Chapter 13 - A Thief or An Enemy?

585 Words
Mandy took the case folder and went home. She was so concerned about Laila that she sent her home with her car before going to her own home. Her house is located in a subdivision almost an hour away from her office.     Tired because of the long hours of driving and comforting Laila, she just left her bag at the library near her office on the first floor and went straight to her bedroom on the second floor. I’ll just lie down a bit before changing my clothes, she thought and slump her body on the bed. Right after lying there, she closed her eyes and fell asleep.     Bow-wow, bow-wow! Bow-wow, bow-wow!     The dog has been barking incessantly. Automatically, Mandy got up from her bed and stood near her window to see what’s going on. Her eyes grew big. Her dog is barking while facing the main door. What’s going on below? Suddenly, she remembered that she did not lock her main door due to exhaustion. Comfortable on the safety of her own home, she just put her bag in the library and went to bed.     Alarmed, she got her cellphone on the table and dialled the number on the guard house in the entrance of her subdivision.     “Someone help me, please. Someone seems to have entered my house tonight,” she is shaking out of fear.     “A guard is roaming in your area tonight. I’ll call him,” the man on the other line assured her.     “Make it fast, please,” Mandy begged. Then she turned off her cellphone. She went to her dresser, opened her secret drawer and got her gun. She made sure that it was loaded. With her gun on her hand, she slowly headed to the door. Slowly, she opened the door and tiptoed on the ladder to the first floor.     To her surprise, she saw a man in a mask looking for something inside her bag in the library. When he found what he seems to be looking for, he lifted it. Mandy’s eyes grew bigger. It’s the case files!     “Freeze!” she automatically shouted and pointed her gun to him.     The man stopped on his tracks with his back on her.     “Put your hands up,” Mandy ordered. Thank God she learned how to shoot guns. She is quite a hitter, knowing how to shoot her target.     To her surprise, he sprinted. She automatically aimed for his feet and pulled the trigger.     Bang! Bang!     Damn! He was so fast that she wasn’t able to hit his legs. Crap! She automatically followed the man on the door. However, he only saw his back disappearing in the dark. This was the first time she was not able to hit her target. What happened to my hands, she thought.     “Ma’am, are you alright? We just heard gunshots from this place,” the security said and made sure that Mandy was alright. They just arrived.     Mandy looked at them. “Yes, the gunshots were mine. However, the thief ran away,” she said.     The two security guards looked ashamed. “We’re sorry, we’re late, Atty. Mandy.”     “It’s alright. The events are too fast. I just called your base then went down and saw the thief getting something in my bag.” Suddenly, she remembered the case files. Crap! Whatever happened to it?
