He is her mate? This man, werewolf, whatever he is, is her mate. She has a soulmate, werewolves are real and one of them is fated to be with her.
"Are you okay?" Dean asked, looking at her concernedly.
"Um, honestly I have no idea. I feel like I'm so much more okay with this than I should be and I don't know why that is." She turned to look at him fully, "shouldn't I be freaking out more?"
"You are handling this a lot better than I expected. I'm curious if it has anything to do with the mate bond."
"There's a bond involved in this mate thing?"
"Yes, mates are connected on a very deep level. Mates can feel when the other is near, sparks will erupt when they touch each other, they can feel when their other half is in pain, and most will mate and mark each other right after meeting, which solidifies the bond even further."
"I know I said I couldn't handle asking anymore questions, but now I feel like I can't handle not asking questions."
Dean laughed, "please ask away then."
"You said mates feel sparks when they touch each other?"
"Yes?"
"Is that why it feels like a static shock when you touch me?"
"You feel something when I touch you?" He asked her, sounding excited about the possibility.
"Yes, when you had a hold of my wrist I felt it and when I was petting your wolf. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it I think I also felt it when you held my face in your hands when I was freaking out."
"That's interesting."
"Do you think I'll feel other aspects of the mate bond as well?"
"I think you already might be."
"What do you mean by that?"
"You know how I said mates can feel when one is near, that they can also feel each other's pain?"
"Yes, you just said that like a minute ago." Dean raised his eyebrow at her, she assumed because of her sarcasm. "Sorry," she quickly added, "I didn't mean to be rude, I was just joking around. Go on."
"No it's okay, I don't ever want you to feel like you have to police yourself around me." He told her, offering her a small smile. "To continue what I was saying, mates can also draw strength from one another. I think that perhaps you are drawing on my strength to help you handle this. Once you calmed down and connected with Xander I think that feeling deepened."
"Oh wow, okay. Well this is a lot to handle. Not only are werewolves real but one of them is my soulmate. Is it possible to get a ride back to town?" He gave her a look that made her think she wasn't going to like his answer. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"I'm sorry but no. You can't go back."
"Excuse me? Did you just tell me I can't go back to my home?"
"Yes, I did. It's for your own safety, I have no idea how those rogues knew about you." At the confusion clear on her face he explained "wolves belong in a pack. When they don't have one, either because they were banished or their pack was defeated in battle, or they were simply born to wolves with no pack they are rogues. And many rogues are dangerous, they're almost like human mercenaries. They are for sale to the highest bidder and other packs will use them to do their dirty work."
"Well how do you know those were rogues that attacked me and not just some random wolves?"
"Every wolfpack has a unique scent. Every wolf has their own scent as well but under their scent you can detect a pack scent too. Rogues don't have a pack scent. They all tend to smell like sulfur. It's fairly easy to identify them."
"Okay, but why would they want to hurt me?"
"My only guess is because they somehow found out you are my mate."
"Okay, but I can't just never go home. I have a life, a job, bills to pay."
"Sophia it's not just that. I'm 25, Xander and I have been waiting four years to find our mate. I'm not sure how to explain what a feat it is that he hasn't tried to mark you yet. That he actually walked away from you that first night. He can't be away from you, and neither can I. We would go crazy."
"Dean you can't just keep me here. Look I'm sorry that this is hard for you and I'm not saying we'll never see each other again. I just need to go home, I need to work, I need to process this, and I can't stay here indefinitely."
"You will end up here indefinitely. You do understand that right? I'm the Alpha. I can't leave my pack and, as my mate, you are the Luna."
"What the frick is a Luna?"
"Like the female Alpha."
"Okay, I definitely can't do that. I'm starting to freak out again. I really need to go. Please you have to understand."
"Why don't you get some sleep and we can talk more when you wake up?"
"I guess that couldn't hurt." She grumbled out, making her way inside and wondering how the hell she would escape from these people. She had done it before, and while it wasn't wolves she escaped from, she had no doubt she could do it again.
