Dean had never wanted to fight his beta before, not seriously anyway. But when he put his hands on him to pull him away from his mate Xander almost surfaced completely. Until Matthew whispered that his mate was human and he needed to calm down that is. As soon as he saw the woman he got tunnel vision. He hadn't even realized she was a human until Matthew pointed it out. That calmed Xander down just a bit. Human mates had to be treated differently than when your mate was a wolf. For starters, humans weren't aware of their existence, the only humans that were, were the ones that had mates themselves. And the mating ritual with a human had to be done much more carefully.
It wasn't uncommon for mates to mark each other as soon as they found one another. But humans were much more fragile than wolves. Marking a human incorrectly could lead to incredible pain, injury, and even death. While a human mate dying was rare, it was possible, like when a wolf didn't realize their mate was human in their haze of finding them and marked them immediately. Generally though, their wolves were aware enough to identify the species of their mate and proceed accordingly. Dean owed Matthew a great debt for making sure that he and Xander realized what their mate was before he tried to mark her.
Matthew made sure to follow Dean out of the bar. "Congratulations Man!" He said while slapping him on the back.
"For what?" Dean growled out. "For scaring the s**t out of my mate? For almost pulling her outside to mark her? s**t, I don't know what would have happened if you weren't here."
"I know, but I was so don't sweat it man."
"You were this time. What if I run into her again and I'm alone?"
"Seriously Dean, you and Xander have waited years to find your mate. Now that you won't be shocked to see her, and you know she is a human, Xander won't hurt her. He won't do something to jeopardize her safety and you know it."
"I hope you're right."
"I know I am. Now let's go get some food then we can come back and chill in the parking lot." Dean raised an eyebrow at Matt, "oh come on. I know you, and we both know the mate bond. There's no way you're going to leave until you're sure she leaves and gets home safely."
"Fine, come on let's go get something to eat." They ran to a fast food place that was just around the corner from the bar and came back to wait for his mate to leave. They were waiting for a few hours before she came out of the bar. She started walking to her car before pausing and looking around the parking lot. It was almost like she could sense them watching her. As soon as she got in the car Matt started theirs and began to follow her. They made sure to follow at a distance with their lights off. They could see better at night than humans and didn't actually need the lights anyway. They only used them to make sure that other humans on the road could see them but they were vigilant enough to keep themselves and other cars safe.
They followed her about twenty minutes outside of the city, to an apartment in York. Dean was familiar with this town. They drove through it on their way to the city and since it was only about 25 minutes from their territory, they made sure to keep an eye on what was happening in the town. They continued to follow her to a small building that had been converted into apartments. Dean growled as he saw her get out and go in.
"What's wrong?" Matt asked.
"These apartments are shitty. There isn't even a light outside. Does she know how dangerous that could be?"
"I mean, I don't think she has anything to do with the outside lights if she's a renter. And come on, they're not that bad."
"You're joking right?" Dean asked him.
"I guess if you say they're bad, they're bad. So what do you want to do now?"
"Let's head back to the pack house. Can you assign a warrior to watch over her? Don't inform him who she is exactly yet, I want a chance to tell the pack on my own time."
"Will do. When will you try to see her again?"
"Xander is already going crazy begging me to go inside and see how she settled in, so probably tomorrow."
"At the bar, or will you run into her somewhere else?"
"I'm thinking somewhere in York maybe. Have whomever you put on her report her comings and goings to you. I'll try to find a way to get to where she is organically."
"Good plan boss man."
Dean growled at him, he detested being called boss man. They made the rest of the car ride to the pack house in silence. Dean consumed with thoughts of his mate and Matt giving him time to process that he had finally found her. Dean groaned when they got to the pack house and saw Lilly, the daughter of one of his retired warriors who was relentlessly trying to get him to pick her as his chosen mate. Especially since he had banished Claire. She ran to them as soon as they parked and Dean got out.
"You guys are out late tonight!" She exclaimed.
"That's what happens when you go to a bar," Matt informed her.
"Well you should have taken me, I'm a lot of fun at bars" she said with a wink as she glided her hand up Dean's arm. Xander immediately rose to the surface. He wouldn't tolerate another female touching him now that he had found his mate.
"Remove your hand" he told her and she immediately pulled back shocked that Xander had demanded she not touch him.
"I'm sorry" she said looking wildly around like someone would have seen the exchange. "I'll just head back to my place now, goodnight Alpha."
Dean ignored the look Matt gave him and stormed inside to his room. He didn't know how he was going to take things slowly with his mate. Only that he had to, so he didn't scare her away. He fell asleep thinking of her, and coming up with a plan for telling her who he was, and that she was now his luna.
