Chapter eleven

Princess Ivie Pov: We just arrived at the Chief of Egbesama's building. I must say, his building is almost like my father's palace. Chief of Egbesama has good taste, his little palace is beautiful and there are so many maids and servants. His guards are more than the ones we have back at the palace. Why does he want so much guards, I wondered. The wedding ceremony was a success as I did all that was asked of me and the rituals performed in given my husband the title of the Prince of Benin was also carried out, all through the ceremony my husband never glanced at me not even once. It seemed like I was weddingbening wedded to a robot. I understand this was an arranged marriage but I also didn't find it easy in marrying someone I barely even knew. I'm ready to give my marriage a try even if we we're married out of diplomacy and not love. "We are here" Igie alerted me. Wow! That's the first time he has said anything to me. Our journey was a quiet one. We were both lost in our thoughts. "I will take my leave now" I heard him say from behind me "What! Where are you going?" I asked "I have some work to do, don't worry about me. Go to bed. We will see tomorrow and if you need anything just let my personal servant, Osa know." He pointed to a huge young man standing at the entrance of the house. To say I was shocked was an understatement. This is unbelievable! I just nodded my head in understanding with a frown on my face because my voice had failed me. "Good!" He said as he walked out on me, going back towards the same direction we came through. This is not happening on the first night of our union. I was too shocked to move when I felt someone's hand touch my shoulder and I flinched. I saw Rose standing beside me with a worried look. You heard that? I asked Rose I did my Princess, she bowed her head. "I am not going to cry for that bastard" I thought to myself. If he wants his space then I will have to find other relevant things to keep me busy. I might not know anyone from Egbesama but I came with some close workers from the palace and I remember father telling me to be strong no matter what and keep the maids he gave me closer. Thinking about my father almost brings tears to my eyes but I try to make sure no tear drops. "Bring in our things" I ordered Rose as she in turn gave the order to the others. Osa took us to our quarters which was a bit isolated from the main building and then left us. "It seems like we are not welcomed here" Rose said the obvious and I just smiled back. My bags were carried in by some of our guards and I gave an order to one of the guards to gather the others in my room. They all stood facing me as I sat on my bed. "I understand all of you are here as ordered by the king but I don't want any of you to think solely of your duties to the throne but I will want all of us to look out for each other." I could see the confusion on their faces so I explained further. "I don't know anyone from this land but I know the ones I came with. I know some persons in this household will be coming for my head soon and that's why I will want us to work as family." "Rose from now henceforth, you will be in charge of my food and always make sure someone always tastes what I will eat and drink." I said "Yes my Princess." She replied "Nosa" I called the name of one of the guards and he bowed his head. "Henceforth, you are my personal guard. You will go with me everywhere I go." He also replied, "yes, my Princess." I further designated duties to the others and they all left my room when I was done except for Rose who stayed to help me remove my transitional marriage atire. "Do you think he will be okay?" I asked Rose. "The king will be fine" she replied with a worried smile. "Rose, something tells me our path here is going to be rough and we need to be strong. To do that, we need to know our enemies. From now on always report my husband's where about to me and plant one of our maidens inside the kitchen as gossip always starts from the kitchen." "As for Chief of Egbesama, I will need to do something about him. I remember my father words - 'Always watch out for that snake and never let him know your weaknesses'. I was relieved of the heavy beads on my head so I sent Rose to prepare my bath water. So she left my room to attend to it. This is now my life. I can only make things worse or make it work! And I Princess Ivie, daughter of the great lion of Bini kingdom refuse to take a bow!
