Aura Senka’s P.O.V
Next week I’ll be twenty one years old and with that comes a lot of responsibility. In our training when we reach this age we have a rite of passage that we must do in order to continue, for me it’s going out into the world and finding something to bring back to life, whether it be an animal, human or plant, we must revive something using our powers. When my brother turned twenty one he had to sit and wait to see if he could get a vision about the future, it took almost two months for his power to kick in and when it did he saw the huge storm that was coming. Thankfully it gave us time to prepare for it because for us as elves it was really dangerous, mainly due to the fact that a lot of elves still think and live by the old ways, so some live in trees and others in the ground, which is also how we hide. I’m glad that our tribe doesn't do that and most have left the old ways behind, opting to live in houses that are hidden by nature and if someone ever comes that isn’t welcome or is unknown to us then nature protects us. The trees uproot and hide our homes, the bushes grow so that we are covered and no one ever sees us otherwise they would probably freak out and run away, maybe even tell someone what they saw and we don’t want to be hunted down and killed, so we always have to be careful. I don’t know how long I was going to be out there, waiting for something to revive, but I knew that I wasn’t ready for it, not by a long shot. Even just trying to heal someone drained me, so bringing someone or something back from the dead was going to completely incapacitate me, but thankfully I still had time before I needed to do it. Today I was doing my usual routine of watching Cheyenne and making sure that she was safe, but I still didn’t know why. I mean she was outside with her whole troop, training like they normally did and I could tell straight away that she was not only a very strong woman, but she was also one that could hold her own. Hell, I was even a little scared of her, but I somehow knew that she would never try to hurt me. I had been watching for a few hours and training had finally stopped, so I waited and watched everyone go inside, but Cheyenne stayed outside, which was weird. I kept a close eye on her and it looked like she was looking into the woods at something.
“I don’t know who or what you are, but I mean you no harm, so I am giving you a chance to leave. If I need you I think you will know somehow and come find me, so you need to get going before anyone sees you.” Cheyenne said in a voice barely above a whisper and I realised then that she was speaking to me. Wait, does she know of us or does she just have a feeling like I do? I waited a few seconds, speechless about being spoken to before I had revealed myself and watched her walk into the house without looking back.I knew I needed to get out of here before the guards came because they would immediately hunt me down, thinking I was a rogue or something, so I got out of there as fast as I could. When I returned home my mom put me straight to training with my powers and I was finally able to bring something back to life, but it left me feeling drained. It was a deer that had only just given birth, but when I got there the birth had been too hard on her and although the baby lived, the mother died. I knew that I had to help the mother, so I got to work on trying to bring her back and after ten minutes of trying I was finally able to do it. I was overcome with emotions when the mother deer stood up and walked over to her baby, so much so that tears streamed down my cheeks with happiness. I did that, I brought her back to life so she could be a mom to her baby, I thought to myself. I knew there and then that I needed to know everything I could about these healing powers, so I asked my mom for everything she had and she gave me some of her personal books. I had read everything from the training, but these books were special, so I held my hand over the cover and absorbed everything they had to say.
“Aura, I am so proud of you and how well you have been doing with your training. You are just like your brother, a fast learner, but you must remember to be careful. If anyone finds out about your healing powers they will try to capture you and use you for their personal gain. Never trust anyone that suddenly wants to learn about you. Promise me that you will be careful.” My mother, Pandora, said and I quickly nodded, knowing that she was right.we had to be careful about who we showed our powers to because there was an elder elf called Callie and she had the gift of second sight, but someone found out about it and one day she was captured. The higher up elves tried everything to get her back, but she was used for her powers and when she refused to tell them what she saw she was sold on to another in the hopes they could make her talk. By the time we managed to find her it was too late and she ended up dying a painful death because she wouldn’t tell them what she had seen. The ones that found her tried to heal her, but the damage had already been done and we all felt it when she died. After that we were all told to never reveal our powers to anyone, so we hide when others are around.
“Now, don’t forget that your brother will be joining us later as well, so don’t be late.” My mother said, confusing me. Later? What was happening later? I thought to myself and then it hit me. s**t, it’s a full moon. All of us gather during the full moon because all the werewolves and lycans s**t and run during this time, so we go high up into the trees and hide, while they shift and run. When they shift for the first time some can end up turning rogue because they are unable to control their wolves, so we have to hide in case they attack us. Last time we had a full moon my brother was away and the time before that my father was away, so this will be the first time we will all be together to do this.
