Episode 8 - A Reminder of the Past

“A penny for your thoughts?” Martha’s voice interrupted Mandy’s thoughts.     “Hi mom. Good morning,” Mandy smiled at her.      “Hi baby,” Martha came closer and hugged her. “I knew you’d come here.”      “Of course mom. As usual,” Mandy said as she embraced her mother.     “What are you thinking about? You seem too deep about it.”      “I just had a nightmare, mom.”      “Oh, my poor baby. You must have been stressed out a lot lately.” Martha started stroking her hair.     “Not really, mom. Just had a few cases. That’s all.”     “It still pays to get a good rest, baby.”     “Yes mom. I’ll do that.” Mandy laid her head on her mom’s chest. Ah, it is still different to have loving parents, she thought.     “Dad’s already preparing your favorite breakfast, baby.”     “Oh, he never fails to amaze me.”     Both mother and daughter laughed.     Martha then sat on another rocking chair beside her daughter. Every time she comes home, this is their habit as a family, drinking coffee while talking on the veranda overlooking the beautiful lake at the back of their house then eating breakfast and talking until lunch time. This is their normal weekend as a family.     An hour already passed, but the mother and daughter are still enjoying their small talk. While they are talking, Martin Jacobs came with a tray. On it are platters of toasted loaf bread, scrambled eggs, peanut butter, strawberry jam and three cups of coffee. Martin made sure that there’s a cup for his baby. Although he already guessed that she prepared one for herself, she still likes asking his dad to make her one as a sign of endearment.     “Daddy! You are the best!” Mandy stood up and took the tray from her dad. He gave it to her then he sat down at the empty rocking chair at the right side his daughter. Mandy placed the tray on top of the table placed in the middle of their rocking chairs.     “Hmm. These are my favorites, daddy,” she said sweetly and gave her dad a kiss on the cheeks.     “I know, baby. That’s why I woke up early to prepare them,” Martin said in a satisfied tone. He is happy to see her grow up into a beautiful lady. She remained sweet from the time he and Martha decided to adopt her up until now. She may have attained great things in life, but she still remained humble like her father. Martin paused.     Her father… her real father. His heart felt painful. He automatically put his right hand on his chest.     “Dad? Are you alright?” Mandy noticed the look on his face and his act of holding his heart.     “Y-Yes, baby,” Martin responded. “Don’t worry about me.”     Martha looked at her husband. Right away, she noticed his pale face and his gesture of putting his hand on his heart.     “Honey?” she said as she looked at him intently. “Are you sure?”     Martin looked at her straight in the eye. “Yes, hon. I’m perfectly fine.”     As if Martha understood the gesture of her husband, she held his hand and assured him that she will be right beside him whatever happens.
