Chapter Eight

Waking up the following day, she scrambled out of bed and got dressed before sitting on her bed and carefully unwrapping her hand, flexing her fingers as she looked at her completely healed hand in surprise. ‘Perk of being a werewolf, even an Omega one’ she muttered to herself before hopping off the bed and making her way downstairs where her mother was sat drinking coffee. Looking up at the teenager, her mother gave her a worried look, ‘are you OK sweetie?’ she asked hurriedly, setting her cup down and grabbing the youngster’s hand to examine it, ‘I came in when I got home, Mrs Carter told me what happened, but you were fast asleep so I left you.’ Skylar smiled, ‘I'm fine mum, it wasn’t that deep, see, it’s healed already, it was just the Future Alpha and Mrs Carter being over protective’ she replied. Her mother raised an eyebrow at her words, ‘Future Alpha? Why was he with you?’ she probed with a knowing look. Skylar laughed, ‘nothing like that mum, we are just friends’ she replied as she removed her hand from her mother’s grasp and went to pour herself a cup of coffee. ‘And you didn’t feel the need to tell me that our future Alpha has made friends with you?’ her mother accused, giving her daughter a stern look. Skylar shrugged, ‘I didn’t think it was that big a deal, it’s fairly recent and I still don’t know why he wants to be my friend’ she added sullenly. The older Omega gave her a sympathetic look, ‘maybe he just sees how awesome you are?’ she offered as Skylar rolled her eyes. ‘Mum, you are totally biased, I am not awesome, I'm one of the lowest ranked members of the pack! I'm not even a cool healer like you’ she replied, trying to keep the anger that was bubbling at the thought, out of her voice. Her mother shook her head in amusement, ‘if you say so Sweetie’ she said before returning to her coffee. Taking a seat across from her, Skylar sipped on her own drink, her mind wandering as the allowed the hot liquid to burn down her throat. Two Oceanic blue eyes flashing in front of her, taunting her, shaking her head, Skylar tried to rid her mind of the images, unable to comprehend why the pretty brunette was plaguing her thoughts. As the pair finished up their drinks, they placed their mugs in the sink before hurrying out of the front door, jumping in the car and setting off toward the pack house. Pulling up outside, Skylar shouted a hurried goodbye to her mother as she ran up the stairs, waving to the guards and high tailing it into the kitchen where the other Omega’s were already hard at work. ‘Skylar!’ Mrs Carter admonished, bustling over to her, ‘I didn’t expect to see you here this morning, I have already covered your shift, you should be resting your hand’ Skylar waved her healed hand in front of her impatiently, ‘all healed Mrs Carter’ she replied. Sighing heavily, the old woman pushed the teenager toward the kitchen table, ‘go and sit down, I make you some breakfast’ she said, ignoring the youngsters protests. Dropping into a seat with a huff, Skylar was soon stuffing her face with pancakes as everyone chatted around her, getting breakfast ready for the pack members. ‘Mrs Carter, I have been asked . . ‘ came a soft voice behind her which tailed off as Skylar turned in her seat to make immediate eye contact with the blue eyes that had haunted her all night. ‘Yes Harper dear? What do you need?’ Mrs Carter called from the stove. ‘Oh um, dad asked if you have any of your special strawberry jam left, if so could we have some with breakfast this morning’ Harper replied, dragging her eyes from the Omega’s, her cheeks pink. ‘Of course dear, tell the Alpha I have a jar left that I kept just for him, I shall make sure it is on his table waiting’ the beaming woman replied. Nodding quickly, Harper turned on her heel and almost ran from the room leaving Skylar feeling slightly dejected. ‘Get a hold of yourself girl’ she muttered under her breath, ‘you are not even friends’ but she still couldn’t eradicate the small slice of hurt she felt at Jackson’s sister running away. Finishing her meal, Skylar placed her place into the dishwasher, throwing her bag onto her back as Mrs Carter pushed her lunch box into her hands with a motherly smile. Hugging the Omega quickly, Skylar left the kitchen and made her way outside, she was in no hurry today so enjoyed a leisurely walk, stopping to chat to the guards for a few minutes before the deep velvet voice of Jackson echoed behind her. ‘You are out early’ he mused, walking over to her and slinging his arm around her shoulders. ‘Yeah, Mrs Carter covered my shift because she thought I'd still need time to heal’ Skylar admitted. ‘Talking of which, how is the injury?’ Jackson asked, his eyes trailing down to her unbandaged hand. ‘All healed, see?’ the Omega replied, holding it up so the Alpha could inspect it. A look of relief crossed his face, ‘I felt really guilty all night’ he muttered, blushing, ‘I thought I really hurt you.’ Skylar laughed, ‘I may be an Omega but I'm still a werewolf Jack, a small cut in my hand isn’t going to kill me’ she teased. Tightening his arm around her shoulders, Jackson steered the teenager toward his car, opening the door and helping her slide in, Skylar not even bothering to argue with him. Slipping behind the wheel, Jackson set off for school, turning up the radio as they sang badly along to the music. Pulling up at school, Skylar gave Jackson a smile, ‘thank you for the ride Jack’ she said softly before clambering out and heading into the building, giving him a wave over her shoulder as Taylor walked up beside him. Heading inside, she dropped her books off at her locker before deciding to make a quick stop in the girls bathroom, pushing open the door, she entered one of the stalls and did her business. As she sorted out her clothes, she heard the door to the bathroom open, the sound of girl’s muttering quietly before the stall doors beside her opened and closed. Unlocking her own door, Skylar stepped out of her stall and walked over to the sinks to wash her hands, allowing the water to rinse the soap from her palms, she heard the creak of the stall door behind her, before she could look up something covered her face and a punch connected with her ribs causing her to cry out in pain. Doubling over, a knee made contact with her nose as fists rained down on her torso forcing her to the floor. Kicks peppered her body, Skylar holding up her hands to try and protect her head from the attack. Suddenly she could feel a breath against her neck, the over powering smell of cheap perfume invading her senses. ‘Stay away from Jackson Omega or next time we won’t be so friendly’ a female’s voice hissed, before the person stood up again and gave her a final kick to her back. Laying on the floor, whimpering, Skylar heard the bathroom door swing open and then close again. Reaching up with shaking hands, she pulled the cover from her face, finding that is was a cheap cream scarf that they had wrapped around her face, the fabric already crimson in places from her blood. Using the basin, the Omega pulled her battered body up, her legs shaking underneath her as she stared into the mirror that hung above the sinks. Her bruised and b****y face looked back at her, one of her eyes was already swollen shut, her lip was also split and dripping blood. Turning on the tap, Skylar cupped her trembling hands under the cold water and splashed it on her face, trying to remove some of the blood as she winced as her fingers made contact with her injuries. Outside she heard the bell for first period sound, slumping back to the floor, she waited until the sounds of running footsteps stilled before clambering back to her feet and making her way out into the hallway. Her eyes darting around fearfully, she took in the empty corridor and hobbled her way to her locker, grabbing her stuff, she slammed the door shut and painfully made her way to the front door, exiting the school building and making her way off of the grounds. Limping heavily, Skylar managed to drag herself down the road from the school to the nearby woods, entering the tree line, she made her way into the protective canopy until she was sure she would not be seen or heard. Finally, when she was lost within the surrounding foliage, the teenager fell to her knees in the soft grass and cried, laying her battered body against the cool ground, Skylar let out the pain of her attack, crying until there were no more tears to shed.
