looking for a chance

Freddy POV I was worried about what Kylie would think to our home, well that's what I hope it will become. Seeing how their pack lands were has impressed me, and seeing how they treated each other, like family, gave me hope that I could help our people to become the same. We had talked a lot about what sort of home we wanted and how we could help, but I didn't have the stomach to tell her how desolate this place had become. Seeing in her eyes and feeling her disappointment through our bond even though she tried to hide it made my heart hurt. Fear crept into me. I was scared she would finally realise she was worth more than me and run away from here, from me. I know deep down that my amazing mate isn't like that and would stand with me forever and I know I'm the most selfish when I say that is where I want her, I can't let her go. We had discussed about his shitty people still being here. We knew it was a possibility that he would leave someone here and I'd give them a chance to start over but when they made their intentions clear, I knew there was no saving them and I refused to try. Achlys had seeped in deep, filling them with darkness, and there was no light that could break through. Knowing Achlys had imprisoned everyone here, I knew he would throw them into the dungeons. I reassured the girls with Kylie, but they also need to be prepared for what we might find. Opening the dungeon doors wide, the smell almost knocked me off my feet. It was the most horrible place imaginable, and he was cruel enough to put our whole coven down here. These are our people and are supposed to be able to rely, confide, and feel safe with their king. A king is supposed to put their people first, and I don't know how Achlys has managed to reign for so long. We make our way down to the dungeons, and my heart breaks at the sight. The cells are cramped with ill looking people, paler than usual, thin and dirty. We vampires can survive on food and it's rare that we feed on the vein, drinking blood helps heal us faster if we are injured or gives a boost to our speed and strength but I can see non of them had been given either. Hungry cries from children can be heard, and I wanted nothing more than to get them out here now. I was relieved when they started leaving after reassuring them that Achlys was dead. We moved cell to cell before we got to the last one, filled with women and children. I'm proud to say the older children and women with more strength slowly moved to the front of the others, protecting them the best they could given the circumstances. I won't lie and say I wasn't on edge and ready to protect my mate at the blink of an eye when she ran into a cell full of strangers. Before she could get a young girl laid on the floor a woman threw herself on her knees, begging Kylie not to hurt her children, and I felt Kylies heartbreak through our mate bond. She got down on the floor and put her arms around the sobbing woman. My mate truly is an amazingly beautiful soul. She is what has been missing from our clan all these years. We got everyone out and headed to the main house. Everyone is following us into the massive and empty dining room. Apparently, this room was always filled with wonderful smells and nothing but laughter. I'm only going off what I've heard because it's never been that way from me being here, but I intend to get it that way again. My people deserve it. "Love, I'm going to see what food there is. Which way to the kitchen? " Kylie asked, but Layla spoke before I got the chance."we will show you, we can help, " and both pulled my smiling mate away by her hands. 'If you need any help, beautiful give me a shout,' I say in our link with a chuckle 'always.' she giggled back. I could see the joy radiate off her just helping our people, I already know she will make a great queen. If I'm being honest I didn't want anything to do with being king, I would have been happy to make a life elsewhere far from here but it was my Kylie that changed that and she was right I would never have forgiven myself if this kingdom ended up being ruled by another cruel, self-centred king. The best way to stop that from happening is to take my birthright and become a king my people deserve.
