Skylar is the fifteen-year-old daughter of Omega parents, her mother is a well-respected nurse, her father died after an attack on the pack years ago.

Skylar would not be sixteen for six months, so is yet to get her wolf, but with two Omega parents everyone already knew that she would be another Omega so she was already treated like one. She has to work in the pack kitchens each morning before school where she is treated as the lowest of the low due to her status.

Every morning she goes to the pack house with her mother and cooks breakfast with the other Omega’s, serving the pack whilst her mother works in the clinic. She then has to catch the school bus to their local high school, one of the few older werewolves who had to do this as most of the pack teenagers had their own cars or were friends with one of the stronger teens who had one and caught a lift.

A chance encounter with the future Alpha suddenly turns the she-wolf’s life upside down, enemies appear around her, threatened by her new found status, as well as confusion and desire toward someone she never expected.

Trying to battle High school is hard enough, but it becomes one hundred times worse when you are thrust into a spotlight you never wanted to stand under.

Chapter One - Skylar
Rolling out of bed Skylar groaned as the obnoxious noise of her alarm screamed into the dawn telling her it was 5am and time to get up. Dragging herself from between the sheets, she winced as her feet touched the cold floor boards of her room. Pulling on her jeans and a faded rock band t’shirt, she ran a brush through her long black hair, inherited from her father, tying it up in a lose braid that swung down her back, before grabbing her toothbrush and making her way down the hall to the bathroom to brush her teeth. Staring into the mirror, she took in her appearance, stopping momentarily at her miss matched eyes, one blue, one green that doctor’s had been unable to explain. Once ready, Skylar stomped down the passage and into the kitchen to see her mother already at the table, just draining the last dregs of her coffee from the ‘world’s greatest mum’ mug that Skylar had bought her for mother’s day when she was just a pup. ‘Hey sweetie, you ready to go? Do you need some breakfast first?’ her mother asked with a smile as Skylar just shook her head negatively. ‘No, it’s OK, I'll eat at the pack house’ she replied, returning the older woman’s smile, trying to put as much happiness behind it as possible as her mother nodded and stood up, swilling her mug under the tap before grabbing the keys to their car and leading the way outside, Skylar grabbing her jacket as she walked out of the door, shutting it carefully behind her. Skylar and her mother were part of the Night Shade pack, her mother and father were both Omega’s which meant that they were the lowest ranks, destined to serve the higher members. Skylar’s mother was actually a skilled nurse so she received more respect than other Omega’s and worked in the pack clinic, Skylar’s father had been killed in a raid when she was just a year old, she had no memory of him other than the photo’s showing a six foot three inch tall man with green eyes and black hair that were dotted around their small bungalow. Her mother, a brunette with deep brown eyes, was a petite five foot four inches, small for a werewolf but not uncommon among the Omega’s. Skylar had ended up between the two of them height wise, measuring five foot eight inches, her tanned complexion was flawless, almost mediterranean in appearance which was surprising as both her parents had fair skin. Her mother had always said that it must have been passed down through the generations somewhere. Sliding into the passenger seat, Skylar let out a groan as she leaned against the car’s cool glass window, wishing she was back in her bed like every other fifteen year old in the pack. Driving along, her mother turned on the radio and started to sing along to the songs, nudging Skylar repeatedly until the teenager broke into a reluctant grin and joined in, the two of them belting out the words as they drove the two miles to the pack house. As Omega’s, their house was at the edge of the territory, high ranking mated wolves had extravagant homes built around the pack house, then all the pack children once they turned sixteen and got their wolves, lived in the pack house with the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and their families. Once outside the pack, Skylar gave her mum a quick kiss on the cheek before opening the door, grabbing her wrist, her mother stopped her, giving her a pleading look as Skylar met her gaze, ‘please try not to let that tongue of yours get you into trouble today sweetie’ she said softly. Sighing, Skylar