Why is dad experiencing chest pains? Is he really alright? Mandy can still remember the expression on her dad’s face as he held his chest. If only he agreed to be taken to the hospital, but he didn’t. She and her mother tried to force him but he insisted that he is alright. In the end, they were not able to take him to the hospital. Anyway, I hope he is alright.
Beep, beep!
Suddenly, Mandy’s mind went back to the present. The car at her back is impatiently blowing its horn. Due to her deep thinking, she didn’t notice that the light turned green. She drove upon realizing that she is causing the traffic. After spending quality time with her family, she is driving back to the city. Ah, she is driving straight to the office. Laila said she has something urgent to tell her. It must be about the case from Mr. Dawson.
Mandy drove for about three hours when her phone rang.
Ring, ring!
She took her earphones and received the call.
“Hello?”
“It’s Laila here, Mandy.”
“Yes, I’m on my way, Laila. I’ll be there in 10 minutes.”
“Alright then. I’ll wait for you.” Laila said in a shaky voice.
“Okay Laila. Just… relax.” Mandy can hear Laila’s heavy breath on the other line. “It’s gonna be okay. Just wait for me."
“Okay. Please hurry up, Mandy. Bye.” Laila hung up.
What’s Laila so scared about? Mandy wondered. Since she received her call early today, she has been hearing her heavy sigh on the other line. Whatever! I’ll know later, she thought.
The gate automatically opened when Mandy reached the office. The guard there knows her car. It must be Mark, she is sure. She lowered the window to see him.
“Thank you, Mark,” she said as she nodded to the security guard on duty.
“No problem, Atty. Mandy. My pleasure,” Mark smiled.
Mandy went straight to her office through the elevator after parking her car on the basement of the building of their office.
“Laila?” she called when she did not see her on the table stationed in front of her door.
There’s no answer. She must be in the library, she thought. Passing through the conference room, she headed towards the left wing of their office where the library is situated.
“Laila?” She proceeded inside the library. From where she is standing, she can see Laila. Laila appeared to have not been taking care of herself for days. Her hair is messy, and she seems to have not taken a bath. Oh look, the clothes she is wearing are crumpled all around. “Oh Laila, I did not mean that you overwork yourself,” Mandy said to herself as she approached her bestfriend and secretary rolled into one.
“Laila?” Mandy said in a soft voice.
“Wah!”Mandy nearly jumped from her seat because she was surprised.
“Laila, relax!” Mandy said, noticing Laila’s sensitivity and overreaction. “Laila, I’m here. What’s going on with you?”
Laila calmed herself down. With her scared appearance, she held Mandy by the shoulders. Alarmed, she delivered the following words, “Laila, we have to back out from this case!”
