Chapter 10 - An Unexpected Involvement

554 Words
“Laila, what have you found out? Tell me,” Mandy said calmly. “You don’t need to behave like this.” This is the first time that she has seen Laila behave like this. As her secretary, she has given her a lot of murder cases to research about in the past. However, she has not seen her behave like this ever.     Laila began to shake. “Mandy, I’m getting scared as I research about this case. Look, it has been twenty-five years since the crime has been committed but there is no development in the case yet. Worst, all those who handled the case either died a tragic death or got involved in tragic accidents. They were dead and those who survived were maimed, Mandy.” Laila’s eyes reveal fear and doubt.     Mandy held Laila. “Laila, that doesn’t mean that those things will happen to us,” Mandy assured her.     “No, you don’t understand. My father, my late father loved Vice-President Morris Parker when he was alive. God knows how he covered our walls with his tarpaulins and posters. My father was his avid fan. He collected everything pertaining to him. Even after he died, my father has done his own private investigation. He collected everything and put them on his treasure box. Mandy, I saw them one by one yesterday, every newspaper clipping, everything related with Vice-President Morris Parker, pictures, stories, diaries. Then my father was murdered, Mandy. He was killed five years after his idol died,” Laila’s tears fell and her voice broke. “I-I never talked about this in the past. My father was murdered twenty years ago, Mandy.”     Hearing this, Mandy’s eyes got bigger. This must be the reason why Laila is behaving like this. “So you think that your father’s murder has something to do with Vice-President Morris Parker’s death?”     “Why not? He has started his private investigation himself without any protection. If only you saw his box, you would be able to connect the dots. Mandy, this case is really dangerous. If they did not spare all the people involved in this case, why would they spare us? I don’t want to die, Mandy, not yet.” Laila was shaking.     Mandy hugged her tightly.     “Laila, I understand what you feel. You think that your dad died because of this man. However, I am not ready to give up on this fight yet. If you want, give me your father’s treasure box. I will continue the investigation myself. You can have another case instead of this.”     Laila stopped shaking, but she continued crying. Silently, she let out the fear that she has been suppressing inside since she researched about the case. She has suppressed all of these while she was inside their house, afraid that Jordan will notice her reactions. Now that Mandy is here, she is free to let these out and behave like herself. At least she understands, and she is able to handle it. If she behaves like this in front of Jordan, he might panic. He has never seen her behave like this. Thank God he went to work early this morning.
