Chapter 12: Orders

1467 Words
“Lady Kira, are you sure that you are going to compete in the yearly examination?” Auntie Herma asked worriedly. It’s not that she was looking down on her, but she didn’t want her to get hurt, just like what happened when she was 12. It was hard for her to recover from that humiliation. It took Madam a lot of time to make Kira smile again. Now that Madam’s gone, what are they going to do if the same thing happens again? Bariston looked worried as well. He knew that Lady Kira had changed and she had planned on her own. He still could remember that calm look she had when they were in the dungeon, looking at the sentinels. He was very terrified when he saw it but there was not a change in Lady Kira’s face. He even had this crazy thought that she must have gone there before. But it’s only a ridiculous idea. How could Lady Kira have been there before? Kira placed the brush down and sighed before she looked at them. “Auntie Herma, Bariston, do you know the line ‘borrowing someone else's knife to kill?” Bariston shook his head. “Lady Kira, what does that mean?” Kira smiled. She had already anticipated that something would definitely happen on the day of the examination. Valerie won’t let it pass. She will so do something that will damage her reputation since her plan failed. “Bariston, what do you think of Franz Devon?” she asked softly. Bariston thought for a while and replied, “Lady Kira, Franz Devon is a guard stationed at the front of the palace gate. Although he is young, he had already achieved 2nd rank Wolf. But…” he didn’t know if he would continue or not. “Continue…” Kira ordered. Bariston looked hesitantly at Auntie Herma, who had the same expression as him. But when she nodded, he decided to continue, “But rumors are circulating that Lady Kira is madly in love with Franz Devon.” “Do you believe those rumors, Bariston?” Kira flashed a smile at him. But Bariston didn’t know why he felt shivers when he saw that smile. It’s like there’s a deep meaning behind that smile. “Do you?” she repeated when Bariston didn’t reply. After hearing her repeating the question, Bariston kneeled and bowed his head. “No, Lady Kira. This guard of yours knows that it’s unlike of you to be in love with that lowly guard. I hope Lady Kira won’t get mad at those nonsense rumors.” Kira laughed softly, “Don’t be too serious, Bariston. I’m just casually asking. You should stand up. No need for you to kneel.” Kira stood up from her seat and walked near the big window in her room. She could see outside the shining sun starting to set. The street lights were starting to light slowly, preparing for the darkness to arrive. Bariston and Auntie Herma followed her and watched her back, confused, as to what their lady was thinking. Ever since the time she woke up, she had changed a lot. “Auntie Herma, Bariston, perhaps it was like this in the past. What the rumors were saying about me was indeed true.” Kira sighed deeply but didn’t move her gaze. Auntie Herma and Bariston looked at her with shock, their eyes widened while their lips gasped. Although they had seen how Lady Kira clinged to that guard, they didn’t believe in those rumors. For them, if their lady didn’t say it personally, those rumors were not true. But now that she had confessed it personally, they didn’t know what to say. They were left speechless. When Kira didn’t hear their response, she continued, “But after falling into the water, I finally saw the reality. The reality that I always wanted to avoid because I wanted to stay in my own fantasy. " Her fantasy that she tried so hard to keep, but in the end, this fantasy destroyed her reality and tortured her endlessly. Her hand tightened as she grabbed her sleeves. Those memories of him in the past. How she blindly trusted him and how he betrayed her. She will never forget that. ‘Franz Devon, I won’t let you hurt me again!’ “Auntie Herma,” she called to her softly. Auntie Herma broke into reverie when she heard her name. “Yes, Lady Kira?” Kira turned around and faced them. The setting sun shone brightly at her back, making her more dazzling and beautiful to look at. It’s like the sun is making a halo on her, making her like a goddess. “Please gather all the list of nobles and officials that will be present at that time. Including the guests from the different castles and how many people were invited for that examination.” Auntie Herma nodded without question. It was her first time seeing her serious expression while commanding orders. She knew instantly that this time, her lady could handle herself. She won’t get bullied again, just like what happened in the past. ‘Madam, Lady Kira has really changed. You don’t have to worry about her now. You can now proceed in the afterlife peacefully.’ she tearfully thought as she walked out of the room. Left in the room were Bariston and Kira. Bariston stood silently, waiting for her orders. “Bariston..” Kira said after a while. “Yes, Lady Kira? What orders do you want this servant to make?” he replied politely. “I want you to spy on Franz Devon secretly. Report to me the people he meets, especially the ones he met secretly. If he ever met with Morgana or Valerie, listen to their conversation and their plans. I’m sure they will definitely use him against me.” she ordered seriously. In her past life, in the eyes of everyone, Valerie became the most outstanding while she became the most foolish. She was begging her father for her to attend that event even if she was not participating. It was for the sole reason that she wanted to see Franz and to witness his greatness during the examination. Her father disagreed but Valerie talked to him privately, and she finally agreed to attend. She was so thankful to Valerie during that time and saw her as her guardian angel. How foolish of her to think that! When she arrived at the event, she heard that Franz would like the girl who would paint a chrysanthemum flower during the competition. She was so happy when she heard that and, without her father’s knowledge, she joined the competition and painted the chrysanthemum flower in front of everyone. When she finally finished, she happily presented it to her father but she saw the anger in his eyes. Later, she was then punished heavily for that. She found out that a chrysanthemum flower represents death. In their castle, everyone would offer this flower to the coffin of the one who was on the brink of death. Usually, this offering is for the seniors of the family. So, when she painted that flower during that event, it was a big slap on the alpha’s face. Her father was the senior in their family, so it’s like she was wishing for her father to die by painting that in front of the crowd. It was too late for her to know that. Because, in the past, she didn’t know anything. She didn’t learn anything at all. That’s why she was so foolish to listen to those words without thinking of the consequences. She was sure that Valerie planned to spread the word that Franz liked chrysanthemum flowers. Valerie knew her feelings for Franz before and she used that as an advantage to make her look like a fool. But now, she will not let that happen again. Let’s see what Valerie wanted to do this time. She hoped that it would not be the same as in the past. How boring would that be? Bariston saw the slight smirk on his lady’s face. It caused him to understand that his lady might already have a plan for the examination. All he needed to do was to listen and carry out the orders from her. “I won’t disappoint you, Lady Kira,” he vowed, and then transformed into his wolf form. Before he jumped out, Kira spoke once more. “And Bariston…” Kira said softly, “investigate Lawrence Devon. I want to know everything about him.” “Devon…. Is he related to Franz’s?…” he asked surprisingly. Kira smiled deviously and answered, “He is Franz Devon’s older brother. Or should I say his secret twin brother…"
