NORA WATCHED MATT TALKING to his brother, Jay, over the phone, and envied the easy camaraderie between the two. She had never had such an open and warm relationship with anyone in her family.
The conversation with his brother relaxed Matt. He had been tensed and furious before. She had felt his tension. The man was hopping mad, and all that made her nervous as well. However, Matt slowly came back to something close to his usual peaceful self.
Matt had surprised Nora a second time that day when he called his mother in her presence. She had assumed that he would leave the room so that she couldn’t hear his explanations.
