CHAPTER 4: Desire.
"I still don't understand what the hell I'm doing here," Sadie murmurs in my ear, looking bored. Going out to party has always been my plan, never hers. Sadie prefers to be locked in her room, rereading one of her favorite books or watching for the fifth time one of those shows she loves so much.
"Because I asked you to," I tell her, taking the vodka martini I ordered from the bartender a few minutes before. "Are you sure you're not going to drink anything?"
"No, thanks."
I smile at her, shaking my head. However, I ask her for one of those sweet cocktails she likes so much. She reluctantly takes it and stays by my side as I walk over to where Jer and my brother are.
"What are you guys talking about?" I ask as I slyly watch Sadie, her shoulders tense, sit down next to my brother.
"I was just telling Tyler about the company, butterfly," Jeremy explains and immediately a huge smile breaks out on my lips.
"It's great, isn't it, Tyler?"
My brother nods absently, sipping his drink as he watches Sadie tense up next to him.
"Are you going to work with your dad?" Sadie asks Jeremy, her eyes curious.
"My dad wants me to run the company when I graduate, so he thinks it's a good idea for me to start coming in on my own time to help him with some things."
"Congratulations, Jeremy," Sadie replies with an almost imperceptible, but tender smile on her lips. "I'm sure you'll do great."
"And how are you doing? I hear you're looking for a job, have you found one yet?"
Jeremy and Sadie have always gotten along well, the fact that we all grew up together has brought us together in a very obvious way. And even though my brother and Sadie sometimes have their differences, I know that deep down they care about each other.
"I wonder who told you about it" she says amused, looking at me.
"Do you remember Easton?" I interject for her. Jeremy nods his head. I watch out of the corner of my eye as my brother pays attention to our conversation. "His dad has a bar he's going to start running, and Easton offered Sadie a job as a waitress."
Tyler lifts his drink to his lips to down it in one gulp.
"Are you sure you want that job?" Jeremy asks with concern plastered on his face. "Dealing with drunks can't be an easy task."
"I couldn't find any other jobs," she explains. "They all asked for experience that I don't have, so I had no choice."
"Well, you know what you're doing."
"Why don't you just put your pride aside and let your mother pay for your college?" My brother interjects.
"Tyler, stay out of it" Sadie's voice rises a little.
"I'm just saying" he excuses himself, raising his hands in a peace sign. "Come on, Sadie, don't be stupid. You're not used to dealing with drunks, in fact, you don't even drink."
"You're all exaggerating, I'm not a delicate little girl. If I took the job, it's because I can handle it" she stares at us, then sighs. "I'm just... going to the bathroom."
She stands up and my brother stops me as I'm about to go after her.
"Let go, I'll go."
I nod, plop back down next to Jer and we both watch in silence as the two of them argue in front of our eyes.
Tyler stops Sadie by the forearm, says something to which she yells at him and gestures with her arms effusively. She looks angry, my brother does too, until in slow motion I watch as my brother tenderly cups her cheeks and whispers something against her forehead, causing her to immediately calm down.
I sigh and wonder when they will finally give in to their feelings.
My brother takes her to the bar and orders food, the one thing Sadie will never say no to.
"I bet it's wings" Jer says next to me.
"With hot sauce" I add.
"Just like them."
I stick my finger in my mouth and fake vomit, which makes him laugh out loud.
"You're talking about my brother and best friend."
"Who will soon be sharing more than hot wings, I bet you."
"Has Ty told you he loves her?"
"He tells me he hates her," he says with a laugh, "I can't stand her, she gets on my nerves, how imprudent she is," he simulates my brother's voice, making me laugh.
"Yes, he loves her."
Jer and I watch like two gossipy onlookers as my brother and Sadie engage in more conversation. They look furious at each other, yet their posture is comfortable, they seem to have confidence in each other.
"I bet they're boyfriend and girlfriend in a month."
"I don't think so, they're both too foolish."
"Look at them" and Jer points his head towards them, my brother is stealing a wing from Sadie's plate and she flicks his fingers hard, causing him to respond to the gesture with a quick hair pull.
She howls, he laughs, and they argue again.
It's like a vicious circle that repeats and never ends.
"Let's dance" Jer asks me, standing up and holding out his hand.
"I thought you'd never ask me."
And taking his hand, we move to the dance floor, where we dance amidst laughter and funny steps that make us laugh. The people around us stare, but that doesn't stop us. I feel the sweat running down my back, so I pull out my jean jacket and fan myself with my hand. I leave the jacket on our table and return to Jer.
The heat is horrible.
