Laying her head back against a tree, Skylar stared brokenly ahead trying to ignore the throbbing pain throughout out her body. The sound of a breaking twig snapped her head to the side, causing her to whimper in pain as her body protested the sharp movement.
Footsteps came toward her, hesitantly at first, stopping just out of sight.
‘Who’s there’ Skylar demanded, trying to keep the fear out of her voice that her attackers had followed her.
She watched diligently until a soft sigh floated toward her and a slim figure stepped out of the trees.
Gasping, Skylar stared in shock as Harper made her way toward her, dropping to her knees in front of her, the Alpha’s daughter’s face a mix of emotions.
‘Who did this?’ she asked finally.
‘I don’t know, they covered my face’ Skylar replied guardedly, ‘how did you find me?’ she asked suddenly, trying to slow her speeding pulse.
Harper looked away shrugging, ‘I was in lesson and . . I don’t know how to explain it, I felt like I needed to leave, a pull, that led me here.’
the Omega swallowed at her words, suddenly shy in front of this high ranking pack member.
Reaching out slowly, Harper brushed a lock of hair from Skylar’s face, her brow creasing in anger as she took in a large bruise that stood prominently on her temple near her hair line. ‘Did they say anything to you?’ she asked, her voice hardening.
Skylar struggled to remember, her head filled with the pain of the punches and kicks, ‘they told me to stay away from your brother’ she finally admitted, her whole body slumping in defeat. ‘They were right, I should’ she added bitterly.
‘What? Why?’ Harper asked, her eyes flashing as her emotions swirled just below the surface.
‘I knew something like this would happen’ Skylar burst out, ‘I told him that being his friend would bring me nothing but misery, this is the second time . . ‘ The Omega suddenly snapped her mouth shut realising she had said to much.
Harper’s eyes narrowed, ‘second time?’ she prodded, ‘you mean this has happened before?’ her anger was palpable, confusing Skylar, why was she so mad that an Omega got hurt?
‘Skylar! Tell me what happened’ Harper demanded, holding the young girl’s gaze until she looked away, bowing in submission.
‘The Beta struck me after seeing me come down from the fourth floor’ she admitted quietly.
The other teenager looked at her quizzically, ‘what were you doing on the fourth floor?’ she asked.
‘I was with Jackson’ Skylar replied softly, looking up in surprise as she felt Harper stiffen at her words.
‘You were with Jackson?’ she repeated, a hint of pain in her voice that confused the Omega further.
‘Yes, we were practising our Shakespeare speech, he invited me’ Skylar replied, her own tone taking on a defensive sound, feeling like Jackson’s sister was also accusing her of going up there without permission.
Harper’s tense shoulders relaxed again, a smile pulling at her lips, ‘so why did the Beta strike you?’ she asked, ‘you had permission to visit the fourth floor.’
Skylar shrugged, wincing at the movement, Harper reaching out instinctively toward her, taking her by surprise, ‘he didn’t believe me’ the Omega replied sullenly.
A growl rose in Harper’s throat, drawing Skylar’s eyes to her in surprise, the Omega’s breath catching as she met those stunning Oceanic blue eyes that had haunted her dreams the night before.
Skylar was unable to look away, she felt like she was drowning in the deep pools, something inside her was pulling her toward the young girl in front of her. Confused and scared, the Omega tore her eyes from the girl across from her, hearing a sad sigh leave Harper’s lips that for some reason made her heart hurt.
‘Come on, I'll take you back to the pack house’ Harper said softly, moving around to Skylar’s side and pulling her arm carefully over her shoulders.
Lifting the Omega to her feet with ease, Harper started to walk slowly, careful not to jar the injured she wolf, her grip tightening slightly every time Skylar winced.
‘Why are you helping me?’ Skylar finally asked as they emerged from the trees.
Harper hesitated for a moment, keeping her eyes averted, ‘you are my brother’s friend’ she finally replied, ‘so that makes you my friend too’ she added.
‘We are friends?’ the Omega asked, for some reason unhappy with the label.
‘Yes, anyone who is important to my brother is important to me’ Harper replied, ‘now lean against the car while I open the door.’
Looking up, Skylar realised that they were stood beside a sporty powder blue convertible, seeing the Omega’s astonished look, Harper smiled, ‘my dad’ she explained, ‘Jackson wanted a car so I also had to have a car despite not being that bothered, he insists that we are treated equally even if Jackson is next in line to be Alpha.’
Skylar nodded as she rested against the back panel, ‘that is how it should be, you are not less important just because you were born afterwards.’
Harper’s smile lit up her face, warming the young she wolf’s heart, ‘that is possibly the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me’ the teenager replied, opening the door and helping Skylar into the seat, ‘I can see why my brother likes you’ she added with a shy smile that sent tingles through the Omega’s body.
Shutting the door, Harper walked around the front of the car, her hips swaying slightly as she moved, Skylar’s eyes drawn to the hypnotic movement before she shook her head and forced herself to look away toward the school, immediately regretting it as the assault in the bathroom flooded back to her causing her to shudder.
A soft hand on her arm drew her back from her thoughts, turning her eyes immediately connected with Harper’s, the other teenager looking at he with sad concern, ‘you are safe Skylar’ she said quietly.
Nodding silently, the she wolf settled back into the soft leather of the seat and pulled her seatbelt over her body, gritting her teeth as her body screamed in protest.
Harper took the seatbelt from her hand and pulled it across, holding it away from the Omega’s body to make sure she didn’t graze the harsh fabric against her bruises. Clicking it into the housing, the young girl, lay it softly against Skylar’s skin, holding her hand against the teenagers skin for a moment longer than necessary before moving it to the steering wheel and starting the engine.
Pulling out of the parking space, Harper slowly made her way out of the parking lot and onto the main road, keeping her speed low so as not to jolt the injured she wolf beside her.
‘Thank you’ Skylar mumbled finally, her cheeks flushed.
‘What for?’ Harper asked, sending her a smile that warmed the Omega from the inside.
‘For helping me, you didn’t have to’ Skylar replied, flushing slightly.
‘Yes I did’ the she wolf replied, her face closed off as she concentrated on the road. Allowing the conversation to lapse, the Omega sat in silence her confusion growing with regards to the pretty girl beside her.
