Jasmine
We finally arrived at Cody’s Grandma’s, and I could get out of the car quick enough. That was too much, Cody at the one time for me. My parents were already there, which isn’t a surprise. We arrived over an hour later than scheduled.
“Could you have gotten out any quicker?” Cody asked.
“No,” I laughed, “We can get the things in a bit. We should go in and say hi first,” I added.
Cody nodded, and we headed inside, looking for everyone. We found them outside.
“Jassy, Cody,” Lily said, excited, rushing over to hug us.
“Hey, Angel,” Cody smiled, ruffling her hair.
“What took so long? You should have been here an hour ago,” Mum laughed.
“Blame Jasmine,” Cody said.
“No, don’t blame me, blame us,” I said, “We stopped for coffee, and Cody’s bladder is worse than a child’s,” I added, rolling my eyes.
Cody shrugged it off and went to see his Grandma, hugging her tightly y, and she hugged him back. He was always so sweet to her.
“I have missed you, my boy,” His Grandma hushed.
“I missed you too, Grandma,” He said, “How are you doing?” He added.
“I am fine. Your mother is fussing over nothing,” She laughed.
I let her and Cody catch up, and then she motioned me over.
“Oh my, look at you, sweetie, you are just gorgeous,” She cooed at me,” I have missed you too. It has been too long,” She added.
“Thank you, and yes, I missed you. It has been way too long,” I smiled, hugging her.
I have missed my summers here; they were always the best. Everyone used to get excited about going to other countries for vacation but coming here was more exciting for Cody and me.
“And what about you two? Have you sorted things out yet?” She asked, looking between us.
“Grandma, people change. Things change,” Cody said.
She sighed and shook her head.
“Yes, I know, but what you two had shouldn’t have changed,” She said, “The bond, the relationship you two had was something special, and something like that doesn’t just end,” She added.
I don’t think she knows just how much things changed between Cody and me. Yes, she knew some, but not it all.
“Grandma, people, grow up and grow apart,” Cody said.
“You two may have given up on each other, but I haven’t given up on either of you,” She said, “I still believe you two are supposed to be together and more than friends,” She added.
I swear our families have been planning our wedding for years. It was not like that with Cody and me, even when we were best friends. We were only friends. Yes, we were each other’s first kiss, but that was due to curiosity more than anything. Everyone else was doing, and we thought we would try it since neither of us had our first kiss.
“Grandma, there is nothing ever going to happen between us,” Cody said, laughing.
“Yes, what he said,” I agreed.
“You two keep telling yourself that,” She laughed.
We shook our heads laughing. Cody went to say hello to his mum, and then we headed out to get the things from the car, my dad helping. I had a feeling our time here was going to much the same as today. We got the stuff from the car, heading back inside.
“The two of you have the rooms at the top of the landing, the ones next to each other, the ones you always used to stay in,” Grandma said.
There were our rooms, but half the time, we would end up in the same room. Cody would always bring his duvet to my room and sleep on the floor because he didn’t want me to be alone. That is the kind of boy he used to me. Now, if he were to sneak into my room, it would be for various reasons, I am sure.
I grabbed my things, and Cody grabbed his things, and we headed upstairs, heading into separate rooms. I put my things away and lay down on the bed. I needed a breather. I closed my eyes over to rest them, but my rest was interrupted when I feel the space next to me, dip down. I looked over and found Cody laying down next to me.
“Can I help you?” I asked, “We aren’t ten anymore. You can’t sneak into my room and think I am going to be OK with it,” I added.
“I am not doing anything,” He said, “I wanted to see if we were still on for tomorrow? And if you want to go down today and check if the swing is still there before we tell Lily,” He added.
“Yeah, we could do that, but I need to get showered and changed first,” I said.
“OK, I will get you downstairs,” He said.
He got up and left the room after that. I couldn’t be assed moving, but I had too. I grabbed towels and clean clothes and went to the bathroom for a quick shower.
I headed back down once I was done, finding everyone was still outside. I smiled when I saw Cody chasing Lily around, Lilly squealing and giggling the whole time as she tried running away from him. I chuckled as I watched them. I went and sat down, leaving them too.
“Cody said you two were going down to the lake?” Mum asked.
“Yes, we want to see if the swing is still there, and then we can take Lily down tomorrow,” I smiled.
“I am sure she will love that,” mum smiled, “I think this weekend will be good for you both because it is away from everything and everyone,” She added.
“Maybe,” I shrugged.
I didn’t want to get into all of this again. I need everyone just to stop. Cody and I will not ever get back to how we were, and everyone going on about it isn’t going to change that. I excused myself, going into the kitchen to get some water.
I am sort of hoping that Cody has changed his mind. I suddenly wasn’t in the mood to go anywhere or be in the company of Cody. I decided since he was pre-occupied, I can sneak out without him.
I grabbed my phone and some water before heading out. I think some me-time would be good for me. I knew this place anyway so I wouldn’t get lost, and the lake was not far away from here either. I feel my phone in my pocket and pull it out, seeing it was Cody.
Where did you go? I thought we were going to the lake.
I was going to text back but then changed my mind. If he wants me, he can come and find me. If he puts it all together, I am sure he can work out where I am. He will get on at me for going without him, but I don’t care.
I put my earphones in, putting my music on and enjoy the quiet as I walked. Yes, this is good. This is just what I need.
