Chapter 1
Dean woke up feeling irritable, as usual. He had been having a hard time feeling anything other than irritable since his chosen mate decided to sleep with one of his pack members throwing away the last year of their relationship. At 25, Dean's wolf Xander had begun to grow restless without his mate. Dean wasn't exactly happy about not having found her yet either, but it was harder for his wolf to control his emotions than it was for Dean. He had taken over as Alpha of the pack at 18 when his father was killed during a battle with the Blood Moon Pack. That meant he wasn't able to travel in search of his mate like other wolves. He supposed he could have his Beta Matthew and his Gamma Kate watch over the pack in his absence, but these travels usually took a year to complete, unless of course you found your mate before then. He couldn't risk being gone that long and he knew if he set off in search of his mate Xander wouldn't let him stop until they found her, no matter how long that took. Kate was one of the lucky ones who found her mate in the pack when she turned 21. Matthew was still looking for his mate. When Dean's father was killed and he took over as Alpha, Matthew's father also decided to step down and hand his title over. He helped them both transition into their positions, but he had lost his best friend and Alpha and wanted to spend more time with his mate, whom he almost lost as well. Matthew had also decided not to travel to neighboring and ally packs to find his mate, but he also had no interest in taking a chosen mate. If anything, he was kind of a playboy. He avoided sleeping with shewolves in their pack but he went out to the city whenever he had a chance to find a hook up. He was always worried that if he found his mate there would be tension between her and those in the pack he slept with, which is why he steered clear. Dean's girlfriend Claire had also not found her mate, but she surprisingly had no interest in doing so. After they met and started dating they had a conversation about being each other's chosen. Their ceremony had been scheduled for one week from the day that Dean caught her in bed with one of his warriors. He had come back early from a meeting with the Alpha of a neighboring pack to surprise her. Although he did have to admit, she was surprised to see him. He immediately banished her and the wolf she had been sleeping with. He was surprised Xander didn't appear and tear them to pieces, but he supposed that while having a chosen mate did settle Xander somewhat, he had never been a fan of that plan. He had always held out hope they would find their mate. Dean finally got the energy to get out of bed and head down to the main floor of the packhouse. He knew many Alpha's preferred to have their own homes outside of the pack house, but he liked to be around his pack. Plus, having his Beta and Gamma just a couple floors below him made emergency calls and meetings much easier to handle. The top floor of the packhouse was home to the Alpha suites intended for the whole Alpha family. The second floor was split into suites for the Beta and Gamma families, and the first floor was for visiting pack members. The main floor of the pack house was open to everyone in the pack. There was a huge dining hall; a game room with darts, pool, and foosball; a movie room; and a parlor-type room for members to hang out in a more quiet, serene place. Outside of the pack house there was a daycare center, a school, community gardens and the home of other pack members. The humans in the neighboring towns and cities thought they lived on a commune, so they mostly left them alone. That and the rumor of giant wolves roaming these woods kept most humans away. The other pack members lived in homes surrounding the pack house and stretching out for miles in either direction. The land they lived on was huge. It was a ten-minute drive from one end to the other so those that liked to keep to themselves more had plenty of space. As Dean entered the dining hall, Matthew stood up and waved him over. "What do you have going on tonight?" "Nothing, as you very well know." "Yeah, yeah, I figured. Go out with me tonight." "No thanks, I'll pass." "Dude come on, you've been moping around ever since you caught Claire with Jacob." "And what would you do if you found your mate f*****g some other guy huh?" "First of all, she was your chosen mate not your mate mate. Second of all, I honestly think she did you a favor. She was kind of a raging b***h. Making her Luna would have been a disaster." "Yeah you've mentioned that before she was still the woman Xander and I chose and she f****d us over." "Well you can't just be an irritable bastard for the rest of your life." "Watch me." "Ugh fine okay, be miserable. Just come out with me tonight. Kate already said she will be here and I'll tighten up patrols around the borders before we go." "If it will get you to stop talking to me so I can get some coffee then yes I will go out with you tonight." "Awesome, we'll leave at ten." "Great, see ya then." Dean got his breakfast and then went up to his office where he worked for the rest of the day. He was in charge of overseeing not only pack business but also the enterprises that they ran that supported the pack monetarily. He was so busy he only took a break to get in a quick workout and before he knew it, it was nine o'clock. He decided to go shower and get ready for a night out with Matthew. It took them about 45 minutes to get to the new bar Matthew wanted to take him to. "Isn't this place awesome?" Matt asked when they got out of the car. Dean had to admit the inside was nothing like he was picturing. It was dark with lights flashing overhead and and VIP tables circling the dance floor. It looked like there was a VIP section upstairs as well and multiple bars scattered throughout the ground floor. He was about to agree with him when the most heavenly scent reached his nose. "Well?" Matthew asked and then froze when he saw Dean's eyes flitting back and forth from gold to brown. "What is it what's wrong?" He asked suddenly on full alert. "Mate." Dean whispered.
