“Yes, Laila Rivera? Why are you calling at this hour?” Mandy said after checking her wristwatch. Laila is calling at three in the morning. “Do we have any emergencies?”     “Mandy, do you know what kind of case you got this time?” Laila cannot hide her nervousness. Yes, Mandy is her boss, but she is also her bestfriend. She doesn’t want her taking cases that could endanger her life.     “Are you referring to the one from Mr. Dawson?”     “Yes. Mandy, you don’t know what kind of case this is. Do you know that I have been researching about it since the day you gave the case file to me, and I have not been able to stop until this time? I have not been able to sleep because I’m scared. Mandy, this is not just an ordinary case. We’d better back out before it’s too late.”     “Laila, calm down.” Mandy responded. “You know that I’m not the type who gives up in the middle of the fight.”     “I know, but I’m scared for you. I’m not just your secretary, I’m your bestfriend.”     “I know. Why? What have you found out so far?”     “Mandy, the victim in this case is a very controversial figure. He was the best Vice-President our country ever had; however, he was murdered together with his family, maids and security guards.”     “I can see nothing but an ordinary murder case, Laila.”     Laila sighed on the other line. She knew it. She knew Mandy would say this. She would never back out once she put her hand on the plow. She is not the kind who gives up easily on a case.     “Mandy, my research says that all the people involved in the case either died a tragic death or met an accident that rendered them inutile.”     “Laila, that doesn’t mean that those weird things would happen to us.”     “But Mandy…” Laila paused, knowing that her effort to dissuade Mandy out of this fight would go useless.     “Laila, I’ll be travelling back to the city tomorrow. By then, let me know in detail what you have found out.”     “Yeah, take care of yourself, Mandy.” Laila sighed.     “I know. Love you.”     “Love you, too.”     Mandy looked at her wristwatch again. Ah, it’s 3:30 in the morning. She laid her back to sleep again. However, sleep would not visit her regardless of what effort she puts in. She tossed to and fro from one side of the bed to another. It was 5 in the morning when she decided that it’s hopeless to go back to sleep. Thus, she woke up and headed straight to the kitchen.     A coffee person, she reached at the cupboard and got her favorite flavor. Ah, macchiato. This could make her day good. She poured hot water on her mug and poured the coffee mixture. Then she stirred it. Hmm. What a smell. It smells like heaven. She smiled to herself, picked up her mug and headed to the veranda. She positioned herself on the rocking chair overlooking the beautiful lake at the back of their house. She may have had a nightmare but at least, she is starting her day right.
