Kai was perched between Irene and me for the past 20 minutes. This girl, who used to always show him attitude was all of a suddenly depending on him. Her attitude seemed so welcoming towards him now that we were in trouble.
Of course, she knew Kai was a fighter, he could be a survivor, and decided to stick with him.
Caz, who also had a crush on Irene, kept glaring at us from time to time. And then a weird silence engulfed the atmosphere, more like the silence before the storm.
The windows shattered with the ear-blasting screams from the students under them and the zombies began to come inside.
"Aaaaaarghhhhh!" one of the students, who used to get bullied a lot, screamed when a zombie chewed upon her skin, and the blood splattered everywhere.
The tumult that was caused resulted in shoving each other to the side and trying to get out of this tight space without getting bitten up or eaten alive by the zombies. I wanted to get on my feet and lung at the zombies but I don’t think my involvement could save everyone.
"Vivi! What are you thinking, let's go!" Kai held his hand out for me and gestured me to hurry up. I grabbed his hand and the three of us, including Irene, zipped out of the room in one piece.
I did see a lot of my fellows getting eaten and dragged around, it truly was a horrifying sight.
"Let's go, let's go." Kai kept shoving the zombies out of our way as we made it out of the school.
We halted once we were in the open ground, just to turn around and see most of the students throwing their selves from the top floors.
I've no idea what pushed us to this limit, my heart cried at the view in front of me.
"Just don't look back," Kai wrapped his arm around me and shook me awake. We saw a few more people coming out of the school and headed in our direction.
Maybe they didn’t know what I have seen before coming to get Kai out of school, he has no idea the horrors I have seen and even been a part of the things that happened a few hours ago, but I aimed to keep my mouth shut for the sake of Kai.
"They are coming!" Caz yelled as he approached us with his best Buddy, Ricky, and a girl named Hila, who would always be picked up by everyone.
It was a miracle that Caz decided to save someone other than himself and his buddy.
"There is a store down the road, we can hide there till this group of zombies scatters around." Irene, after being silent for so long, suggested.
"That's a good idea." Kai quickly agreed with her along with everybody else.
Soon we made it to the store she was talking about and it did look like the zombies had already ruined the place.
"This roller shutter will be able to keep us safe for some time being." Caz rolled the door down and we were welcomed by a ransacked store.
Obviously, people needed stuff more than ever now. We walked between the aisles to make sure there was no one infected or a zombie left inside with us.
"What the heck can something like this even happen?" Ricky, after announcing that there were no zombies with us, shouted in exhaustion.
The three dudes were in their jock jackets and holding any sort of thing they could find for protection, anything that could be used as a weapon.
"Vivi! You were in your house; you must have seen or heard the news about this outbreak." Irene turned to me and asked, her eyes genuinely showed how frightened she was. Everybody agreed with her and darted their attention to me, watching my face.
Could I even tell them what actually happened? How I could tell them that it wasn't something restricted to our school only, that it had already consumed our neighborhoods, our homes, our entire town?
"The vaccine they were preparing for a deadly virus formed some weird changes in the bodies of the test subjects. The moment the test vaccine reached their body, they passed away but only to wake up again and cause chaos." I couldn't really look at them in the eyes anymore. The problem wasn't only that, my body was tired and exhausted from all the exertion it went through for few hours
"So, they must be looking for a way to get this problem resolved right?" Ricky stepped forward and inquired.
It was weird how we were all having a conversation. Prior to this, the two friends were hardly communicable, their relentless bullying and mean attire had made them hard to even look at.
"I don't know about our town, but they took a few of the people to the safe zone." the moment I announced this part, they shared glances, "In helicopters." as I finished, they understood the severity of the situation.
"This means that they might come back to save more people," For the first time, Hila spoke.
"We should go to the base where they are taking the survivals to the safest zone," Caz suggested and almost all of the boys nodded.
"No! I have to go back home. My mother and I were alone in the house for the previous few days, which means when all this broke down, my mother wasn't even around to save my brother." Irene's heartbreaking words made us look at her.
"I've to go!" She insisted but Kai held her hand tightly.
"I'll come with you." He added and my heart skipped a beat.
"But Kai, we have to go." Call me selfish, but I came all the way to the school for Kai, I wouldn't let him jeopardize his life like that.
"You are so selfish." Caz was the first one to announce it to my face, "we all have our families to look after. You probably saw your mother riding the helicopter, what about us?" He continued while pointing his finger at my face.
I had never liked Caz and he proved me right for always thinking low of him.
"You wanna go with her? Then go! Kai and I are going to the base," I held Kai's hand and announced while not breaking eye contact with Kai.
"You can go! I'm staying with her." surprisingly, my friend slid his hand free from my grip and looked at Irene.
"Kai!" it was indeed a shocker that he chose her over me. I looked around and noticed everybody shaking their heads in disappointment towards me.