"You dressed to conquer, Rora" Jer says in a strange voice, making me laugh.
I look down at what I'm wearing, a simple dress molded to my figure. I haven't dressed any different from how I always dress when we go out to party, but by the look on Jeremy's face, you'd think I always put a cardboard bag over it and this is the first time I'm wearing real clothes.
I go to speak, but am interrupted when Sadie comes up to me and angrily says: "I'm leaving, I can't stand your brother."
My best friend starts storming towards the exit, while an equally angry Ty comes after her, yelling, "Come on, Sadie, don't get mad."
And there they go, as bubbly as ever.
Jer looks at me as I look at him and, as if in sync, we both shrug, then laugh out loud.
Then I hear it, Vigilant s**t blaring from the speakers, making me scream with excitement.
"I love that song!" I shout out to Jer, already wrapped up in the sensual music and lyrics of the song.
Without stopping to think about anything but the beat of the music, I start swaying my hips, laughing and singing out loud to the song. As my hair crashes in my face from the movements I make, I notice that Jeremy is standing still, staring at me.
"Aren't you going to dance?" I ask him, frowning as I see him just looking at me.
"I..." His hands suddenly come out and grab my hips, pulling me closer to him. "Yeah, sorry... I got distracted."
His hands on my body start to set the beat and I ignore how close together we are, I just laugh as I sing the song at the top of my lungs, my skin crawling with goosebumps and the lyrics pouring out of me like a hymn.
Suddenly, when the song is halfway through, I feel his breath on my neck, which makes me shiver from the breath of air he sends across my skin. His lips brush like a feather against my neck, so imperceptibly that I even think I imagined it, but it's the tingle left in place that tells me it wasn't my imagination.
My body shudders from head to toe and I freeze for an instant.
Jeremy has never acted this way with me.
"Are you okay?" I pull back to meet his eyes.
"I don't know what's wrong with me," he says in my ear.
"What do you mean?" I look at him in confusion.
He doesn't look away from me as his hand slowly moves to my lower back and pulls me tightly to him.
We both moan as we feel the contact.
"Jeremy, you...?" I swallow as I feel his erection against me.
He looks at me almost helplessly, his eyes on me as he waits for me to direct what happens next.
"Do you want to stop?" I ask.
Jer denies, pulling me closer to him, until my breasts crush against his chest, causing his eyes to dilate and the erection against my belly to harden further.
I don't know if it's the Martini I have in my system or my love for him that prompts me to speak, but my lips release the wrong words.
"Then don't stop."
He grunts and the next thing I know we're dancing close together, so close that I feel every muscle in his body marked against mine.
"I want you" his hands move my hair to one side to clear space for his lips that begin to spread wet kisses across my skin. His mouth sucks a soft spot on my neck and I immediately arch for him.
At what point did things turn up the heat so quickly?
His hands slip inside my dress and I shiver as he begins to caress my thigh with extreme gentleness. I bring my hands to his neck and pull him closer to me as his lips move up my ear towards my jaw.
"I'm going to kiss you" he whispers against my skin.
Deep down I know this is wrong. Jeremy just broke up with Sabrina and even though tonight it seems like it hasn't affected him, I'm not so sure about that. But even though I know it's wrong, I don't stop him.
It's there, right in front of me, what I've dreamed of my whole life.
"Do it" I murmur in a very low voice.
And the next thing I feel, are his lips falling on mine.
His tongue doesn't wait a second to make its way into my mouth to taste me completely. His kiss is rough, needy and hungry. As if he's been craving me for years.
Kissing him feels like glory and I feel desire run hot through my veins, my hips move against his, seeking friction. The hand in my hair grips and moves my face in the other direction. Jeremy pulls my lips hungrily, in an obscene, lustful kiss.
His hands lift up my thigh, gluing me completely to him and I don't even care who's watching us.
I've been waiting for this moment for many years and I don't plan to stop.
Our mouths seem to be at war as lips, tongues and teeth fight to win the battle. He bites and I bite, his tongue probes in the right places, enticing me to do the same.
His hands shamelessly travel to my ass and he moves me against him, my hips at the same time searching, we both friction in the right place and I feel goose bumps erupt all over my body.
"Jeremy" I moan with difficulty over his mouth because he doesn't stop kissing me.
"Let's go" he sucks hard on my lower lip with his mouth.
"Where to?"
"To my house... no one will see us."
I manage to pull away from his lips for a moment and look at him.
His eyes are fully dilated with excitement.
And my lips release the words that I know, will condemn me: "Okay, let's go."
