Beatrice
I left the boys eating their food and decided that before we left and made our way to the other house that it would be prudent to check we weren't being watched. If Walter has given up our location then it was possible that Drew had paid someone in the area to watch the house until he could get here.
It's what I would do if I had the kind of money he has.
I went back into the small sitting area and began to rummage through one of the smaller bags.
I found the book I was looking for, a large well read spellbook that had belonged to my mother. She had left it with me before she left.
I flicked through the pages until I found a suitable spell and thankfully it didn't require any ingredients other than a map of the house and surrounding area.
I smiled to myself as I remembered the small print out of the map that Walter had given me to show me the location of the house. At the time we hadnt known if I was suspected of anything and with Drew having the contacts he does he could easily have been monitoring my phone. So rather than texting we would meet in person and exchange any information face to face. That was the reason for the paper copy of the map as opposed to a text or website.
I pulled out the map and laid it flat on the table in front of me and quietly whispered the incantation from the book. The spell didn't call for me to be quiet I just didn't want the boys to hear me.
Almost instantly several reds dots appeared glowing on the map. My suspicions were correct. The house was being watched. In fact there was someone right outside the front of the house.
I cursed under my breath.
This was not how I had expected things to go.
I needed to dispose of these spies and quickly. If they were watching the house then that could only mean one thing. Walter had indeed cracked and given up my location in which case Drew and Isabella were most definitely already on their way here.
I was no match for them even with a few spells up my sleeve.
" Jack, Jacob" I called down the stairs to them.
" I have to nip outside for a few minutes. You need to stay down there until I tell you to come out. It's all part of the game."
" Ok Miss Beatrice" They shouted back up the stairs in unison.
I picked up a different bag and searched through it until I found a large vial with a silvery liquid. I had prepared this before I had left home. It was a concoction of liquid silver and wolfsbane with some anesthetic mixed in.
I collected a tranquilliser gun from the kitchen and began to carefully fill the darts with the liquid.
Once I had filled eight darts I picked up a spray and covered myself with it. This was of my own design and completely masked my scent.
Taking the gun in one hand and the map in the other I crept to the back door and began to circle around the house as quietly as I could.
Just before I came to the front of the house I stopped and listened. I could hear the very faint sound of someone breathing quietly in one of the large hedges that ran around the front of the house. I slowly inched my head around the corner and sure enough there almost completely hidden in the hedges was a large grey wolf. My masking spray was obviously working as he hadn't noticed me.
I levelled the gun and took aim squeezing the trigger and with a pop the dart flew towards the wolf and hit him in the neck before he had chance to even react.
I watched as his eyes went wide for a second and then he began to shake and dropped to the floor. It only took a few seconds before he changed back into his naked human form. He was unconscious and slowly being poisoned.
I felt a twinge of guilt in my chest at his condition but this was my only way of escaping from here with the boys safely.
I then followed the map as quickly as I could and sought out each glowing red dot, repeating the process of shooting each hidden wolf with a dart.
Around twenty minutes later I was able to return to the house satisfied that there was no longer anyone watching the house.
I packed everything back into the bags and called for the boys to come and ushered them out to the car.
I loaded everything into the car and pulled away from the house.
I breathed a quiet sigh of relief as we began to cruise along a country road.
This area was mostly uninhabited except for a small wolf pack to the east. I was sure that the rest of the drive would be easy sailing.
Ten minutes later I noticed two large black jeeps in my rear view mirror and I got an uneasy feeling.
I pushed my foot a bit harder onto the accelerator and the car picked up some speed. The jeeps began to pick up speed too.
I cursed my bad luck.
After everything I had done this morning it would appear as though somehow someone had still managed to find me.
We were still miles away from the house I was headed for and I had no way of losing the tail I had picked up.
I pushed my foot as hard on the accelerator as I could and the car lurched forward even faster.
The boys began to scream behind me. They knew this wasn't normal but convincing them it was wasn't at the top of my agenda right now.
The car began to swerve from side to side as I struggled to keep it steady on the road.
Then out of the corner of my eye I saw a flash of red pass the car. Next thing I know there's a huge red wolf on the road directly in front of the car.
There is no way for me to get round it and I know that hitting it will damage my car just as much as it injures the wolf so I slam my foot on the brake.
The tyres screech and squeal as they grip to the gravel of the road and the smell of burning rubber fills my nostrils.
The car skids to a halt about five foot away from the wolf.
I can tell by the way it is holding itself and snarling at me that this is Isabella.
Only a mother separated from her pups could look so angry and out for blood.
