How we met.

I laid there awake for a long time. For some reason, that couple kept popping up in my mind. I'm not sure if it was the way he kissed my hand or her eyes. She had those eyes that would send chills down your spine. Even Jacob noticed her eyes.

Truthfully, I think I got more annoyed at how she was looking at my husband. Sorry, but he's mine was all I kept thinking.

Jacob and I meet in high school. We had moved there due to mom's job. After all, she was raising me all by herself.

I never knew my dad. He disappeared after work one day. Never came home or gave any reason. Just left without a word. Mom took it well. She had no choice.

Then I arrived before my due date. What a surprise it was because I was supposed to be a boy. Stunned, but excited mom decided to name me Candy. She never would tell me the reason behind the name.

I was in 10th grade when we moved. My first day at school was awful. Guess no one ever heard the name Candy. I cried all the way home.

It was my second week there when my eyes saw Jacob. I was in the cafeteria when I saw him walk in. This tall, good-looking guy.

Oh yes, all the girls fell all over him. Of course, the school bully just happened to find me that day. Guess you could say it was a blessing in some way.

That day, I met Jacob. He came to my rescue. He sat with me, and we talked all through lunch. After school, he met me and walked me home. That was the start of a beautiful relationship. We were together all the time.

He told me the story of how his mom and dad met. She was in Italy attending a job conference for her company. His dad was the owner of the land they were building on.

Jacob would laugh and say it was love at first sight. Tilly would say it was hate at first site. Tilly said Anthony chased her all week, asking her out. Finally, she gave in. I am so glad she did.

Jacob's dad and Tilly were married in Italy and moved to the USA to have another wedding here.

Tilly would never talk about how Tony died, but Jacob told me about it. It's so sad to lose someone to cancer. Jacob said it was after Tonys death that Tilly found out she was pregnant.

Jacob and Lisa were a lot older, but that worked out great. Tilly now had to run her company and her husband's. Tilly finally sold her husband's to his brother so she could focus on her family and company.

I think that's why Jacob took up construction in school and college.

I couldn't go to college because money was tight for us. So, every weekend, Jacob would come home.Those two years were the longest. But we made it.

I don't think I will ever forget Jacob's and my first time. We were still in school in our last year attending the basketball game.

After the game, we decided to help clean up. So under the bleachers we went. All of a sudden, Jacob grabs me and hugs me so tight." I love you. Candy was all he said." With kisses and hugs, we fell to the floor.

Gently pulling each other's clothes off, he entered me. We were so into each other that we never gave it a thought about being in school. Afterward, we giggled out loud. That's when reality set in, and we remembered where we were .

Thank goodness that everyone had left. We quietly tipped toed out the side door. Laughing all the way to our car. Oh, the memories.

I finally fell asleep to be woken up to the phone ringing. Jacob answers it.

"Gallo residents, how can I help you. "

"Jacob shut up" was all I could hear .

"What now, Lisa, "Jacob replied .

" I am going to France next week and I would like to take Kat with me. Will that be ok? "

Hang on, let me ask Candy.

" Lisa is going to France, and she wants to take Kat."

" That will be fine," Candy replies.

Every year, Lisa takes Kat on vacation to somewhere. This year it's France, last year it was Germany .

" Great," Lisa says." I will pick her up on Friday." With that, Jacob hangs up the phone.

We will tell Kat when she wakes up. She will be so excited.

Jacob looks at me and frowns.

"What is all I said. Why that look?"

"You were so restless in your sleep last night. What is on your mind ?"

"Nothing much."

"Ya,Jacob says. Just like the cow jumping the moon. "

"Ok, I laughed. I just couldn't get that couple out of my mind. They just left a really bad feeling with me."

"I think you are overreacting," Jacob replied.

" But I have to agree they were a little strange. It's hard to believe they are lawyers. I guess it was the way they presented themselves. I have never met anyone like them."

"Good morning Kat, guess what? Aunt Lisa is coming by on Friday to pick you up. "

Kats eyes lite up. " Oh boy, it's vacation time again." Where am I going this time? Kat asks?"

"You are going to France.

Remember when you went across the ocean last year."

"Yes, Kat answered."

" Well, it will be like that again." Kat got so excited. I could see her hoping down the hall, singing, "I am going to France."

After Jacob left for work, Kat and I got around. " Let's get the grocery shopping done and stop at our favorite bakery."

I never noticed the couple at the register til I heard "Mrs. Gallo, how are you? "

"Oh, hello, Jenny and Mike:. So nice to see you again." We all stood there and chatted for a few minutes, then said goodbye.

I felt uneasy all of a sudden. That feeling that you are being watched came over me. I looked around and couldn't see anyone, but I couldn't shake that feeling. Kat and I finished up our shopping and headed to the bakery.

" Candy, can I get my favorite cookies to take with me? "

" Of course " I said. The clerk came over and asked what we wanted.

"One dozen of the soft chocolate chip cookies, please," Kat replied.

"One dozen coming up, the clerk said. "

"What can I do for you, Mrs. Gallo."

" I will take two loafs of your Italian bread and one loaf of your pumpernickel bread."

Kat and I cashed out and headed home.

After we put groceries away, we decided to go out for lunch.

"Let's go to the Frog, "said Kat.

That's her favorite place to get her fries and hamburger.

There's that feeling again. I would look around, but I still could not see anyone. Kat wanted to play on the swings, so off she went. I sat there with my coffee watching her. Thinking how much joy she has brought to our lives.

Suddenly, I see someone approaching Kat. Who could be? I didn't recognize him. I walked up calmly and said. "Excuse me, but do I know you? '

As he turned around, I realized it was Nathan .

"Oh, hello, Nathan ."

"Hello, Mrs. Gallo,"he replied.

"What are you doing here I asked."

"I was coming to get some of their ice cream. We are hooked on their cookie dough. "

'Yes, they have the best ice cream. Kat loves their fries. They have excellent food here."

"Well, the wife and I will have to try it. Thank you for the tip. "

Kat and I said goodbye and started to leave. Nathan held out his hand, and I started to reach for it to shake it goodbye. Once again, he took my hand and kissed it. There was that weird feeling again.

Returning to his car, Nathan watches Candy with Kat. Taking a few photos, he sends them to Phillip. "Don't put her up for bids yet. I want this one for myself first. " Sitting there watching her gave him great pleasure. She will be mine first before I sell her was his thoughts as he drove away.

That night, when Jacob got home, we talked about our day. I told him about feeling like I was being followed and how we ran into Nathan . Once again, he assured me I was overreacting.

I just can't shake it. there is something about this couple that just doesn't set right with me. But I took Jacob's advice and let it go. Or so I thought.