“Yeah, I know, I won’t be late, but I have to watch Cheyenne again before I come back.” I said, hugging her before I went back to Cheyenne. I settled in the forest, watching her train the warriors outside again and this time she had them doing warm ups and sparring, then when it was over everyone went back inside, but Cheyenne didn’t. She stayed outside again, looking into the forest and I could have sworn that she looked right at me this time, but instead of saying something or coming closer, she went inside. I stood baffled for a few seconds before leaving to come back home and start my training again, but when I got there my mother was waiting for me.
“Hey mom, what are we doing in training today?” I asked, but she shook her head.
“Aura Senka, there is no more training. You have learned everything that you needed to know and your birthday is in two weeks, so there is no more I can teach you. Once you turn of age you will go to her and watch over her. You may show yourself to her, but only if you wish to do so.” My mom replied, making me tense up.
“I think she already knows about me, mom. Earlier when I was watching her before I came back for training she sensed me and said I should leave before the others saw me. She must have been talking to me because there was no one else around and just now when I was watching her I could have sworn that she looked right at me.” I said, hoping that she could give me some advice on what to do.
“Well then, she won’t be so freaked out when you show yourself to her, then will she. Sometimes wolves can sense others around them before they even see them and the fact that you're her protector means that she will be able to sense you even more so. She senses you, but she just doesn’t know who or what you are just yet and soon she will know everything.” My mom replied, smiling.
“But mom…..” I started to say, but my mom held her hand up stopping me from talking.
“Don’t but mom me, you know your orders, young lady and you will fulfil them as you were chosen to do so. Now go get your rest and I will see you once you come back from watching over her again. Do as you’re told Aura and do not look at me like that or I will give you a reason to be upset. Do I make myself clear?” My mom said, making me sigh. I nodded and walked away, hating my mothers wrath. She could be vicious at times, especially when protecting her family or when it came to her duties and I would rather not feel her wrath. All the female elves have a temper and their mates just put up with it out of responsibility and love, but I want a mate that will love me for me, even if its human, werebear, werewolf or werecat, I don’t care as long as they are honest with me, loyal and faithful. I want someone that will look at me like I’m the only other person in the room, but I have yet to find that in someone, not even the male elves around here and right now I don’t care because I’m not ready or worried about finding a mate just yet. What I’m worried about is me turning twenty one and having to heal something before I’m fully allowed to be Cheyenne’s protector. I think I’m ready now, but in my world I have to wait until I’m twenty one to prove myself worthy. Weird, I know, but that is part of the old ways and will never be changed because it protects the people we are charged with.
Pandora’s (Aura’s mom) P.O.V
I knew that my daughter thought herself ready and that she was wanting to get out there and prove herself, but I wasn’t. I had plenty of sons that had gone their own way to be protectors, but Aura was my only daughter and I didn’t want her to leave as well. I wanted her to learn as much as she could before she comes of age. I wanted her to live her life a little and find her love, but the males around here are so stupid. They only go by the old ways, believing that only the males should be protectors and that females should stay home. Thankfully I found a good one and her father, Seth, isn’t like that. He wants her to learn as much as she can and we all know tonight is the full moon, so she has to be careful. I just hope that she’s back in time before the new ones shift because they can either die during the transformation or they can go rogue and that’s very bad. I looked up at the sky and saw that the sun was slowly starting to set, making the sky turn all different colours of light purple, orange, yellow and a little red, causing a breathtakingly beautiful scene. We all started to climb the trees, four elves to each tree, so that the branches and limbs wouldn’t break with our weight. Elves had super hearing, so not only could we hear the wolves and lycan howling and roaring, but we could also hear the humans around us locking their doors and windows. This happens every full moon and many young wolves would come of age and go through their first shift, so we could also hear their cries of help and screams of pain as they went through it. They would scream for mercy for quite a bit and then they would howl when the transformation was complete. I had just settled onto my branch when Aura suddenly jumped up into the tree and startled all of us.
“You’re late, Aura. You could have been hurt if you were any later. You need to be more careful.” I whispered/yelled at my daughter and she quickly nodded.
“Sorry, I was caught up watching Cheyenne and making sure she was alright.” Aura replied and I knew that I shouldn’t have been mad because she was only doing her duty, but I was still worried about her and that would never change. Aura settled in on the branch opposite me and we all listened intently, knowing not to leave the safety of the trees, as the first scream rang out through the forest and almost an hour later the first howl was heard. The sounds echoed all around us as we were in the middle of five different packs, but after a few hours it all went dead quiet and then the howling started, signalling the first run of the night. The new wolves had successfully shifted and now it was their time to run with the pack. This was when we had to hold on for dear life or the rumbling of them running would shake us out of the trees.