nodded, ‘I'll try mum, but it’s pretty hard when everyone in this pack is such an a*s’ she replied grudgingly. Slipping out of the car, she gave her mother a small wave before heading inside the front door, greeting the two guards as she passed. ‘Hey Tobias, Hey Vinnie, you got early shift today huh?’ she asked with a smile as the pair grinned back at her. ‘Yep, Alpha gives us all the best jobs’ Tobias replied rolling his eyes as the teenager chuckled. ‘You and me both man, you and me both’ she replied before walking between them and into the kitchen. ‘Skylar! Good morning’ came the kindly voice of Mrs Carter, the head chef of the pack house, the highest ranking Omega other than Skylar’s own mother. ‘Hey Mrs Carter, where do you want me today?’ she replied as she shrugged off her jacket and hung it on the back of the pantry door, grabbing an apron and tying it around her waist. ‘Can you cut up the fruit for me please?’ Mrs Carter asked as Skylar nodded, making her way over to the unit where a pile of fresh fruit was, grabbing the heavy knife and started to cut oranges into segments. By six forty five, the breakfast was ready and the Omega’s filed out of the kitchen to place it onto the serving area of the dining hall. Once they had finished, the thundering of feet told them that the pack were descending upon them all, the smell of freshly fried sausages had obviously awoken the house. Hundreds of teenage werewolves entered the room, chatting and laughing as they grabbed plates and lined up to get their breakfast, the Omega’s filing out and back into the kitchen where they sat around the scrubbed wooden table, Mrs Carter placing pancakes, sausages and bacon in front of them as they all started to eat. ‘So are you ready for the new school year Sky?’ Mrs carter asked conversationally as Skylar nodded her head, unable to speak with the mouthful of sausage she had just forced into her mouth. Swallowing, she met the kindly woman’s gaze, ‘yeah, can’t wait for another year of being the schools punching bag’ she replied with a rueful smile. Mrs Carter pursed her lips, ‘you need to stand up for yourself young lady, just because you are an Omega doesn’t mean you have to lie down on the ground and let people wipe their feet on you’ she growled angrily. Skylar shrugged, ‘mum wants me to not cause trouble, and as an Omega, isn’t that where we sit? Under everyone else?’ she asked, trying to keep the bitterness out of her voice. The others around the table looked at her sympathetically, she was the only teenage Omega, they were all adults. ‘Sky, just because you might be an Omega doesn’t make you less worthy of respect than anyone else in this pack’ Ryan called down the table, the twenty two year old smiling at her as he reached for some more pancakes. ‘Just because we are not the strongest in the pack doesn’t mean we do not have worth, remember that. The Alpha doesn’t treat you badly doe he? Or the Luna, so why should anyone at your school be allowed to?’ he asked reasonably. Nodding silently, Skylar checked her watch, yelping as she jumped up realising that the bus would be leaving in ten minutes for school. Standing up with her, Mrs Carter hurried over to the pantry, grabbing the teenagers coat and a plastic tub that she thrust into the young girl’s hands. ‘Lunch’ she said simply to Skylars questioning look, ‘I know you tend to skip lunch at school to save money, take it and eat it’ she said gruffly as Skylar hugged her quickly. ‘Now go! Learn something!’ the Head Omega said, pushing the teenager toward the door. Sprinting out of the kitchen, Skylar raced through the foyer and out of the front door, shouting goodbye to the guards before running full pelt into a solid wall. Falling to the ground she looked up into the surprised face of Jackson, the muscular six foot four tower of godliness. His deep brown hair was swept back away from his face, his chocolate brown eyes staring down at her dumbfounded before his face cleared and he growled in annoyance. ‘Watch where you are going Omega’ he grumbled loudly as Skylar scrambled up off the floor, dusting herself off. ‘Watch where you are standing you great solid wall of idiocy’ she replied angrily, shoving his shoulder before setting off again at speed toward the waiting bus. A dozen steps later she found her self pulled to an abrupt stop, turning around she came face to face with Jackson’s furious features. ‘What did you call me mutt?’ he growled menacingly. Pulling herself from his grasp she snarled back, ‘I called you a wall of idiocy, thank you for proving me right’ she snapped back, ‘now stop harassing me, I have to catch the bus.’ spinning around again she sprinted up to the bus steps and threw herself into one of the back seats letting out a sigh of frustration. Suddenly the whole bus went silent, looking up, Skylar’s eyes met with Jackson’s as he made his way to the back of the bus and sat down next to her. Letting out a groan, Skylar rolled her eyes, ‘what do you want now?’ she grumbled, glaring at him. ‘You are very disrespectful’ Jackson replied, his eyes studying her. ‘I wasn’t aware that you had done anything to command respect’ she replied coolly, ‘being born privileged doesn’t make you worth respecting’ she added. Jackson chuckled, ‘I like you’ he murmured as the bus set off, ‘you are different to the other girls here.’ ‘Why are you on the bus? You have a very expensive extension for your male parts parked right outside the pack house, why are you slumming it with the lowest ranks today?’ Skylar asked bluntly. ‘A male part extension?’ Jackson asked raising an eyebrow, his lip twerking in amusement. ‘Yes, you are so under endowed you have to drive around in that grossly overpriced red thing to make yourself feel more manly’ Skylar growled back, glaring out of the window. Jackson chuckled to himself, ‘you are a lot of fun Omega, I think we are going to be friends’ he muttered as Skylar turned to stare at him incredulously. ‘You want to be my friend? Did you hit your head this morning? You don’t even know my name!’ she spat angrily. ‘Then tell me what it is’ Jackson replied leaning back against the chair and grinning over at her. ‘come on, tell me, don’t make me use my Alpha voice’ he cajoled when she didn’t reply. ‘Skylar’ the she wolf replied through gritted teeth. Holding out his hand, Jackson’s eyes sparkled, ‘well it is very nice to meet you Skylar, I am Jackson’ he replied with a winked. Rolling her eyes, Skylar took his outstretched palm and gave it a quick shake, ‘I already know that you i***t, you are the Alpha’s son, who doesn’t know who you are’ she grumbled in annoyance. The Alpha laughed again, ‘true, but it’s not as much fun as you think it is being the most popular kid in school’ he replied, a slight shadow falling over his face. ‘I’m sure it’s better than being the school punching bag’ Skylar countered bitterly. Nodding slightly, Jackson let out a sigh, ‘yeah, it must suck to be an Omega at school, at least at home we treat you respectfully, but school is full of jerks’ he muttered. ‘You can say that again’ Skylar mumbled causing the Alpha to give her a sideways grin. ‘So, friends?’ he asked as the large grey building of the school came into view. Hesitating slightly, Skylar nodded, ‘OK friends, but I totally get that you have to ignore me at school, so don’t feel bad about that’ she added hurriedly. Jackson shook his head, ‘nope, we are friends and as such I will treat you as one no matter where we are, if people don’t like it . . well . . I'm the future Alpha, what are they going to do about it?’ he asked as Skylar laughed despite herself. ‘OK Mr big head, you watch yourself or you won’t fit through that door to get off’ she advised as the bus pulled to a stop outside of the school. Following everyone dawn the steps, a loud voice shouted out over the din from the students. ‘Jack! What the heck man? Did the car break down? You should have called, I'd have picked you up!’ Pushing through the crowd, a tall blonde haired warrior made his way over to Jackson and Skylar, coming to a stop in front of them. ‘Hey Tay’ Jackson greeted the newcomer easily, ‘car is fine, I just felt like a change of scenery today’ he added as the teenager stared at him. ‘Oh, Tay, this is Skylar, we met on the bus’ Jackson introduced as the warrior swivelled to look at her, his shock evident. ‘Skylar, this is Taylor, my best mate and future Beta.’ ‘I know who he is’ Skylar muttered, staring down at her feet in embarrassment before quickly adding, ‘I have to go to class, see you’ and starting to walk away. ‘Bye Skylar!’ Jackson shouted over the students, the she wolf cringing as she gave an awkward wave and hurried inside the building. Spinning around to his friend, Taylor gawked at the Alpha, ‘umm, want to explain why you are talking to an Omega Jack?’ he asked pointedly. Jackson shrugged, ‘she’s nice, I like her and I want to get to know her’ he replied as he began to walk toward the school. ‘You want to get to know an Omega . . ‘Taylor muttered as he fell into step beside the Alpha. ‘Yes Tay, I want to get to know an Omega, there is something about her, a pull . . ‘ he mumbled the last part to himself. ‘Wait! The mate pull?’ Taylor asked suddenly, shock written across his face. ‘I don’t know, but something, and . . she doesn’t fawn all over me like all the other she wolves, she called me a wall of Idiocy’ he chuckled as Taylor just shook his head uncomprehendingly. ‘OK mate, whatever’ the warrior replied wearily.
