Chapter 6: Dating Is Supposed To be Fun (3) *** “Yes, we’ll go do that!” The father said as he headed out of the kitchen with his daughter and pulled her aside so that the others wouldn’t hear. “Listen Evelyn… You know I don’t approve of lying, right?” He asked with a very serious look in his eyes. “Of course, dad...” Evelyn nodded her head. Her father had drilled into both her and her brother that lying was not allowed no matter what. Sometimes the truth was painful yet it had to be said. Of course that didn’t mean being painfully honest all the time but it did mean not purposefully deceiving anyone if you could help it. “I don’t approve it for anything else… besides your mother and brother’s cooking… So please pretend to like it…” The father said with a pleading expression on his face. He was begging his daughter not to tell the truth about the burned vegetable remains they were going to have for dinner with the side of bread and water. “I’ll try dad but…” Evelyn tried to say something but was interrupted. “I know soldier… It’s going to be a rough battle but we must get though it together…” The father said with a deep and low voice as if he was discussing top secret military strategies with his daughter. “Dad… we’re eating dinner, not going to war…” Evelyn said as she rolled her eyes. “You’re always being so dramatic…” She remarked, sure the food was crap but it only happened every once in a while and they were mostly used to it already. “You’re right… this is more like building resistance to poison… Slowly with time…” The man said as he looked up with a determined look in his eyes, he was ready to face that dinner and eat it, no matter how bad it tasted. ‘Geez dad…’ Evelyn didn’t know what else to do but to go to the table she’d already set and wait for the food to be served… What she didn’t expect was the food to go beyond her expectations… After it was set on the table, every person of the four member family had a place with vegetables, a side dish which was a surpassingly dark green color and a desert that looked like a relatively normal chocolate pudding. “You must have worked hard honey…” The husband said as he smiled at his wife. “It looks interesting.” He remarked with a warm voice. “Yes, this time I followed the recipe exactly! Cooked for thirty minutes on low heat, all the measurements should be fine and I even added my own twist at the end!” The wife said as she picked up her fork, everyone was but ready to eat. Evan was the first to start eating. After taking a bit he remarked. “Mom… I think we outdid ourselves this time… It’s far too good!” The boy said as he took yet another bite of the food. The mother did the same. “You’re right honey… I can’t even believe we did so well!” She said as if she was really proud of both of their efforts. ‘Both of them seem to be enjoying it… then maybe it’s actually good…’ The man thought to himself as he picked up some of the vegetables with his fork. ‘Don’t be fooled dad… both of them have strong stomachs…’ Evelyn thought to herself as she struggled to swallow the first bite she took. She drank nearly all of her glass of water after the bite. ‘It tastes like… if a car tire that’s been used for a few years was cut up into tiny pieces and covered in hot sauce…’ The man thought to himself as he continued eating. “It’s really good honey… you’re doing better as of late…” He said. “Really dear?!” The woman looked ecstatic at her husband’s praise, she was nearly going to fall off her chair. “I’ll definitely cook again!” She said. ‘I have to try even harder next time! I’m improving!’ The woman thought to herself. ‘Why are you encouraging her?!’ Evelyn thought to herself as she turned to look at her father. Her father had a love struck look on his face as he looked at his wife’s happy expression, he continued eating the awful food. ‘I guess… that’s why…’ She thought to herself, realizing that her father simply liked seeing her mother happy and thus praised her for her food even if it was awful. “It’s really good mom… bro… You both did very well.” Evelyn said with a smile on her face. Her brother also nodded his head in approval as he continued eating… “So tomorrow he’s going to come and pick you up from here, since he’s a gentleman… And just wait until you see the car he’s driving, it’s quite-” The woman was interrupted by her husband. “Honey, money isn’t everything.” The man said as he smiled. “…but he is pretty rich though, if you don’t want him I could give it a shot.” “Dad!” Evelyn yelled as it sounded embarrassing to hear something like that come from his father’s mouth. “Honey… the boy is rather handsome…” The mother said in approval. “Wait… you’re okay with that?” Evelyn felt like both her parents were playing an awful prank on her. “Relax sis… it’s not a big deal, he’s just rich and handsome, not like they’re expecting you to marry him or anything.” Evan said in a casual voice. “Right.” The mother agreed. “Honestly if his family wasn’t so insistent we wouldn’t have even suggested something like this…” She said. “Since he seemed like he knows you.” “He knows me?” Evelyn asked as she tilted her head to the side, now thinking the man she’s going to meet is a classmate of hers. “He mentioned going to the same camp, right?” The father asked as he turned to his wife. “It was something along those lines I believe…” “Camp… I don’t really remember anything.” Evelyn said as she rummaged through her old memories trying to connect the dots but nothing really came to mind. “It doesn’t matter now does it? Just go there tomorrow and have fun, have a nice dinner, chat a little bit, drink responsibly and come back to tell me a good story.” The mother said as she stood up and began putting away the dishes, her husband doing the same. “Sure, I’ll do that.” Evelyn said as she signaled to her brother to follow her. “I’ll go to bed early, alright?” “Good night to both of you.” The mother said. “Night-Night!” The father chimed in as well as he put the dishes at the sink… Going up to their room, Evelyn changed out of her brother’s shirt and put on a new one. Then asked. “What are we going to do if the guy asks you something about the camp?” “I’ll just tell him I don’t remember. It was probably a long time ago anyways.” Evan said casually as he took back his T-shirt. “Ugh… you sprayed that flowery perfume all over my shirt…” He remarked. “Evan… this is a real issue… If he knows me he might figure out you’re not me and-” Evelyn was interrupted. “And nothing… Just relax already, you’re always so on edge and anxious about every little thing…” Evan turned his back and headed to his own room. “It’s going to be fine, just leave it to me.” “I hope you’re right…” Evelyn said as the door closed. She couldn’t help but worry that something outside of her control might happen on the date...
