybe that's what has kept them married for 50 years.

Suddenly, a movement caught my eye. Out of the shadow of the building across the street, a man appears.

"Wait, what?"

I shook my head. Is that Nathan? Sure enough, it was.

Why is he by that building. He's looking at me. How does he know where I live?

My mind raced with questions. I pulled the curtains closed and went back to bed. His presence seemed to linger in my mind. Finally, I fell asleep.

"Nathan," Maddie said in a loud voice. "Where have you been?" Her voice was harsh and confused.

Nathan started to speak quietly. "Maddie, don't get so upset. I went to the office. This case I am working on has me up in arms. I went to work on it while some things were fresh in my mind. "

"Oh, I see," Maddie said. "Next time, please wake me. I was worried."

As Nathan and Maddie settled down for the night, Maddie was uneasy. Why is he lying to me? What is he up to? I know he is lying because I still have the office keys in my bag.

I couldn't sleep. Nathan has been acting stranger ever since he met the Gallos.

Nathan and I met in law school. We were attending the same classes and both studying for criminal law. Nathan's family had money. So he didn't have to work to pay for school. My family was poor. I worked two jobs to pay for my schooling.

The only reason he asked me out was cause his buddies dared him too. We went on a few dates, but nothing serious.

Besides, the cheer queen had he eyes on him. I just didn't want to compete with her.

Sure enough, her and Nathan were married after college. Guess he found out she was a gold digger and liked spending money. Two years later, she divorced him for someone with more money.

Nathan says it's the best thing that could have happened, but I am not too sure. Six months later, I ran into Nathan on a law case. He asked me out, and wow, we have been together ever since.

When the law firm, Dean and Dean gave us the opportunity to work for them. We jumped at it.

We had decided a while ago that we didn't want kids. At least not til we were financially set.

Nathan's dad offered us jobs in his firm, but we wanted to do things our way. Besides, I was never good enough for his mother. I just avoided any conversations with her about life and children.

She hated my parents. To her, they were low-life trailer park trash.

Little did she know they were the sweetest people you could get to know. My dad was the school janitor and grounds keeper. My mom was the third grade teacher. They owned the double wide we lived in, and we had everything we needed. Just not big bank accounts. Nathan's mom couldn't understand that type of living.

I laid awake for a while with all this running through my mind. Finally, sleep took over, and I couldn't keep my eyes open. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

The alarm went off and startled me. I reached over to touch Nathan, but he wasn't there. I sat up in bed and was just getting ready to call his name.

Suddenly our bedroom door opens and in comes Nathan with my morning coffee.

"I'm so sorry I lied to you last night. Truth is, I went for a walk. This case I am working on has my head spinning. I thought maybe a walk would help. Next time, I will wake you. I didn't mean to worry you." He kisses my lips and hugs me tightly.

"Ok, thank you for being honest with me." I smile back at him.

While getting dressed, I still felt like he was hiding something. I brought up the party and how we met the Gallos.

"Yes, by the way Nathan says. I ran into Mrs. Gallo at the Frog. She told me we should try their food. That it's the best around. "

"When was this I asked? "

"The other day when I went for ice cream."

"Why didn't you tell me about it. "

"Truthfully, I forgot til you just mentioned their name. "

Is it my imagination, or did I just see him smile when he talked about her. My mind raced again. I told myself. Enough, Maddie, you are imagining things. Stop it.

Nathan and I left for work, but we didn't talk. Usually, he talks my ear off.

" Is there something on your mind, I ask?. "

"Just this case ," he replies.

:Tell me about it. Maybe I can help."

Finally, he starts talking, and all my fears disappear. I'm so glad you are talking to me about it. I can help. I am working on the case for his wife. We chatted all the way to work, and I felt so much better. This day is definitely going to be better, I thought as I sat down to my desk.

"Breakfest is served. "Jacob yells down the hall.

Kat and I are in her bedroom, packing all her things.

"Tomorrow, I am going with Aunt Lisa."

Kat is so excited about her vacation and the new clothes she has.

"Wait until Aunt Lisa sees my new bathing suit with the kitties on it. We can't forget about my new sandles. Let's put them in my small bag Kat says. That way, they won't get crushed with all my new clothes."

Breakfest was delicious, and Jacob hurried off to work.

Today he had to go to the main office . That office is located by Kryton. That's how we found the little town and the house. It has been a month, and we still haven't heard from the bank. Maybe today I will call them and see what is taken place.

Kat and I filled the day with packing and reading stories. Before we knew it, Jacob was home.

"Look, Kat, I have something for you. I stopped and saw Sam and Minnie today. This little doll is for you to take on your trip. Minnie made it special just for you. "

"Here are those apples you like so well. I stopped by the house, and the sign still says Pending. I keep hoping we hear something soon."

"Oh, by the way, I did call them today. Mr. Kleese informed me that he is just waiting for their reply. If they accept our offer, everything is a go. Hopefully, they will accept that offer. It's ten thousand dollars more than what they were asking. "

After supper, we all settled down. Morning would be here faster than we think. Lisa is picking Kat up at 6 am. The alarm goes off, and I shake Jacob.

"Rise and shine. It's time to get Kat up. "

To our surprise, Kat was awake.

" Candy, I am all ready. "Think Aunt Lisa will like it?"

"Yes, I do." You look so pretty in your green short set. That's a good outfit to wear. It will be comfortable for the long trip. I brushed Kats' hair and braided it.

"All ready, Jacob," Kat said. "How do I look?."

"Beautiful as always. "

Just then, the doorbell rings. It's Aunt Lisa, I will let her in. Lisa gave us all the phone numbers and places they will be staying at. With lots of hugs, Kat and Lisa were on their way.

Jacob and I took a deep breath. Sitting at the table, drinking coffee, and talking about the house.

Our phone rings." It's the bank,"Jacob whispers. "They want us to come in tomorrow morning. "

"Yes, we will be there at 9 am. Thank you for calling."

Jacob smiles and with a happy tone to his voice. He says they want us to come in and talk about the house. I just wanted to jump out of my chair. Maybe our dreams are starting to come true.
