OUT OF MIND
The next morning, Kathy hurried down the stairs after receiving a text from Carlson that he'd be leaving for France in a few days.
“Heading somewhere?” Her nanny asked, looking skeptically at her. “Oh nanny, not you, I'm just going to go shopping and get a few things, then I'll be back home before you even know it.”
“Whatever it is you're planning or thinking, I hope you don't get hurt.” She said as Kathy nodded and walked out of the house.
A few hours later, she held the bags containing brand-new dresses, shoes and jewelry of lesser qualities with a smile on her face.
For now, he'll think she's poor and then later she'll reveal the truth to him.” She thought as she got into the car.
As the driver drove the car, she noticed him following another route as her heart skipped. “This isn't the route home, what are you doing?” She asked, her voice going an octave higher.
“That car has been following us.I need to get you to a more busy place so we can easily mix up.” He replied as she gasped.
She hadn't even noticed that a car had been following her for this long.
“Drive faster, it's getting closer to us, drive __” two gunshots skyrocketed into the air as her car screeched, the driver almost losing the wheel, but he held on tightly as the car drove past them with speed.
“What was that? Why are they after me?” She asked, her body vibrating rapidly as her driver got down from the car.
He made a few calls before getting into the car. “I'll take you home right now.” He said and started the ignition.
“What was that about?” Kathy asked as she marched into Kyle's home office. He lifted his head from the laptop and smiled at her.
“What will happen to you if you do not go out with a guard?” He replied calmly as she gasped. “I don't understand, you had those guys follow me?”
“I'm glad you understand, you didn't think they were really after you, did you?” He asked, a little smile playing around his lips.
“Of course I thought so, I almost died right there, and was it all a joke?”
“You didn't die Kathy, come off it and, besides, they were following my orders so they couldn't have hurt you.” She blew out air as she laughed dryly.
“So what's the plan? You usually have a plan ready, so tell me.”
“We're sending you on a trip or whatever, it's no longer safe staying here.”
“And why's that?”
“You'll find it difficult to understand, just know that it's not safe for you to stay out here anymore, we'll get you to a safe place.”
“Can I choose a place for the vacation? Can I order my tickets and all?” She asked.
“Of course you can, do not choose France.” She chuckled before walking out.
Three days later, Kathy walked down the stairs with her driver pulling her luggage into the car. “I'm not taking a car, remember?” She said to Kelvin and pouted at his lips.
“I'm going to miss you.” He said, pulling her into his arms as she chuckled. “And you act like you don't care when you really do care.” He scoffed.
“You remain the princess in this house, so I'll definitely miss you.” Kelly was the next to hug her and finally Kyle.
As she sat inside the cab heading to Carlson's hotel, her heart was beating rapidly. She'd been in contact with Carlson for the past few days, and they'd planned their exit properly.
Before her brothers knew what was happening, she'd be long gone and there'll be nothing they'd do about it.
She got out of the cab and pulled her luggage. As she walked towards Carlson's room, her mind went back to the night she agreed to help him out in securing his inheritance. What if she's doing a wrong thing? What if__
“Kathy!” Carlson called, walking briskly to hug her as she smiled. “Hi, I'm all set, we should get going.”
“Yeah, my rental car is ready.” She followed him back down the stairs and into the car as they zoomed off.
All through the flight, she kept dozing off and on.
“Come on, we're here already.” Carlson said as she jerked awake. “That was quite a long flight.” She muttered under her breath as he smiled and pulled her gently along with him.
“So is there something I should know about your family? Any ritual, you know?”
“I've got an over-inquisitive granny. Do not spend much time with her. She's way too old for gossips.” She furrowed her brows at the tone of his voice.
“It's alright,I don't plan on talking non-stop.” They got into the car sent to pick him up as he relaxed, smiling at himself. Just then, his phone rang and he picked up immediately.
“Hey mom, yeah we're almost home. I know you can't wait to see her.” He said as Kathy's stomach grew warm.
“Your mom?” She asked.
“Yeah, she can't wait to see you.” He replied as she chuckled. “You must have a good relationship with her.”
“Yeah I do, come on, we're here.” He said as the car drove through the gates of the huge mansion in Monaco.
“Wow, it's so huge,” she muttered.
“Yeah right, nothing like you've ever seen before.” He said as she rolled her eyes.
“Let's just go in, I'm tired.” She said as she recalled she'd not given her brothers a call. To them, she was heading to Italy.
As they walked into the house, everyone was seated, eating dinner and all eyes turned to look at them as Carlson smiled.
“Good day everyone, mom.” He said as Viktor, his cousin, raised his brows.
“You brought a new toy?” He asked.
“You all meet my fiancé, Katherine.” He said as a deafening silence covered the entire place.
“You must be joking, right? What fiancé, what happened to Helena?” Mary's aunt, as the luggage fell from Kathy's hands.
